Scarborough of the 1940s to 1960s was a fascinating place for a young bus enthusiast. Travelling from Hull to visit relatives at Newby, outside Scarborough, whether for a day or longer, provided an opportunity not only to observe and ride on United’s buses, but also to travel by East Yorkshire buses.The main attraction was United’s buses which were often in a state of transformation, from 1930s Leyland Titans to the forward-entrance Lodekkas of the 1960s. They were always well turned out in smart red-and-cream livery. Especially fascinating were the three variants of the centre-entrance single-deckers which worked the seafront service. In summer, frequencies were intensive to serve crowds of holidaymakers at the attractions, especially near the Corner Café and on the seafront.East Yorkshire used 1930s Titans (some with new bodies), post-war Titans with ‘Beverley Bar’ bodywork, Bridgemasters and Renowns, while the West Yorkshire fleet had standard Bristol double-deckers and saloons, some with ‘Bible-style’ destination indicators.This selection of evocative photographs provides a flavour of a long-departed but not forgotten time on Scarborough’s buses.

Bahamian Islanders on the Maritime Highway
Once regarded as a critical maritime highway in the wake of British abolition, the channels of The Bahamas became a crossroads where freedom, commerce, and control collided. As trade relationships shifted and power was renegotiated across the Atlantic world, the archipelago’s porous geography created opportunities for newly emancipated Black people—and, at the same time, for those determined to reassert systems of racial and economic dominance. Captive Audience
Lieutenant John Blomfield Dixon, East Riding Yeomanry, was twenty years old when he was captured near the village of Watou, Belgium, on 31 May 1940 during the retreat to Dunkirk. His combat career had been short but eventful, and now he began a long journey in captivity. He would be held in number of Oflags, POW camps for officers, including Laufen, Warburg, Posen, Biberach and finally Eichstätt in Bavaria. During his captivity, John recorded the highs and lows of camp life in a series of diaries. As the war progressed, he became more involved in camp theatrical productions, which included works by William Shakespear, Noël Coward and Benjamin Britten. John often played female roles, which he eventually grew to hate. He was finally released on 10 May 1945 after five long years behind the wire.Paul Johnson explores John’s account – his military service and capture, camp life, the efforts to escape, the killing of comrades, his hatred of both captors and captives, his participation in many theatrical performances, a forbidden love and his eventual return home. A fascinating selection of black and white and colourised photographs is also featured, depicting the life, laughs and love of a British POW in Germany during the Second World War.

The world of motorcycling is split like many parts of the world of motoring enthusiasm by the identity of its members’ vehicles. As with motor cars, every motorcycle make is identified by a specific marque name and badge, the origins of which are both wide-ranging and fascinating.Some makes remain well known, such as Triumph (a name chosen to be easily recognisable in every language) and Harley Davidson (named after the company’s founders), while other marques have been swallowed up by history. Once-great British names such as BSA (a name created from the initials of the parent company Birmingham Small Arms) and Douglas (named after the company founders) are no longer with us, but their owners’ clubs keep their names alive and well. BSA motorcycles would be badged with a ‘piled arms’ symbol comprising three rifles, while Douglas would acquire the figure of a Scotsman called ‘Douglas’. Overseas, Honda would choose a winged ‘H’ for all its motorcycles and Laverda would use the colours of the Italian flag.Michael Burgess explores the intriguing history of the names and badges of motorcycle manufacturers from around the world, some well-known, some more obscure, with a selection of high-quality images.

The cultural sequences unearthed at Sakas are Neolithic, Neolithic-Chalcolithic and Chalcolithic. It examines multiple parameters, including the in-situ burial arrangements, demographic profiles, metric analysis, skeletal morphology, and palaeopathological markers. The analysis yielded significant insights into dietary habits, morphological variations, and indicators of habitual stress. Evidence of congenital conditions and degenerative pathologies suggests patterns of physically intensive labour and repetitive biomechanical stress. One of the study''s most notable discoveries was the identification of ischial bursitis (Weaver’s Bottom) in two individuals – an atypical condition within archaeological contexts, as this is reported for the first time in the Indian context and is likely indicative of prolonged seated activities or chronic pressure on the ischial region. Overall, the study provides a nuanced understanding of the health, lifestyle, and labour patterns of the people residing in the region, offering valuable contributions to the bioarchaeological record of ancient India. This book is the product of an interdisciplinary effort drawing upon archaeology and bioarchaeology.
