Podivné rány, zoufalé výkřiky a strašidelný smích, které Jana v noci slýchá, rozhodně nejsou jen výplody fantazie.

The Professor

The Professor (1857) was Charlotte Bront's first and least regarded novel, rejected by all publishers during her lifetime and published posthumously by her widower A. B. Nicholls. Charlotte herself defended the novel passionately. "I said to myself that my hero should work his way through life as I had seen real living men work theirs -- that he should never get a shilling he had not earned." Indeed, William Crimsworth, the hero, is the self-made master of all his life's ambiguous fortune, including his career as a professor in Brussels, and his true love. Whatever the comparisons to Charlotte Bront's other, more popular novels, The Professor deserves a closer examination and a new reader perspective.

Complete Novels Bronte Sister

Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte are three of the most remarkable novelists and poets of the ninetieth century.  Jack Hewer illustrates this complete treasury with landscape drawings and the remainder of the illustrations are by B. S. Grieg.   Charlotte was the most prolific of the sisters and best known for Jane Eyre. Anne Bronte was the author of Anges Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. And Emily Bronte’s crowning achievement is Wuthering Heights. Readers will delight in the comprehensive packaging of these classics.

OWC Villette

I am only just returned to a sense of the real world about me, for I have been reading Villette, a still more wonderful book than Jane Eyre.' George Eliot Lucy Snowe, in flight from an unhappy past, leaves England and finds work as a teacher in Madam e Beck's school in 'Villette'. Strongly drawn to the fiery autocratic schoolmaster Monsieur Paul Emanuel, Lucy is compelled by Madame Beck's jealous interference to assert her right to love and be loved. Based in part on Charlotte Bront's experience in Brussels ten years earlier, Villette (1853) is a cogent and dramatic exploration of a woman's response to the challenge of a constricting social environment. Its deployment of imagery comparable in power to that of Emily Bront's Wuthering Height s, and its use of comedyDSironic or exuberantDSin the service of an ultimately sombre vision, make Villette especially appealing to the modern reader.
