Román je specifickým převyprávěním slavného příběhu Marka Twaina – Dobrodružství Huckleberryho Fina. Hlavním hrdinou je však černošský otrok jménem Jim a spolu s ním chlapec Huckleberry. Tito dva hrdinové se spolu shodou okolností ocitají na útěku. Jim utíká z farmy, kde pracuje, protože zaslechl, že má být prodán. Má na farmě manželku a dceru a nechce být od nich odveden. Utíká a věří, že se pro ně jednou vrátí. Huck zase utíká od tyranského otce, který ho bije. Narafičí prasečí krev, aby to vypadalo, že ho někdo zabil. Ovšem nedochází mu, že spolu s Jimovým útěkem to může vypadat, že za jeho zmizení a případnou smrt může právě Jim. Roku 2025 obdržel autor za román Pulitzerovu cenu.
