Proto - How One Ancient Language Went Global
One ancient language transformed our world. This is its story.
Star. Stjarna. Stare. Thousands of miles apart, people look up at the night sky and use the same word to describe what they see.
Listen to these English, Icelandic and Iranic words and you can hear echoes of one of the most extraordinary journeys in humanity’s past. All three of these languages – and hundreds more – share a single ancient ancestor.
Five millennia ago, in a mysterious Big Bang of its own, this proto tongue exploded, forming new worlds as it spread east and west. Today, nearly half of humanity speaks an Indo-European language. How did this happen?
In Proto, acclaimed journalist Laura Spinney sets off to find out. With her we travel the length of the steppe, navigating the Caucasus, the Silk Roads and the Hindu Kush. We follow in the footsteps of nomads and monks, Amazon warriors and lion kings – the ancient peoples who spread these tongues far and wide. In the present, Spinney meets the linguists, archaeologists and geneticists racing to recover this lost world. What they have discovered has vital lessons for our modern age, as people and their languages are on the move again.
Proto is a revelatory portrait of world history in its own words.
How to Be a Dissident
An invigorating guide to fighting back – part philosophy, part history and part how-to guide for living with integrity in an age of authoritarian drift.
How do we push back in a world where political leaders wield fear and where social media misinforms? We need role models to show us how, and here, acclaimed writer Gal Beckerman goes looking for them.
Drawing on the stories of dissidents from around the globe and across time, from Socrates to Ai Weiwei, and Hannah Arendt to Iris Murdoch, Beckerman reveals the defining characteristics these extraordinary figures share and how they might equip anyone navigating the pressures of modern tyranny.
Structured around ten qualities – among them, Be Pessimistic, Be Funny, Be Reckless and Be Immortal – this illuminating book charts a dissident’s journey from the solitary moment of recognising the truth, through the risks of speaking it and on to the last impact they can have.
Urgent and inspiring, Beckerman shows us that dissidence is a human capacity that we can all cultivate: a refusal to betray one’s inner voice, no matter how great the forces around us. How to Be a Dissident lights the way.
Skanzen
Láska a intimita neposkytují východisko ani naplnění, spíše bývají zdrojem úzkosti, mocenskou hrou, promarněnou šancí.
A upřímně, ani už si nejsem jistá, jestli utíkat chci.

The Summer Proposal (Deluxe Edition)
*The deluxe limited edition comes with designed edges*
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Vi Keeland comes a steamy, standalone hockey romance.
No strings attached…right?
Georgia first meets Max Yearwood on a blind date, and their chemistry is off the charts. He's insanely gorgeous and funny, with the biggest dimples she's ever laid eyes on. Exactly what she needs after her breakup.
Or so she thinks…until her real date arrives.
Turns out, Max was only pretending to be the guy she was there to meet, and to say she's disappointed is an understatement. But before he leaves, Max slips Georgia a ticket to a hockey game a few blocks away in case things don't work out on her actual date.
When they don't, she takes a chance and stops by the game on her way home. The seat next to hers is empty, but as a player's face flashes on the Jumbotron, Georgia freezes at his familiar smile.
You guessed it: dimples.
Max is the perfect guy for Georgia right now-fun, sexy, up for anything, and only around for a few months before he moves to a new team three thousand miles away. He proposes they spend the summer helping Georgia forget about her ex, and it sounds like a good plan.
Then again, you know what they say about the best laid plans…
Take Me To Your Leader
If you met an alien, what might it be like?
Ever since childhood, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson has wanted to be abducted by aliens. Here, he draws upon a lifetime's fascination to explore the science of alien life - and to offer a practical guide to your first alien encounter.
Would an alien really be a humanoid with a pointy head, or might it look more like a worm, a roving cloud of gas, or perhaps a 'testicle monster'? How should you communicate with an alien who didn't speak English, and what does it have to do with the Pythagorean Theorem? Why has no alien (apparently) ever contacted us, and what does that say about our species' likeability? And if an alien did demand 'Take me to your leader!', who are you actually meant to take it to?
Touching on Star Wars and Spielberg, UFOs and Area 51, Take Me to Your Leader is both a romping work of popular science and a love letter to our as-yet-uncontacted extraterrestrial friends. It is the most entertaining book ever written by one of the best-loved scientists in the world, and perhaps in the galaxy.

