Vrcholné Dantovo dílo, v němž hlavní hrdina prochází postupně Peklem a Očistcem za doprovodu Vergillia, a následně Rájem, kde je mu průvodkyní jeho zesnulá drahá Beatrice, aby se nakonec navrátil na zemi. Epos se skládá celkem ze stovky zpěvů, první zpěv Pekla je úvodem k celému eposu, dále pak obsahuje každá část třicet tři zpěvů. Celkem má Komedie 14 233 veršů. Zpěvy jsou napsány tercinami, tj. trojveršovými strofami: tercína je druh strofy (neboli sloky) sestávající ze tří deseti-, v případě tzv. ženského zakončení jedenáctislabičných veršů, pocházející z Itálie (poprvé se objevuje právě v Komedii) s důmyslným rýmovým schématem aba-bcb-cdc-ded. Triadická struktura umožňuje výstavbu děje ve schématu teze - antiteze - synteze. Je možné, že trojveršové schéma vzniklo po vzoru Nejsvětější trojice. Po Dantově vzoru jí začali užívat i Petrarca a Boccaccio. Navazuje na provensálský sirventés.

A Commedia címet maga a szerző a következőképpen indokolta: „A komédia a költői elbeszélés egy neme, mely minden egyébtől különbözik; anyagát illetőleg abban különbözik a tragédiától, hogy emez eleinte csodálatos és nyugodt folyású, végén szennyes, borzadalmas; a komédia ellenben valami visszással kezdődik és boldogan végződik. Hasonlóképp különböznek az előadás módjában is: a tragédia magasztos, fenséges hangon szól, a komédia egyszerű, alázatos hangon”.

"Inferno" tells the story "of those who have rejected spiritual values", of those who are lost and are unable to find the right way to salvation. It describes each sin and the corresponding punishment. It differentiates between Purgatory and Hell by presenting people begging for forgiveness and others willing to justify their sins.

Dante 1300 körül elhatározta, hogy világraszóló művet fog írni, olyat, amit akkor már ezer éve nem írtak. És sikerült neki, mert nem tragédiát írt, hanem – ahogy ő nevezte – komédiát. Az Isteni Színjáték azért tud sokszor vicces lenni, mert keserű ember írta. Sziklaszilárdan hitt Istenben, de kénytelen bevallani: Istent úgyse lehet érteni. És – a mi szerencsénkre – tett egy nagy felfedezést: nem Istent kell megérteni, hanem az embereket, Isten teremtményeit. Talán őket figyelve megtudjuk, milyen Ő. Nádasdy Ádám fordításában önálló kötetben is olvasható az Isteni Színjáték legizgalmasabb része, a Pokol, jegyzetekkel és utószóval.
