Námět k rozsáhlému románu, který u nás vychází poprvé nezkrácený jako jednosvazková kniha, čerpala Charlotte Brontëová z vlastní životní zkušenosti. V roce 1842, v šestadvaceti letech, odcestovala s mladší sestrou Emily z Anglie do Bruselu, kde obě vzdělané ženy našly práci v penzionátu manželů Hégerových. Charlotte učila angličtinu a Emily hudbu. Po několika měsících se sice sestry musely z rodinných důvodů vrátit domů, ale Charlotte brzy přijela zpátky do Belgie a pokračovala v práci v penzionátu. Čekaly ji dva smutné roky: bez Emily se v cizí zemi cítila osamělá, stýskalo se jí po domově a coby protestantka se s katolickým prostředím nikdy nesžila. Posledním impulzem k návratu domů do Haworthu, kde bydlela její rodina, bylo milostné vzplanutí: Charlotte se zamilovala do svého zaměstnavatele, pana Hégera, a protože si uvědomovala, že její láska nikdy nebude opětována a nedojde naplnění, rozhodla se Brusel navždy opustit. Román Villette, pojmenovaný podle "fiktivního města" ve "fiktivní zemi" kdesi v kontinentální Evropě, je do jisté míry autobiografický. Jeho hlavní hrdinka Lucy Snoweová prožívá podobné trable, má podobné sny a touhy, jaké měla v Bruselu Charlotte. Stejně jako autorka věří v ideály a čistou lásku a je připravena svůj život naplnit službou druhým. Příběh Lucy Snoweové, zprvu nemilované a pak obdivované i zbožňované ženy, je mnohovrstevnatý.
