Romové na území dnešní České republiky se prostřednictvím psaného slova vyjadřují zhruba od konce 60. let 20. století. Počátky jejich písemnictví byly motivované snahou prokázat svou rovnocennost s okolní společností a charakterizovala je obrozenská témata formující společnou paměť a vědomí romské pospolitosti. Tvorbu Ireny Eliášové a Ivety Kokyové přinášíme v dvojjazyčném česko-romském provedení. Úměrně k tomu, jak romština coby primární komunikační kód mezi českými Romy ustupuje, narůstá její prestiž v tomto literárním poli. Obě autorky se k ní přiklonily pod vlivem starších autorů, kteří romské literatuře odvážně klestili cestu.
