Nejznámější román slavné anglické spisovatelky 19. století Elizabeth Gaskellové Cranford byl poprvé vydáván na pokračování v anglickém časopise Household Words, vedeném Charlesem Dickensem, v roce 1851. Nyní k Vám vůbec poprvé míří v českém překladu. Fiktivní městečko Cranford vykreslila autorka podle Knutsfordu v hrabství Cheshire, kde strávila podstatnou část svého dětství. Děj románu je vlastně sledem rozmarných epizod ze života Mary Smithové a jejích přítelkyň, staropanenských sester Matty a Deborah Jenkynsových. Scéna je zalidněna humorně pojatými postavami - jmenujme jen Betty Barkerovou, která miluje svou krávu, jako by to byla její dcera, ctihodnou, avšak letargickou paní Jamiesonovou, Thomase Holbrooka, ctitele slečny Matty, který zemře teprve rok po své cestě do Paříže, což však veřejnému mínění nebrání v tom, aby v ní vidělo příčinu jeho skonu, pochybného komorníka paní Jamiesonové pana Mullinera, potulného kouzelníka Signora Brunoniho či Petera Jenkynse, již dávno oplakanéh o bratra slečen Jenkynsových, jehož návrat z Indie obrátí městečko vzhůru nohama. Cranford není jen knihou, kterou si oblíbily již nespočetné generace, ale také vděčným námětem pro filmové a televizní zpracování - například výborně obsazené seriály B BC Cranford a Návrat do Cranfordu byly v roce 2010 odvysílány Českou televizí. This is the story of a small town in the north west of England during the 1840s and of kindness and friendliness between neighbours, but most of all, it is about the ladies of Cranford. Patrick Bront Elizabeth Gaskell's The Life of Charlotte Bront (1857) is a pioneering biography of one great Victorian woman novelist by another. Gaskell was a friend of Charlotte Bront, and, having been invited to write the offical life, determined both to tell the truth and to honour her friend. She contacted those who had known Charlotte and travelled extensively in England and Belgium to gather material. She wrote from a vivid accumulation of letters, interviews, and observation, establishing the details of Charlotte's life and recreating her background.
