Sword

On 6 June 1944 when the Allied armies landed on D-Day, the Second World War had already lasted almost five years. Yet many of the British and American troops who invaded Normandy were virgin soldiers, never before committed to battle. They quit England in summertime to face within hours a storm of machine-gun and mortar fire. They witnessed scenes, above all of sudden death, such as no exercise had prepared them for. In Sword, veteran chronicler of war Max Hastings explores with extraordinary vividness the actions of the Commando brigade and Montgomery’s 3rd Infantry and 6th Airborne divisions on and around a single beach. He describes their frustrations, hopes, loves and fears through the apparently interminable years training and preparing in England, then their triumphs and tragedies on the beach and beyond. Here are the airborne assaults on the Caen Canal bridge and Merville Battery, the battles on the shoreline and against the German strongpoints inland, narrated and explained with all the insights that Hastings’ decades of study, veterans’ interviews and new archive research enable him to deploy. The book offers a searching analysis of why British troops did not reach Caen on 6 June, as Montgomery had promised Churchill that they would – and the story of the brigadier who was sacked for that failure. There is also a host of personal portraits of key figures from Commando leader Lord Lovat, famously brave but supremely arrogant, to Colonel Jim Eadie, whose tanks of the Staffordshire Yeomanry repulsed a panzer division in the last hours of 6 June, and some of the humbler participants to whom extraordinary things happened. This is the story of D-Day as you have never read it before, with the blend of narrative, analysis and human insight that made Max Hastings’ last book Operation Biting, like many of his earlier works, a Sunday Times No. 1 bestseller.

Guy's been pushing himself to the outer limits, as usual. There's no medals, no big ceremony at the end of it all. He's just driven by putting himself through the misery. And coming out smiling. Off the telly, Guy's gone on two epic bike rides, spanning over a dozen countries, led by his sat nav along multi-lane motorways and up remote goat tracks, sleeping on the roadside. He's been to Mablethorpe Beach, the destination for racing things that shouldn't be raced; he's entered one of the toughest motorcycle endurance events in the world (twice); and he's been working on the '300mph job' - that's the world record he's going for and he's building a bike to get him there. Read on, and let Guy Martin take you with him on his travels to the brink.

Peak Human

Golden ages are marked by periods of spectacular cultural flourishing, scientific exploration, technological achievement and economic growth: Ancient Greece gave us democracy and the rule of the law; out of Abbasid Baghdad came algebra and modern medicine, and the Dutch Republic furnished us with Europe's greatest artistic movements. As such, each has unique lessons to teach us about the world we live in today. But, all previous golden ages have proven finite, whether through external pressures or internal fracturing. In Peak Human, acclaimed historian Johan Norberg examines seven of humanity's greatest civilizations - ancient Athens, the Roman Republic, Abbasid Baghdad, Song China, Renaissance Italy, the Dutch Republic and the Anglosphere - and asks: how do we ensure that our current golden age doesn't end?

Disonance a fata morgána

Kniha Disonance a fata morgána je závěrečnou částí dlouhodobého projektu mapujícího českou literaturu 20. století, stejně jako metodologické možnosti, jimiž v současnosti disponuje literární historie. Projekt byl zahájen v roce 2010 publikací Dějiny nové moderny. Česká literatura v letech 1905–1923 a pokračoval pak dalšími díly: Lomy vertikál. Česká literatura v letech 1924–1934 (2014), Věk horizontál. Česká literatura v letech 1935–1947 (2017) a Chór a disonance. Česká literatura 1947–1963 (2022). Aktuální svazek se věnuje období od roku 1964 do roku 1971. Titul odkazuje k specifické charakteristice periody, která je typická kontradikcemi a paradoxy. Krátké období, v němž individualistické hlasy vítězily nad režimní „chóričností“ a otevíraly výhled do velkého světa svobody, bylo přerušeno drastickými událostmi okupace v srpnu 1968 a následnou „normalizací“.

Bad Friend

We live in a society that heroises romantic love over platonic love, yet despite the attempts to revolutionise Valentines to Galentines and even Malentines, we still prioritise romantic relationships over friendships. Just look at the language we have for each stage; from seeing each other to dating, committing to one another to getting engaged and married. We even have multiple options for the same meaning, whether it's fuck buddies, non-exclusive, no strings attached, friends with benefits or a casual relationship. But when a person will have on average seven to ten romantic relationships in their lifetime and twenty-nine friends, why is it that the conversation on love is far greater than the conversation on friendship? And when only six of these friendships will stand the test of time, this means that the average person will experience the ending of twenty-three friendships in their lifetime - that's three times the amount of romantic breakups. As someone who has gone through a dozen friendship breakups, Michelle began to think she was A Bad Friend. She grieved in silence, shrouded by shame and secrecy, because when society doesn't make room for a conversation about friendship breakups, you learn not to either. Just like a romantic break up, have one too many and society starts poking flaws in why your relationships keep ending. But what if you aren't the problem? What if the problem is the way we think about friendship breakup? ad Friend will remove the stigma from friendships breakups. It will spark a much-needed conversation around friendships, making us question everything we have been taught about them. It will help the reader identify what they're looking for in a friendship, explore friendship during life changes, help the reader heal from fractures in friendships, and give advice on how to end a friendship, rules for better friendships and how to make new friends. Bad Friend is the book for anyone who has ever been hurt by a friend but it's also the book to read to know that you are not one.

Superveloce

Shortlisted for Motorsports Book of the Year in the Charles Tyrwhitt Sports Book Awards 2026Shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year 2025Silverstone, 1950 – the first post-war Grand Prix and the birth of Formula One. The king and queen, alongside 150,000 spectators, watch in dismay as Italy’s Alfa Romeos scream past to claim the first three places. British cars are hopelessly outclassed by Alfa Romeos and Maseratis. How can it be, they all wonder, that Italy, its industry reduced to rubble by Allied bombs so recently, has set new standards of speed and style that leave the rest of the world for dust? Italy’s ability to outflank its more powerful and better-equipped neighbours is nothing new. At the turn of the century Italy made so few cars that its output wasn’t recorded, by 1907 Italian cars and drivers swept the board in the first Grand Prix season. In Superveloce, Peter Grimsdale explores the mystery of how a country with no industrial revolution, hampered by poverty, came to represent an innovation and flair that other countries struggled to match.  Grimsdale traces a century of Italian design genius, the rise of great marques such as Ferrari, Fiat and Alfa Romeo. We see the lives of fiercely charismatic and competitive drives like Ascari, Varzi and Nuvolari. Does the secret lie deep in Italy’s cultural heritage – in historic links between art and machine going back to da Vinci? Or is it simply ‘sprezzatura’ – the art of making something difficult look effortlessly easy?
