Příběh o bývalém galejníkovi, který zbohatne a přitom pomáhá chudým, zní tak trochu jako pohádka. Méně pohádkový je jeho boj s vyděrači, podvodníky nebo policistou, který Jeana Valjeana stíhá. K nejkrásnějším stránkám Bídníků patří příběh čisté lásky Maria a Cosetty, do něhož Hugo vložil vlastní zážitky z milostného vztahu k herečce Julii Drouetové. Kniha měla oslňující úspěch už při svém prvním vydání v r. 1862, vyšla v nesčetných vydáních, byla mnohokrát zfilmována a v posledních letech se stala i předlohou k úspěšnému muzikálu.

Francouzského autora 19. století Victora Huga si obvykle spojujeme s rozsáhlými díly prozaickými, a tím o to větším překvapením je jeho tvorba básnická. A překvapením vskutku příjemným, vždyť Hugovy verše zvou čtenáře do intimního, romantického světa tohoto velkého spisovatele a ukazují další jeho tvůrčí stránku.

Many of the characters are well-known: Valjean, the criminal trying to escape his reputation, Javert, the police agent trailing him, the unfortunate Fantine and her daughter, Cosette, the rascally Thenardier, and, above all the splendid street urchin, Gavroche. Among the unforgettable descriptions are those of the Paris sewers, the battle of Waterloo and the fighting at the barricades during the July Revolution. There are few more complete, or more vivid, pictures of France at the beginning of the nineteenth century. C'est un tel classique qu'on a toujours l'impression de l'avoir déj lu... ou vu : avec Michel Bouquet dans le rôle de Javert, ou bien Depardieu. Relire donc Les Misérables, publié par Victor Hugo en 1862, offre le plaisir de la reconnaissance et du recommencement. Toujours on sera emporté par la tension romanesque du livre, ses figures inoubliables, ses langues multiples - n'oublions pas que Hugo est le premier introduire l'argot et la langue populaire dans le français écrit -, ses histoires et son temps. De la récidive malheureuse de Jean Valjean, frais libéré du bagne, sa progressive rédemption, de l'enfance désastreuse de Cosette son idylle avec Marius, de la figure sacrificielle de Fantine aux personnages sinistres de Thénardier et de Javert, le roman propose une belle leçon d'humanité vivante. Je viens détruire la fatalité humaine, écrit Hugo, je condamne l'esclavage, je chasse la misre, j'enseigne l'ignorance, je traite la maladie, j'éclaire la nuit, je hais la haine. Jean Valjean, un homme qui vient de passer dix-neuf ans au bagne, arrive Digne o il est reçu par l'évque Myriel. Pendant la nuit, il lui vole des couverts en argent puis s'échappe.
