If I Can Dream

If I Can Dream is a richly detailed biography of English footballing icon Terry Venables, telling the story of his playing career, managerial successes (and failures) and fascinating life away from the pitch. If there was a year when English football exploded into the public consciousness it was 1996. It was the summer when the phrase "Football's coming home" echoed from car radios, when Alan Shearer and Paul Gascoigne orchestrated England's campaign in the European Championship that captivated a nation. At the centre of it all was Terry Venables, managing England in what, remarkably, was his only international tournament. He was not the most successful man to manage England, but he was unquestionably the most interesting. As a manager and coach, he was startlingly successful. He was 39 when he took Queens Park Rangers to an FA Cup final, 43 when he steered Barcelona to their first La Liga title in a dozen years. An estimated one million people cam on to the city's streets to welcome the team home from the airport. The tributes on his death in 2023 spoke of a man of enormous achievements who might have achieved very much more. In this World Cup summer, with the 30th anniversary of Euro 96, interest in that team and the man at its centre will peak once more. If I Can Dream will feature interviews with every available major figure in Terry Venables’s life.

A Spy in the Family

Johanna van Haarlem looks across the Old Bailey courtroom to the hawk-featured man in the dock. There is no expression on his face. No remorse. And certainly no love. For over 10 years, she had believed he was Erwin van Haarlem, the son she gave up for adoption as a baby in the chaos of Europe in World War Two. She'd embraced him into her family and showered him with all the love he'd missed as a child. Then she lost her son a second time when the police told her the man she now faced in court was an imposter. Apparently his real name was Vaclav Jelinek. But Special Branch, MI5 and even the judge who sentenced Erwin van Haarlem to prison in 1989 as the last Soviet Bloc agent of the Cold War had no clue to his real identity - he was the spy with no name. Using the name Erwin van Haarlem, he was ordered by his masters to spy on the Royal Family and the Labour Party, to infiltrate Jewish groups and plunder the West's nuclear secrets. But his biggest betrayal was to the woman he tricked into believing she was his mother for more than a decade. It was only after British intelligence caught the spy red-handed sending coded messages to Prague from his London flat that Johanna was finally forced to accept that the charming art dealer that she thought was Erwin was a professional liar. She had wanted so much to believe that he was her son that she had ignored one crucial clue that gave him away - his eyes were brown, and her baby's eyes were blue. In A Spy In The Family, investigative journalists Paul Henderson and David Gardner reveal the incredible untold story of the mother who lost her son twice.

War Babies

A collection of interviews with men and women from the Silent Generation - those born between 1928 and 1945 - about their childhood experiences during World War Two "Those men and women who donned uniforms to 'do their bit' were not the only ones affected by a conflict that turned the world upside down. Many millions of children also lived through the war."Each November we remember the sacrifice and courage of the soldiers, sailors and airmen who fought in two world wars. Sadly, as each year passes, only a handful of veterans survive to tell their stories, and those of their comrades who paid the ultimate price. But there's another group of women and men, themselves now elderly, who also survived a war. They may not have borne arms, or worn a uniform, but they too faced war's horrors - as children - and they bear its scars. They may not be war veterans but they are war's victims and survivors. Author Chris Manby and social historian Simon Robinson finally give a voice to those children, and tell some of the very few untold stories of World War Two. Tales of hardship, danger, brutality and terror. "Alongside their parents and grandparents, they too faced the blitzes, lived on rations and were, in many terrible cases, imprisoned, subjected to torture and used as slave labour. Though the children of World War Two were too young to serve they were not too young to suffer."Moving, compelling, tragic and uplifting, it is also a story of our times as the authors say... "A new generation of children is spending nights in bomb shelters, becoming refugees and losing their loved ones. Perhaps listening to the voices of those who were children during World War Two, and examining how their lives developed in the decades that followed, can help us to better understand how to support this new band of war babies in the years to come. It's time for the Silent Generation's stories to be heard."

Hear Me

"Having lived through these experiences and been unable to speak out - not knowing how to use my voice to ask for help - I am thrilled that I am finally being heard and my story is being told."This is a memoir about childhood neglect; childhood sexual abuse; and living in care - but it is also one of the best examples of resilience and survival. Groomed and abused as a child, Liz could easily have crumbled. Instead, she stood up and saw justice done. But Hear Me is more than one woman's story - as remarkable and powerfully written as that story is. It is also a call to arms for the unheard victims across the country. Liz is fiercely passionate about spreading awareness of child neglect, abuse, poverty, living in care and how that can impact people throughout life, and limit their chances of achieving their full potential. She is determined to have an impact on this subject, to be a voice for change. Until these topics are highlighted on prime-time TV, on drive time radio shows, and are discussed around the dinner table and in the playground, abusers will continue to abuse, protected by a blanket of fear. Liz is hopeful her story will contribute to a change in the culture we live in. Despite the horrors she has endured, Hear Me is also a beautifully, sometimes even funny, memoir which will make readers stop in their tracks and really think.
