O autorovi Iliady a Odysseie nic nevíme, a přesto zůstává jméno Homér ve světové literatuře jedním z nejznámějších a příběhy jeho dvou eposů inspirovaly a stále inspirují nespočetnou řadu literátů a umělců. Odysseia líčí dramatický, deset let trvající návrat jednoho z účastníků dobývání Tróje, ithackého krále Odyssea, domů, na rodný ostrov.
