Odysseia navazuje na předchozí Homérův epos Ilias. Ithacký král Odysseus se zde vrací z trojské války domů, po cestě však rozhněvá boha Poseidona, který mu pak strojí nejrůznější překážky a útrapy, takže plavba zpět se protáhne na mnoho let. Odysseus všechny nástrahy překoná a po dlouhé době konečně spatří kouř z Ithaky, kde na něj čeká věrná Penelopa. Vše končí v Odysseově paláci – tam dojde k dramatickému rozuzlení. Hrdiny jsou tu lidé jednoznačně dobří nebo zlí: první jsou předurčeni k vítězství, druhým není pomoci. Do hlavního proudu děje jsou mistrně vpleteny pohádkové příběhy z cizokrajných zemí za devatero moři a devatero ostrovy… Mimořádně poutavý příběh je vyprávěn s velkým citem pro krásu výrazu a pro dramatický účinek – právě proto s námi Homérovo vyprávění žije už téměř tři tisíce let.
