Beatrix Potter
Learn about inspiring story of Beatrix Potter, the legendary author, illustrator and protector of nature.
During her childhood in London, little Beatrix loved to draw. She drew everything she came across, and particularly loved drawing animals and other things that she spotted in the natural world around her.
As an adult, she began writing and drawing her own stories, and she created a story about a naughty little rabbit named Peter. That story, which she decided to publish with her own money, became The Tale of Peter Rabbit, which today is a true classic.
She went on to create other beloved animal characters, such as Jemima Puddle-Duck and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, enchanting readers with her timeless tales set in the English countryside. Her beautifully illustrated stories, filled with mischief and adventure, inspire readers with a love of nature and storytelling. Beyond her writing, Beatrix was a pioneering conservationist, preserving much of the Lake District for future generations.
Her story, of self-belief and perseverance, is a reminder that we should always follow our dreams, and that everyone has a story to tell.
This powerful book features quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the author's life.

But this time, something breaks. Aimée lets someone in – and the game turns personal.Jean-Patrick Manchette transformed the crime novel into a weapon of satire and stylish mayhem. Fatale is his bloodiest, funniest, and most brilliantly unhinged work: a riot of revenge, farce, and gleeful destruction.PRAISE FOR JEAN-PARICK MANCHETTE‘Manchette was was Le Homme... Lucian Freud
"One of the best books ever written by one painter about another." ? John Russell, The New York Times
First published in 1982, Lawrence Gowing's Lucian Freud is an intimate portrayal of one of the twentieth century's most exceptional artists. At once a pivotal narrative, a furtive autobiography, and a profound exploration of what it means to think through paint, this book represents a historically significant collaboration between two of modern art's brightest minds.
Drawing on forty years of friendship?as well as his own painterly intuition?Gowing's commentary pushes language to the very edge of meaning, evoking the richness of Freud's art with poetic incisiveness as he locates, within the paint itself, "a coiled vigilance and . . . a serpentine litheness in the ready, rapid way in which an object was confronted."
Freud's deep involvement in the original book offers rare insight into the artist as he was in the 1980s. The conversations and questions that shape Gowing's text produced some of Freud's most memorable and widely quoted reflections, while Freud's choice and grouping of paintings and drawings reveal unexpected connections across his works, as seen through his eyes.
Completely redesigned and reissued after many years out of print, this book remains a landmark publication on Lucian Freud.

V druhé sbírce je to pak Zátoka smrti, mocný obraz přírodního zákoutí, v němž řeka strhává do svého neodolatelného víru vše živé. Obě prózy, v nichž vrcholí Šlejharův svébytný symbolismus, spolu s ostatními povídkami podávají obraz neblahého údělu člověka.
Shift
Whether it's anxiety about the dentist, boiling rage when we're stuck in traffic or devastation after a painful break-up, our lives are filled with situations that send us spiralling. But as difficult as our emotions can be, they are also a superpower. When they're activated in the right ways and at the right time, they function like an immune system, alerting us to our surroundings, telling us how to react to a situation and helping us make the right choices.
But how do we make our emotions work for us rather than against us? Acclaimed psychologist Dr Ethan Kross has devoted his scientific career to answering this question. In Shift, he dispels common myths - for instance, that avoidance is toxic or that we should always strive to live in the moment - and provides a new framework for shifting our emotions so they don't take over our lives.
Shift weaves groundbreaking research with riveting stories of people struggling and succeeding to manage their emotions - from a mother whose fear prompted her to make a spur-of-the-moment decision that would save her daughter's life mid-flight to a nuclear code-carrying Navy SEAL who learned how to embrace both joy and pain during a hellish training activity. Dr Kross shows us that we already have access to a wide array of tools and demonstrates how to harness them to be healthier and more successful.
Filled with actionable advice, cutting-edge research and inspiring stories, Shift puts the power back into our hands, so we can control our emotions without them controlling us - and help others do the same.
Love in Exile
Shon Faye grew up quietly obsessed with the feeling that love was not for her. Not just romantic love: the secret fear of her own unworthiness penetrated every aspect and corner of her life. It was a fear that would erupt in destructive, counterfeit versions of the real love she craved: addictions and short-lived romances that were either euphoric and fantastical, or excruciatingly painful and unhinged, often both. Faye's experience of the world as a trans woman, who grew up visibly queer, exacerbated her fears. But, as she confronted her damaging ideas about love and lovelessness, she came to realize that this sense of exclusion is symptomatic of a much larger problem in our culture.
Love, she argues, is as much a collective question as a personal one. Yet our collective ideals of love have developed in a society which is itself profoundly sick and loveless; in which consumer capitalism sells us ever new, engrossing fantasies of becoming more loved or lovable. In this highly politicized terrain, boundaries are purposefully drawn to keep some in and to keep others out. Those who exist outside them are ignored, denigrated, exiled.
In Love in Exile, Shon Faye shows love is much greater than the narrow ideals we have been taught to crave so desperately that we are willing to bend and break ourselves to fit them. Wise, funny, unsparing, and suffused with a radical clarity, this is a book of and for our times: for seeing and knowing love, in whatever form it takes, is the meaning of life itself.
