Děj slavné alegorické básnické skladby se odehrává o Velikonocích roku 1300, kdy autor zabloudí v lese a dostane se k branám pekla. Se svým průvodcem, antickým básníkem Vergiliem, prochází Dante napřed devíti kruhy pekla a očistcem. Setkává se zde s historickými osobnostmi, které zde musí pykat za své hříchy.
