Composed in exile in the 1930s and pub­lished as a whole only after his death, the miniatures that make up Benjamin's Berlin Childhood are crystallized images of child­hood experienced in a city later surrendered to fascism. An extraordinary document in the history of photographic criticism. Perhaps more than any other text, A Little History of Photography by the German-Jewish thinker Walter Benjamin has shaped the way in which we understand early photography and the photographic act. One of the first theoretical studies of visual culture, this essay laid the foundation for modern cultural criticism. Instead of regarding the artwork as a unique object, Benjamin emphasized the political and artistic potential of a new technology based on endless reproduction. A Little History of Photography was originally published in the German literary journal Die Literarische Welt in 1931 as three short essays reviewing several books dedicated to early photography. In this text, Benjamin introduced concepts that remain central to critical theory of the medium: the aura, optical unconscious, reproducibility, among other topics. It constitutes a remarkably prescient description of the limits and potentials of photography which remains thought-provoking today.

Hannah Arendtová publikovala v roce 1968 esej s jednoduchým názvem Walter Benjamin (1892–1940). Téhož roku uveřejnila i jeho anglickou verzi jako předmluvu k prvnímu anglickému vydání Benjaminových vybraných spisů, které neslo název Illuminations a o něž se sama výrazně zasloužila. Soubor s názvem Lovení perel uvádí český překlad tohoto eseje a doplňuje jej pěticí Benjaminových drobných prací, které se dosud nedočkaly českého překladu a na něž ve svém eseji upozorňuje i sama autorka. Vybrané texty nepojí žádná systematická souvislost, ale každý z nich se po svém vypořádává s týmž problémem ztráty tradice a navazování nového vztahu k minulosti, ať už z pohledu čtenáře Kafky, očima kritika dobové německé intelektuální produkce, či prizmatem vrtošivého sběratele.

Třetí svazek spisů představuje Waltera Benjamina jako spisovatele, v jehož literárních dílech se zrcadlí a naplňují některé z jeho vůdčích konceptů a idejí. Jádrem svazku je kompletní překlad Jednosměrky, vedle Berlínského dětství kolem roku 1900 výbor obsahuje několik krátkých básnických próz, např. text „Na slunci".

Původ německé truchlohry (tiskem 1928), nejrozsáhlejší souvislý text Waltera Benjamina (1892–1940), podává unikátní výklad barokní jevištní i výtvarné alegorie – a činí tak jazykem plným aluzí, vnitřní dynamiky a neočekávaných obratů, nutících čtenáře nahlédnout hloubku povrchu a umění neumělosti. Walter Benjamin dnes bývá nejčastěji označován za filosofa kultury či teoretika médií; sám se ale možná chápal především jako teolog obrazu a jazyka, teolog, který poznává různá náboženství, ale k žádnému nepatří jednoznačně, a hovoří o božském, ale nekáže je.
