Henri Cartier-Bresson: Here and Now

This lavishly illustrated monograph published to accompany Frances first major retrospective since the photographers death in 2004 traces Cartier-Bressons development as a photographer, activist, journalist and artist. In addition to some of Cartier-Bressons best-known photographs, included here are many seldom seen or unpublished images and some rarities in colour as well as black-and-white. From his earliest photographs in Paris in the 1920s and Africa in the 1930s, Cartier-Bressons capacity to conjure coherence and harmony out of a chaotic world appears effortless and innate a deep-centred attitude rather than a merely learned technique. His observations of the effects of poverty and revolution around the world led directly to his pioneering photojournalism and to his co-founding of Magnum Photos. He became renowned for his penetrating portraits of the most prominent figures of his time, becoming, in the words of his biographer Pierre Assouline, the eye of the century.

Nordic Light

The quality of light in the higher latitudes has given rise to some of the most important and influential architecture of the modern period. In the Scandinavian countries, in particular, the ethereal nature of light combined with natural resources and highly refined building techniques, not to mention the stark seasonal contrast between the scarcity of light in winter and the ever-present glow of long summer days, have provided the context for architectural acts of genius. This book celebrates established icons, newly discovered gems, and contemporary masterworks that represent the highest expression of Scandinavian design and response to the environment. Just under fifty projects are featured in detail, ordered according to the way in which different light conditions have imparted qualities to the buildings. Henry Plummer treats his subject with a uniquely authoritative perspective in which the words resonate with his artfully taken images.

Global Art Compass

In the past, writers and critics such as Goethe, Ruskin, and Clement Greenberg perpetuated particular ideas about art and even dictated these ideas to the artists themselves. Today, artists no longer have to follow one prevailing theory and the art world is less centralized in particular cities: New York, London, Paris, Berlin, and Beijing all offer rich environments to artists but none are designated as the exclusive center of the art world. In Global Art Compass, Alistair Hicks demonstrates his belief that no single curator, critic, or dealer should monopolize our view of what is happening in the art world today, but that by listening to the artists themselves, we can gradually make out an ever-evolving web of patterns, relationships, and themes. Organized by continent and including extracts from interviews with artists from around the world, the book offers a fresh view of the contemporary art world through artists from France, Albania, Slovakia, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, The United States, China, India, and beyond. The range of artists whose work is explored includes Laure Prouvost, Anri Sala, Roman Ondák , Gabriel Orozco, Sandra Gamarra , Cai Guo-Qiang, and Nandan Ghiya, among many others. The results of Hicks’s approach clearly show that the preoccupations of artists in the 21st century are largely universal: that ever-faster communications are balanced by a resistance to globalization; that an awareness of the unprecedented complexity of our world is equaled by a rising skepticism of the systems that impose order on our lives; and that while art is seen by many as a commodity, it also has the power to be a regenerative tool.

How to Read Impressionist Painting

How to Read an Impressionist Painting is a new, original exploration of the hugely popular and revolutionary 19th-century art movement. James Rubin organizes his discussion by subject matter, rather than by artist, looking at urban views and city life, interiors and still life, family and friends, and other common themes. By avoiding an artist-based structure, and without the convention of a chronological approach, he provides readers with the tools to think critically and analytically about Impressionism as a movement, and offers a new understanding of the collective momentum that drove the artists to work with such originality and commitment to modern themes and pictorial originality.
