There Are Places in the World Where Rules Are Less Important Than Kindness
One of our most beloved scientists, a fearless free spirit, Carlo Rovelli is also a masterful storyteller. In this collection of writings, the logbook of an intelligence always on the move, he follows his curiosity and invites us on a voyage through science, literature, philosophy and politics. Written with his usual clarity and wit, these pieces, most of which were first published in Italian newspapers, range widely across time and space: from Newton's alchemy to Einstein's mistakes, from Nabokov's butterflies to Dante's cosmology, from travels in Africa to the consciousness of an octopus, from mind-altering psychedelic substances to the meaning of atheism.
Charming, pithy and elegant, this book is the perfect gateway to the universe of one of the most influential physicists of our age.

Plastic Inc
Plastic is everywhere in our daily lives. But the companies making it - oil and petrochemical giants like ExxonMobil and INEOS - are hiding in plain sight. Because for all the vivid coverage of where plastic ends up, there is remarkably little discussion of where it comes from. In a shocking investigative deep dive, packed with character-driven storytelling, award-winning journalist Beth Gardiner exposes the truth of the vast, rapacious industry flooding our world with plastic - and now preparing to make more than ever.
From the Gulf Coast of Texas to the narrow streets of Antwerp and the glitz and bling of Dubai, Gardiner gives us an up-close look at the plastic industry's relentless growth, its extraordinary profits, its toxic pollution, and its hidden role in exacerbating climate change. Today, the industry is pouring billions of dollars into plans to double, and eventually triple, the amount of plastic it churns out, even as so many of us -aghast at this material's out-of-control proliferation - try to use less. As Big Oil stares down a future of diminishing demand for fossil fuels, plastic has become its financial lifeline.
Plastic Inc is full of stunning revelations, including how Big Oil pushed plastic into our lives and then sold us myths about recycling to ease our worries; how companies funded litter campaigns to blame us for the waste they were creating; and how they've poured cash and political muscle into fighting bans on single-use plastics. Gardiner also uncovers the hidden health crisis caused by chemicals in the items we use every day, and scientists' growing fear that microplastics may pose even greater dangers.
Plastic Inc is an extraordinary exposé of an industry that will stop at nothing to feed its voracious hunger for profit.
The Impossible Thing
On a summer’s evening in 1926, six-year-old Celie Shepherd is hungry and desperate and not where a six-year-old should be. Instead she is dangling from a cliff, far above the sea, reaching out to pocket an impossibly beautiful thing. This bold theft will change the course of Celie’s life, and the lives of others.
One hundred years later, a house is ransacked. The only thing missing: a dusty case containing that same impossible thing. What could conceivably be so important that it is stolen again and again (and perhaps yet again . . .)?
So begins this extraordinary mystery from award-winning Belinda Bauer. A taut, wonderfully imagined novel brimming with skulduggery at every turn, The Impossible Thing is a blazing testament to Belinda Bauer’s status as one of our greatest living crime writers.

Cash Cow
A thought-provoking deep dive into the global fertility industry and the commodification of the maternal body.
Should surrogacy be a paid service, an altruistic act - or even legal at all? Is it right that you can pay more for 'VIP' egg donors - and to view their photos? How much, if anything, should breastmilk cost - and who should be allowed to buy it? The global fertility industry is rapidly growing, hugely profitable and morally complex. This an industry where one person's biological bad luck can be another person's financial gain. From egg freezing to black-market breastmilk, the maternal body has never been more commodified, yet the ethical, emotional and economic implications are rarely considered.
Through a combination of undercover reporting and detailed first-hand accounts - including a surrogate of 12 children, an international embryo courier and a man who buys breastmilk for his IBS - Alev Scott exposes how the IVF, surrogacy and milk industries operate around the world and who is profiting. In doing so, she considers the blurred line between exploitation and empowerment. Who should make money from the maternal body: only the women themselves, anyone or no one?
Timely, thought-provoking and compelling, Cash Cow is an unmissable investigation into how desire, desperation and commerce intersect, and the impact the fertility industry has on individuals.
Letizia Battaglia
The perfect primer on renowned Italian photographer Letizia Battaglia.
Born in Palermo, Letizia Battaglia (1935-2022) took up journalism as a single mother, but discovered that it was easier to sell articles if she could also supply photographs. She became a news photographer for L'Ora, a Sicilian daily newspaper that took a stand against the Mafia and its political and economic connections. Between 1976 and 1991, she was a witness to some of the bloodiest events in Italian history, including the killing of judges, police officers and politicians. While these images brought her international recognition, she strongly opposed the label of 'Mafia photographer' and believed that her aim was to seek out life. She built up a many-sided portrait of her Sicilian homeland, developing a special sensitivity to women, girls and young children, and a deep empathy with those living in poverty. Her work stands as proof that both joy and suffering are part of the experience of being in the world.

Fowler's Pottery: Excavation of a 19th Century Manufacturing Site in Mid Ulster
This monograph details the 2019 Centre for Community Archaeology excavation of Fowler’s Pottery, a nineteenth century pottery manufacturing site located in the townland of Derrybuoy, just outside Coalisland, Co. Tyrone. The site produced coarse earthenware pottery, a type which has received little academic attention to date, and this publication will therefore be of great use in advancing our limited knowledge of the coarse, utilitarian pottery used every day in nineteenth century households. Four distinct vessel forms were produced in four possible decorative styles, showing a specialised range of production which appears to have primarily targeted the rural market. Several key features of the pottery were also identified and are described at length, including the kiln, drying room and clay extraction pit, as well as large quantities of brick and kiln furniture. The narrative is greatly supplemented by historical records including personal letters, census returns and local testimony which offer a high-resolution view of precisely how and when the pottery operated. While other Post-Medieval pottery production sites have been excavated in Ireland previously, this is the second example of a nineteenth century kiln producing coarse earthenware pottery to be excavated, and the first to receive publication, meaning that this site is of critical importance to advancing our knowledge of local economy and manufacturing in the period.
