Amennyire jól működött az amerikai propagandagépezet a nácikkal szemben, úgy vallott sokáig csúfos kudarcot a hidegháború alatt. Ronald Reagan elnökségéig, azaz a ’70-es évek végéig az ideológiai párharc győztesei a „jó szándékú”, „békepárti” és „modernizáló” kommunisták voltak. Az amerikai egyetemekről kitóduló értelmiségiek közül sokan „tették a dolgukat”, igaz, a szovjet titkosszolgálat rendíthetetlen szorgalma és tengernyi pénze nyomán, dicsőítették a „gonosz birodalmát”.Kivételt képez az 1945-ben alapított Commentary folyóirat, amely eleinte az amerikai zsidó értelmiség fóruma volt, majd az antikommunista küzdelem és a neokonzervatív eszmék legfontosabb műhelyévé nőtte ki magát. Kötetünk Joshua Muravchik, a Commentary állandó szerzőjének válogatásában több fontos szöveget tesz elérhetővé a magyar olvasóközönség számára. A könyvet Békés Márton történész, az amerikai neokonzervativizmus legjobb hazai ismerője szerkesztette. Minden győzelem szavakkal kezdődik. A kommunizmus feletti győzelem sok fontos mondata a Commentaryben látott először napvilágot.

Hogyan tekintenek a kínaiak önmagukra, a világra és a jövő kihívásaira? Hol van Kína, és mi is valójában: hová lett a régi kínaiak hagyományos copfja, hová Mao kerékpárjai és egyenruhája? Hol vannak a nagycsaládok a sok ágyassal? Köddé vált minden, ami a kínaiak és a külföldiek által mesélt történetek révén évszázadokon át Kínává tette e hatalmas országot. Kína ma a felhőkarcolók, limuzinok, szupergyors vonatok és a sci-fi-be illő repülőterek országa, az éjszakánként a tűzijátékoknál is erősebben világító, vakító neonfényeké. A kínaiak változnak, és a felismerhetetlenségig megváltoztak. Tulajdonképpen annyira megváltoztak, hogy nem is igen látják magukat jelenlegi formájukban. E hatalmas átváltozás kellős közepén nem is tudjuk, mikor szilárdul meg az új forma, ha egyáltalán megszilárdul. Ahogy azt sem: milyen tudati változást hoz majd ez a folyamat a kínaiakban és mindazokban, akik a világ többi részén Kínát figyelemmel kísérik. Ez a könyv e forradalmi változást kutatja. Azt a változást, amely feltehetően az egész világra nézve a legnagyobb hatással lesz a Római Birodalom bukása óta.

What challenges are facing the Western world in the early 21st century? What fate is awaiting the nation states? Will they continue to exist or will they be replaced by empires? What will the role of the state be? Will it shrink and lose significance or, on the contrary, grow stronger? Will everybody have to work, will they have a job in the future? In all events, will there be enough work for all? And what fate is awaiting the family? How about belief? What will follow from the prolongation of human life? Can social welfare systems, one of the most important achievements of the 20th century, be maintained? Can we wait until the West offers new answers and proposals for solutions or should we make up our minds and follow our own ideas? These are some of the questions to which Mária Schmidt seeks answers in this volume. While her point of view is undoubtedly that of a historian, her thoughts are focused on the future.

Scholarly approaches cannot deal with spirituality or faith and hate amnesia, while they are diametrically opposed to the world of fables. Nevertheless, I am going to make an attempt here to use rational and justifiable – scholarly – argumentation in the interpretation of what belongs much more to national imagination than to the world of provable facts. Spirituality, amnesia and fables will be addressed, hopefully without spirituality, amnesia and fable-like features.

Az 1914-ben kezdődött és világméretűvé dagadt összecsapás felrobbantotta és megszüntette a régi világot, miközben utat nyitott egy új, minden korábbinál kegyetlenebb korszaknak, amelyet rövid huszadik századnak szokás nevezni. A Nagy Háborúról szóló első értelmezési kísérletek magából a háború logikájából sarjadtak, és a gonosz, illetve a jó közötti küzdelemként írták le az eseményeket. Ez az értelmezés máig sok hívet tudhat magáénak. Schmidt Mária történész nagyívű esszéje az egyik első szellemi próbálkozás, hogy túllépjünk az ellentétpárokkal operáló magyarázatokon. Csak száz év telt el azóta, így kijelenthető: ez a könyv igazi kezdet. Sokan fognak még hivatkozni rá.

The global conflagration that erupted in 1914 exploded the old world and opened the way to a new, unprecedentedly cruel era – the 20th century. Early attempts to interpret the Great War described it as a clash between good and evil. That narrative is still shared by many. Mária Schmidt’s wide-ranging analysis attempts to transcend these diametrically-opposed explanations of the war. With a mere 100 years of hindsight, we can say that this book marks a real beginning. It will serve as a reference for many future studies.

