Rural Modern

Modernism crashed into the American consciousness right after the Second World War, although it had existed in the minds and works of American and German-born architects for almost 40 years prior. While it offered a new design paradigm that would transform the urban landscape from New York to New Delhi, modernism was a slow burn for residential architects. The sharp edges and simple geometries were a hard sell for the American design psyche. A group of innovative architects in the USA took Bauhaus modernism and gave it a vernacular face. They borrowed forms from the simple utilitarian buildings found in rural environments and created a new strain of modernism. Russell Abraham dubs this style 'rural modernism' - a modern aesthetic with a vernacular palette. The result of several ingenious ideas blended together to create a contemporary, sustainable and highly liveable architecture, these houses respect the past while looking forward to the future.Orienting windows to capture heat in winter and provide sun protection in summer is standard, while other sustainable design features include solar-thermal systems, subterranean heat sinks, geothermal trenches and rainwater collection systems - all of which are incorporated to make the most of the natural resources available in rural settings.

Houses + Origins

This beautifully illustrated monograph takes the reader on a journey through a number of stunning houses in the California landscape, designed and built by Berkeley firm WA Design. Since being established by David Stark Wilson in 1985, the firm has completed a broad range of new residential and commercial projects. This book focuses on WA Design's residential buildings. The firm's design philosophy emphasises the interrelationship of building and site. Each design begins as a considered response to a set of criteria dictated by the site and client. Although progressive, the firm's designs draw heavily on the local vernacular. Ordering principles borrow from the building's context and often relate metaphorically to the natural landscape, connecting the buildings to their site and surroundings in a meaningful way. Sustainable and solar features are also a crucial component in the firm's design objectives and are seamlessly integrated with the architecture.

Illustration

The power of the illustration is brilliantly demonstrated in another compact volume from New York designer Bob Gill. In this book, simply but eloquently entitled Illustration , he features many of his favorite works, completed between 1952 and 2004. Subjects for his often whimsical, but always potent illustrations range from people and things to the more fanciful characters that populate several of the children's books he has written and illustrated. Some drawings have been at the center of successful advertising campaigns, others are less overt but particularly powerful political statements. A short, witty description places each image into the context of its time and purpose.
