První kniha Jamese Joyce Dubliňané vyšla až roku 1914, přestože tyto povídky vznikly v letech 1904 až 1907. Joyce totiž musel svádět bitvu s nakladateli, kteří měli námitky zejména k otevřenosti, s jakou přistupoval k dané tematice, dále ke zvolenému jazyku, který novátorsky zrcadlil mluvu obyčejných Irů, a k námětům, tehdy často dosud tabuizovaným či pokrytecky skrývaným. Čtenářům se tak nakonec dostala do rukou kniha, ve které se autor snažil pravdivě zobrazit soudobé Irsko, především Dublin. V patnácti povídkách představil město období přelomu 19. a 20. století až do topografických podrobností a jeho obyvatele nastínil v celé škále psychologicky hodnověrných postav a postaviček svých příběhů. Joyceovi Dubliňané patří k vrcholným dílům moderní prózy. Na rozdíl od olbřímího románu Odysseus se v nich autor nepokouší o žádný stylistický experiment zobrazující bezmála celý svět, nýbrž v patnácti povídkách "jen" minimalisticky popisuje a analyzuje své bližní, příslušníky dublinské střední třídy z počátku 20. století.