Die ersten Interpretationsversuche vom „Großen Krieg“ entsprangen der ureigensten Kriegslogik, die Ereignisse als ein Ringen zwischen Gut und Böse zu beschreiben. Diese Interpretationsart hat bis heute viele Anhänger. Die Historikerin Mária Schmidt unternimmt mit dem vorliegenden Essay als eine der ersten den ehrgeizigen Versuch, diesen mit Gegensatzpaaren operierenden Erklärungsansatz hinter sich zu lassen. Nyugtalanító jelenséggel kell szembenéznünk. A Nyugat nem érti a kommunizmus szorításából magukat több mint harminc éve kiszabadító országoknak a szuverenitásért és a szellemi önállóságért folytatott küzdelmét, az egykori Vasfüggöny mögötti népek pedig értetlenül állnak a Nyugat érzéketlensége és az általa képviselt, magának kizárólagosságot követelő neomarxista történelemszemlélet előtt. Schmidt Mária ebben a könyvében fejezetről fejezetre teszi mérlegre az elmúlt három évtizedet. Olvasva egymásra épülő, elemző és értelmező esszéit, hamar kibontakoznak azok a törésvonalak, amelyek ezeket a nyugtalanító jelenségeket okozzák. Érdemes leszögeznünk: ez a könyv csak itt, Közép-Európában születhetett meg. 2020-ban ez a régió a világ legszabadabb térsége, ahol a múlt századi totális eszmerendszerek tapasztalatával, valamint a nemzeti függetlenségért, a hazáért vívott szabadságharcok hatalmas örökségével felvértezve lehet felvenni a küzdelmet a Nyugat által képviselt és a diktatúrákat jellemző egyneműsítő szándékkal.

Minden a kultúrában veszi kezdetét, rajta keresztül történik és oda is tér vissza. Aki a kultúra hegemóniáját felismeri és benne ki tudja alakítani a maga hegemóniáját, az végül mindent megnyer. A kulturális többség megszerzése előbb-utóbb ugyanis politikai többség kialakulásához vezet. Ez a könyv útmutató ahhoz, hogy miért, mivel és hogyan lehet a politika hátterében ható kulturális szférát meghódítani. Vagyis a kulturális hatalomért folytatott küzdelem elméletéről és gyakorlatáról szól, arról, hogy miként hozzunk létre kulturális hegemóniát.

We are facing a worrying moment. The West doesn’t understand the struggle that the nations which liberated themselves from the stranglehold of Communism 30 years ago are waging for sovereignty and intellectual autonomy. Meanwhile the peoples on the other side of what used to be the Iron Curtain are perplexed by the insensitivity shown by the West and by the neo-Marxist view of history it now upholds, which claims an exclusive right to interpret the past. In this book, from one chapter to the next, Mária Schmidt weighs the past three decades in the balance. Following the powerful logic of her analytical and interpretative essays, the reader swiftly discovers the fault lines causing the disconcerting divisions between East and West. It is worth pointing out that such a book could only have been conceived here, in Central Europe. In 2020, this region is the freest one in the world. Its citizens are armed with the experience of the totalitarian ideological systems of the past century, as well as the mighty heritage of their struggles for national independence. We are ready and able to face the struggle against any attempt to impose forced conformity on us – the normal practice of dictatorships, which is now being practised by the West.

The primary aim of the present book is to come to terms with the relationship of Jewish Hungarians and the modern history of Hungary. Typical interpretations are briefly reviewed and, obviously, attempts are made to put forward an own interpretation. Needless to say, the issues discussed in a Hungarian context can also be seen from a much more general perspective. In other words, the question that the present volume aims to answer is: Could the explanatory power of national history be strong enough if defined in a homogenized narrative? Can the stories of people who consider themselves to belong to one nation but who have a very different historical background be linked in any way? From a modern viewpoint, the term Jewish is a rather delicate one in itself. It is largely influenced by the various manifestations of the joint power of anti-Semitism and the self-image of the one-time homogeneous Jewish community that has evolved as a result. This joint power is so strong that it highlights descent even where it would otherwise be less significant. Nevertheless, it is the very fate of Jewish Hungarians that shows us how entirely different experiences can accumulate within a national community that is considered homogeneous. In fact, we could as well abandon the homogenized concept of the Hungarian nation and see the Hungarian past as an integrative national history. The “other” is also Hungarian: the Hungarian other. This Hungarianness might be slightly different, yet this difference does not make it less Hungarian. This has always been so and will most probably remain so in the future.

Szétporladt a hidegháború vége óta ismert világunk. Az előző évek kihívásai világossá tették, hogy lehetetlen a kitaposott úton továbbmennünk. Fel kell ismernünk, hogy egy új rend új típusú próbatételeivel állunk szemben. Ehhez alkalmazkodnunk létszükséglet. Nem halogathatjuk tovább, hogy megfejtsük, mégis hogy jutottunk idáig, és ami ennél is fontosabb: hogyan tovább? Schmidt Mária esszékötete ehhez nyújt támpontot. Nincs sok időnk: korszakhatárhoz érkeztünk.