First Helpings
What should children eat and why? How should they eat it and what should they learn about food? Answers to questions like these have differed over time. First Helpings explores the relationship between children and food in history, drawing on a rich variety of social records, cookery and etiquette books and children’s literature. Topics covered include breast versus bottle feeding, the difference between ‘adult’ and ‘children’s’ food and drink, table manners, school meals and learning to cook. Albon and Palmer discuss wider social issues, such as teaching children about the ethics of food choices, the role children have played in food production and the ever-present scandal of hungry children in society. First Helpings provides a unique look at childhood and eating that relates past to present and considers ways forward.
Asian American History
Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, InspiringAsians have migrated to North America for centuries, in search of opportunities and conveyed by increasingly dense, international circuits of trade, labor markets, and family networks. Drawn by the riches promised by the relatively undeveloped, but not unpopulated, New World, Asians joined a diverse array of immigrants arriving in capacities such as merchants, farmers, fishermen, soldiers, missionaries, artists and artisans, industrial and agricultural laborers, technicians and scientists, journalists, sailors, diplomats, tourists, bankers, students, and entrepreneurs of every stripe. They contributed significantly to the massive transformation of the United States into the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the world, particularly on the west coast and Hawaii. Unlike their European counterparts, however, Asians challenged American conceptions of racial homogeneity and national culture which produced legislative and institutional efforts to segregate them through immigration laws, restrictions on citizenship, and limits on employment, property ownership, access to public services, and civil rights. Only with World War II, the Cold War, and the Civil Rights era''s remaking of racial ideologies and forging of a more egalitarian, multiethnic democracy Asian Americans have gained ground and acceptance, albeit in the still stereotyped category of "model minorities."Asian American History: A Very Short Introduction provides a narrative interpretation of key themes that emerge in the history of Asian migrations to North America. Clearly written and elegantly argued, this book complements typical American history narratives by highlighting how Asian immigration has shaped the evolution of ideological and legal interpretations of America as a "nation of immigrants."ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Kevin Chen rozehrává podmanivý příběh o tom, co nás nikdy nepřestává pronásledovat a co si nás nakonec vždycky najde. Mezinárodně úspěšný román zároveň otevírá prostor k nečekaně blízkému setkání s autorovým rodným Tchaj-wanem.
No Time to Spare
Ursula Le Guin took readers to imaginary worlds for decades. In her last great frontier of life, old age, she explored a new literary territory: the blog, a forum where she shone.
The collected best of Le Guin's blog, No Time to Spare, presents perfectly crystallised dispatches on what mattered to her late in life, her concerns with the world and her wonder at it.
She brings her signature wit and wisdom to topics as diverse as ageing, imaginative literature, capitalism, her beloved rescue cat, classism, cultural perceptions of fantasy and the courage and resolution involved in eating an egg from the shell.
This is essential reading for Le Guin's myriad admirers, revealing new sides to a trailblazing and beloved author who influenced literary greats across genres and generations.
The Dispossessed
Shevek, a brilliant physicist, was raised on Anarres, a barren moon with no government, army, laws, or police that has long been isolated from other worlds because of its rigid dedication to radical equality.
Shevek's work promises a breakthrough that could alter the course of human civilisation, but to realise it, he must journey to Urras: a planet dazzling in its beauty and advancement yet fractured by hierarchy.
Though initially welcomed by this unfamiliar civilisation, Shevek soon finds himself caught between competing visions of freedom, a bridge - and a threat - to both. In the conflict that ensues, he must reexamine his beliefs, even as he ignites the fires of change.
From the inimitable Ursula K. Le Guin, The Dispossessed is a true classic of the twentieth century, a moving story about what it means to return home and a must-read science fiction masterpiece.

Kozliatka - Rozprávka o kozliatkach, ale poslušných/ ale neposlušných, 2. vydanie
Známu rozprávku o neposlušných kozliatkach a zlom vlkovi napísala Mária Rázusová-Martáková.
Obidve rozprávky filigránsky spojené do jednej knihy ilustroval vynikajúci ilustrátor Vladimír Král.
Všetci sme navzájom prepojení – stromy, huby, zvieratá i ľudia.
Ilustrácie: Andrea Tachezy
Preklad: Zuzana Stanislavová
