Ví jenom to, že byl vytažen ze svého šťastného domova v Berlíně, převezen do odporného domu uprostřed oplocené pustiny, kde se nemůže ani zabavit. Až se jednoho dne setká se stejně starým chlapcem Šmuelem, který žije podobně vykořeněný život jako Bruno, jenže na druhé straně vysokého plotu.
