Kis angol nyelvtan

Angol nyelvkönyv a tanulni vágyóknak.

Alice in Wonderland

"Alices Abenteur im Wunderland "(translated by Antonie Zimmermann) was the first translation of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" to appear after the book's initial publication and success in 1865. Carroll himself supervised the production and printing of the German edition. His correspondence with Macmillan (his English publisher who conducted the negotiations with Leipzig) reveals how exacting he was over such matters as format, margins, picture placement, paper, binding, price, and even certain textual details. When the translation finally appeared in 1869, Carroll was immensely pleased with it and presented a specially bound copy to Princess Beatrix, the daughter of Queen Victoria. The translation of Alice's "Adventures in Wonderland" has always presented a special problem. The humor, popular children's verses, songs, and especially the puns were thought at first to make it untranslatable. The problem was solved by Antonie Zimmermann with the hearty approval of Carroll by substituting popular German children's verses and puns for the English originals. "How Doth the Little Crocodile?" for instance, is turned into a parody of a German Romantic ballad. All in all, this is still the best of the 15 or more German translations."

The Expert at the Card Table - Classic Treatise on Card Manipulation

"The Expert at the Card Table is the most famous, the most carefully studied book ever published on the art of manipulating cards at gaming tables." --from the Foreword by Martin Gardner. For almost a century, this book has been considered indispensable to attaining the highest level of card mastery. In it, S. W. Erdnase, a supreme master of card manipulation, teaches card enthusiasts how to perform the dazzling tricks and sleights -- many of them his own creations -- that made him famous. The first section of the book deals with card table artifice, or, to put it more bluntly, cheating at cards. Step by step, Mr. Erdnase demonstrates his own systems of false shuffling, false riffling and cutting, dealing from the bottom, and such slick moves as palming cards, "skinning the hand" -- even three-card monte. The second section covers legerdemain: the art of forcing a card, one- and two-hand transformations, the devious "slide" and more. Card handlers will love Erdnase's selection of dazzling card tricks, including The Acrobatic Jacks, The Exclusive Coterie, The Divining Rod, The Invisible Flights, A Mind Reading Trick, and many others. In an informative Foreword to this edition, Martin Gardner relates the unhappy details of the author's personal life, and recounts the history of this famous book, whose methods, Mr. Gardner asserts, "are as useful today by magicians and card hustlers as they were in 1902. This book is still the bible of card 'mechanics, ' and as much a delight to read as it was in the early years of this century."

David Copperfield

"Like many fond parents, I have in my heart of hearts a favourite child," confessed Charles Dickens in the preface of this novel, "and his name is David Copperfield." Millions of readers have taken young David into their hearts as well, weeping over his misfortunes and exulting in his triumphs. Dickens' seventh novel, "David Copperfield," appeared in 1850, by which time he was a British national institution. Based on the author's own tumultuous journey from boy to man, this epic traces David's progress from his mother's sheltering arms to the miseries of boarding-school and sweatshop, and the rewards of friendship, romance, and self-discovery in his vocation as a writer. In addition to its compelling narrative, the great appeal of" David Copperfield" lies in its memorable cast of characters. From Mr. Murdstone, the brutal stepfather, to the scheming clerk Uriah Heep, the novel is peopled by vividly observed characters. Nursemaid Peggoty, bursting with vitality, leaves a trail of flying buttons in her wake. Grandiloquent Mr. Micawber is ever-confident that something will turn up to save his large brood from penury. Kind by wildly eccentric, Aunt Betsey Trotwood accepts counsel from the wise fool, Mr. Dick, and provides a heated reception for trespassing donkeys. Dickens' genius was comic, and "David Copperfield" reflects his view of existence as a mixture of laughter and tears -- with laughter uppermost.
