11. října sleduje show televizní hvězdy Jasona Tavernera na třicet milionů diváků v hlavním vysílacím čase. 12. října už není Jason Taverner někdo, ale stává se dokonce neosobou. Kniha je dle recenzentů Dickovým nejpolitičtějším románem. Ve srovnání s jinými je psán lineárně a komponován mnohem přehledněji. Protože děj se odehrává v roce 1988, zdál se kalifornským úřadům až příliš provokativní. Dickovi za jeho nepřítomnosti dokonce prohledali byt - rukopis byl naštěstí v péči jednoho notáře.
