Pojem grafický román se v německojazyčném prostoru od počátku 21. století proměnil z marketingového označení v respektovanou literární a uměleckou kategorii. Z původně okrajového fenoménu se stal plnohodnotný předmět literárněvědného bádání i kulturní reprezentace. Tato publikace sleduje cestu grafického románu k uznání a mapuje její tematickou i formální rozmanitost.
Grafické romány se dotýkají dějin i současnosti: reflektují nacismus, holocaust či život v NDR, zabývají se migrací, rasismem, genderovými otázkami nebo ekologickou krizí a zároveň otevírají intimní, autobiografické i psychologické perspektivy. Vedle dokumentárních a osobních výpovědí zde nacházíme fikci i adaptace kanonických literárních děl.
