On Flowers

Amy Merrick is a rare and special kind of artist who uses flowers to help us see the familiar in a completely new way. Her gift is to revel in the unexpected-like a sunny spring arrangement housed in a paper coffee cup-and to overturn preconceptions, whether she's transforming a bouquet of supermarket carnations into a breathtaking centrepiece or elevating wild and weedy blooms foraged from city sidewalks. She uses the beauty that is waiting to be discovered all around us-in leaves, branches, seedpods, a fallen blossom-to tell a story of time and place. Merrick begins On Flowers with a primer containing all her hard-won secrets on the art of flower arranging, from selecting materials to mastering pleasing proportions. Then she brings readers along on her journey, with observations on flowers in New York City and at her family's summer home in rural New Hampshire, working on a flower farm off the coast of Washington State, and studying ikebana in a jewel-box flower shop in Kyoto. We learn how to send flowers like a florist, and how to arrange them like a farm girl. We discover the poignancy in humble wildflowers, and also celebrate the luxury of fragrant blousy blooms. Collected here is an anthology of floral inspiration, a love letter to nature by an exceptional, accidental florist.

To Me, He Was Just Dad

"The lowdown on what it's like to be raised by a legend. Frequently funny and consistently intimate. . . . A great read." --BookPage "Those searching for a moving Father's Day gift need look no further." --Publishers Weekly Men like John Wayne and John Lennon, Nolan Ryan and Bruce Lee, Cesar Chavez, Christopher Reeve, and Miles Davis have touched the lives of millions. But at home, to their children, they were not their public personas. They were Dad. Maybe Davis didn't leave the office at five o'clock to come home and play catch with his son Erin, but the man we see through Erin's eyes is so alive, so real, so not the "king of cool" (he taught his son to box, made a killer pot of chili, watched MTV alongside him) that it brings us to a whole new appreciation for the artist. Each of these forty first-person narratives--intimate, heartfelt, unvarnished, surprising, and profoundly universal--shows us not only a very different view of a figure we thought we knew but also a wholly fresh and moving idea of what it means to be a father.

True Links

Although to the uninitiated, links is synonymous with golf, in fact a links is a specific kind of golf course. It's located close to the sea, on dune-like terrain over sandy, infertile soil; this results in fast-running fairways, but the ever-changing maritime winds make playing the course the ultimate challenge in golf. After an entire chapter devoted to their #1 links - the Old Course at St. Andrews (birthplace of the game) George Peper and Malcolm Campbell examine the 50 next best links, all located in the British Isles, in detail. Later chapters cover links in other parts of the World (their list has 5 courses in North America) and the newest links, built in the last 25 years as part of the environmentally sensitive minimalist movement. Most of the courses are captured in their glory by esteemed golf photographer Iain Lowe.

Seriously Bitter Sweet

When Bittersweet was published in 2003, home bakers were left to rely on baking chocolate that was labelled simply 'bittersweet' or 'semisweet' with no further explanation of the content of the product. Fast forward to 2013 and the world of chocolate has changed dramatically. Now there are artisanal chocolatiers all over the globe making chocolates with cocoa in every percentage to yield recipes with very different results. To respond to this, Alice Medrich has updated Seriously Bitter Sweet and filled it with her vast knowledge of baking with chocolate. Each recipe contains notes for the baker, so whether you are baking with a mild 52 per cent chocolate from Scharffen Berger or an intense 72 per cent chocolate from Ghirardelli, the recipes can be customised to yield fantastic results.

How to Sleep

Sleep difficulties affect millions of people - and the problem is getting worse. The deluge of sleep advice out there, referred to collectively as "sleep hygiene" rules, consists mostly of isolated recommendations for things not to do, such as: Don't drink coffee close to bedtime. Don't watch TV in bed. Despite the popularity of these old rules, Dr. Rafael Pelayo tells us, sleep hygiene alone is rarely effective in helping people with serious sleep problems. We need new rules that reflect the growth of knowledge in sleep science and can effectively improve our health. Pelayo's approach is to first take a step back and teach us how sleep works. He explains that nobody sleeps through the night; that the need for sleep is biological, but the way we sleep is learned; how much sleep you actually need each night, and that you can't get by with less. Then, once readers understand sleep and why it's so essential to our health and well-being, he offers a clear path to better sleep, with a flexible approach that will work for anyone. He offers a strategy for combatting jet lag: use your circadian rhythms to your advantage by maximising your exposure to daylight. He advises you to think of napping like snacking: snacks are fine to tide you over during long stretches between meals, but if snacking too much or too late keeps you from eating dinner, it's a problem - same goes for naps and a good night's sleep! And he cautions that alcohol is a double-edged sword: it may help you fall asleep, but it also disrupts your sleep cycle. The information in this friendly, accessible book will help readers sleep better, wake up refreshed, and have a healthier life.

Grains for Every Season

Joshua McFadden's first book, the James Beard Award-winning and perennially bestselling Six Seasons, transformed the way we cook with vegetables. Now he's back with a new book that applies his maximalist approach to flavor and texture to cooking with grains. These knock-your-socks-off recipes include salads, soups, pastas, pizzas, grain bowls, breads-and even desserts. McFadden works as intuitively, as surprisingly, as deliciously with whole grains as he does with vegetables. Grains for Every Season will change the way we cook with barley, brown rice, buckwheat, corn, millet, oats, quinoa, rye, wheat (bulgur, farro, freekeh, spelt, wheat berries, and whole wheat flour), and wild rice. The book's 200 recipes are organized into chapters by grain type, unlocking information on where each one comes from, how to prepare it, and why the author-the multi-award-winning chef/owner of Ava Gene's in Portland-can't live without it. McFadden uses grains both whole and milled into flour. The many gluten-free recipes are clearly designated. McFadden reveals how each grain can be used in both savory and sweet recipes, from Meat Loaf with Barley and Mushrooms to Peanut Butter-Barley Cookies; from Buckwheat, Lime and Herb Salad to Buckwheat Cream Scones. He folds quinoa into tempura batter to give veggies extra pop and takes advantage of the nutty flavor of spelt flour for Cast-Iron Skillet Spelt Cinnamon Rolls. Four special foldout sections highlight seasonal variations on grain bowls, stir-fries, pizzas, pilafs, and more, to show how flexible and satisfying cooking with grains can be.

There's an ode to the panettone, the traditional Christmas sweet delight. A dedication to the magic of basil, Italy's "royal" herb. A love story between pasta and potatoes that examines the many dishes that marry these two starches in delicious harmony. And, of course, pasta information aplenty; it's featured in guides like that on the ultimate noodle, spaghetti, which includes all the different forms, the top spaghetti artisans in Italy, and the semolina flour mills and farmers. True Italians speak espresso, so readers will delight in the poster-like graphic that depicts 27 different types of espresso drinks. Tips for the kitchen include cooking beans in a chianti bottle-a trick Tuscan nonnas have been using for ages in the dish known as fagioli al fiasco. Learn how contemporary food trends (like the oh-so-hip orange wine, which Italians have been drinking for nearly 8,000 years) trace their roots to Italy. But the influence of Italian food doesn't stop at the table-an entire spread looks at the Italian Mafia's favorite dishes as seen in Hollywood, through the lenses of Scorsese, Leone, and Coppola. Let's Eat Italy! is a splendid exploration of this beloved cuisine, from pizza to gelato, Milan to Sicily, and from the many kitchens of Italy to your own.
