Montague Rhodes James makes his second appearance in the series in this, the seventh step into the Darkness. James came from Kent in South East England, and was a renowned scientist focusing on medieval art, literature, and architecture. He wrote short stories just for pleasure, and decided to publish them only after his friends persuaded him to do so.

The ninth step into the Darkness is called Love from the Dark Side, and it brings us to the climax of the series – the Darkness itself. It features The Tenant of the Cedars by Mary Elizabeth Penn – a story about the vengeance of the dead. Little is known of the author other than the fact that she was published in magazines in the late Victorian era.
