I Wanna Be Loved By You
Dreamer. Bombshell. Icon.
Featuring a wealth of unpublished material, Andrew Wilson’s biography of Marilyn Monroe presents the actress in a startling new light.
Born Norma Jeane Mortenson, she had an uncertain and unforgiving upbringing with a mentally ill mother, an absent father and cruel foster parents. She grew up in Los Angeles and would dream about Hollywood, believing that acting would be her one-way ticket to happiness. Her dream was so powerful that she transformed herself into the ultimate goddess of the silver screen, and her image has been branded into the collective consciousness. Men lusted after her, and women wanted to be her. All her life, she just wanted to be loved.
Told through 100 captivating snapshots, we are thrown into the glamorous but dangerous world of old Hollywood. We see a young Marilyn navigating the highs and lows of the studio system as she attempts to free herself from the constraints of Twentieth Century-Fox and forge her own path. We also go behind the scenes of her marriages to teenage sweetheart Jim Dougherty, baseball star Joe DiMaggio and famous playwright Arthur Miller. We hear the voices of friends, lovers – and enemies.
Marilyn Monroe was more than just a goddess of the screen. She was highly intelligent and well-read, and formed long-term friendships with poets, philosophers, playwrights and political activists, such as with the avant-garde poet Edith Sitwell. After training with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio, she worked hard to dismantle the common perception that she was nothing but a dumb blonde.
In the concluding chapters, Andrew Wilson unpicks what happened on the night Marilyn died after a suspected drug overdose – and investigates the rash of conspiracy theories that surround the star’s final moments. Were the Kennedys involved, or was she just let down by those closest to her?
I Wanna Be Loved By You is a revealing and nuanced portrait of the life, death and afterlife of an icon who still fascinates us today.
Čitateľ totiž pozná obsah týchto ľudových piesní a vie ich motív i ideu.
V dobe tzv. postmodernistickej, experimentovacej, aspoň čo do tvorby básní, veľmi dobre padne čítanie založené na základných ľudských hodnotách a slovenskom ľudovom folklóre.
Night Owls
* National Jewish Book Award Winner * Green Mountain Book Award Nominee * Sydney Taylor Book Award Winner * YALSA's 2026 Best Fiction for Young Adults *In this thrilling paranormal YA romance debut steeped in folklore, two estries—owl-shifting female vampires from Jewish tradition—face New York's monstrous underworld to save the girl one of them loves with help from the boy one of them fears before they are, all of them, lost forever. Clara loves rules. Rules are what have kept her and her sister, Molly, alive—or, rather, undead—for over a century. Work their historic movie theater by day. Shift into an owl under the cover of night. Feed on men in secret. And never fall in love. Molly is in love. And she’s tired of keeping her girlfriend, Anat, a secret. If Clara won’t agree to bend their rules a little, then she will bend them herself. Boaz is cursed. He can’t walk two city blocks without being cornered by something undead. At least at work at the theater, he gets to flirt with Clara, wishing she would like him back. When Anat vanishes and New York’s monstrous underworld emerges from the shadows, Clara suspects Boaz, their annoyingly cute box office attendant, might be behind it all. But if they are to find Anat, they will need to work together to face demons and the hungers they would sooner bury. Clara will have to break all her rules—of love, of life, and of death itself—before her rules break everyone she loves. In this stand-alone debut, A. R. Vishny interweaves mystery, romance, and lore to create an unputdownable story about those who have kept to the shadows for far too long. The Cancelled Prime Minister
A long overdue re-evaluation of the first Labour Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald?Ramsay MacDonald was born and brought up in the county of Moray in north-east Scotland, the illegitimate son of a ploughman. When he left school at the age of fourteen he seemed bound to follow in his father’s footsteps. Instead he would be Prime Minister of Great Britain, the first Labour Prime Minister, a friend of his sovereign, George V, a world star on the stage of international diplomacy. How did he get there from his Highland bothy and why is he now forgotten, blanked out of political memory? The Cancelled Prime Minister answers that question. It also exonerates this man of the left from the charge that he went on to lead the Conservative-dominated National Government for reasons of treacherous ambition. While MacDonald’s was a political life, it was also a personal and poignant odyssey, undertaken for half its span beneath the weight of undying grief over the loss of a wife who died young. Similarly, this biography is more than a political one. MacDonald’s was an elusive, Celtic personality and it has been easier to criticise him than to understand him. Making extensive use of MacDonald’s private diaries, Walter Reid reveals for the first time the full essence of a complex individual, a man not without faults, but able and honourable and with deep and widespread interests.History has been unkind to MacDonald. It has been written in general from political standpoints hostile to him. Reid’s book is not uncritical but it reveals the true importance of this hugely significant figure, whose detractors have sought to eliminate him from the record of his century.

Things in Nature Merely Grow
WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE FOR MEMOIR 2026 LONGLISTED FOR THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE FOR NON-FICTION 2025 ‘The best book I have read this year’ DAVID NICHOLLS ‘Masterly … I'm in awe’ SALMAN RUSHDIE ‘Beautiful’ DOUGLAS STUART ‘Extraordinary’ SARAH MOSS ‘A formidable testament to a mother’s love’ SARA COLLINS ‘There is no good way to say this,’ Yiyun Li writes at the beginning of this book. ‘There is no good way to state these facts, which must be acknowledged. My husband and I had two children and lost them both: Vincent in 2017, at sixteen, James in 2024, at nineteen. Both chose suicide, and both died not far from home.’ There is no good way to say this – because words fall short. In this remarkable, defiant work of radical acceptance, Li turns to thinking and searching for words that might hold a place for her son, James. Li does ‘the things that work’: including not just writing but gardening, reading Camus and Wittgenstein, learning the piano, and living thinkingly alongside death. Things in Nature Merely Grow is a testament to Li’s indomitable spirit. Hunting Shadows
Hunting Shadows is a gripping true crime memoir by Jane Hamilton, one of Scotland's most experienced and well-known crime journalists. The book chronicles her decades-long career reporting on some of the country's most harrowing and high-profile criminal cases - with a central focus on the chilling investigation into serial killer Peter Tobin. Following Tobin's arrest, she was one of the first journalists to question whether his crimes were more extensive than publicly known. Her reporting uncovered early warning signs and disturbing patterns that would later help prompt Operation Anagram - the nationwide police operation that sought to uncover the full extent of Tobin's crimes. She gained unprecedented access to Tobin's personal world through exclusive interviews with his estranged wife and son - interviews no other journalist secured. Their revelations offered a rare insight into Tobin's double life and helped reveal how a serial killer hid in plain sight. Hunting Shadows takes readers behind the scenes of major investigations, crime scenes, courtrooms, and newsrooms. It offers a rare inside look at the world of crime journalism, the pressures of reporting under scrutiny, and the responsibility of telling the stories of victims and survivors with truth and integrity.
