Állatfarm
Orwell 1943-44-ben írott műve - amelynek a szerző a "Tündérmese" alcímet adta - ténylegesen a sztálini korszak szatírája, a Lenin halálától a szovjet-német megnemtámadási egyezményig terjedő időszakban, de természetesen minden elnyomó, totalitárius rendszerre ráillik. Egy angol farm - Mr. Jones "Major"-ja - a színhely, ahol az állatok a disznók vezetésével megdöntik az Ember uralmát, és a maguk igazgatta "Állatfarm"-on élik először szabadnak, derűsnek látszó, majd egyre jobban elkomoruló életüket.
Az 1984 írójának már ebben a művében is nagy szerepet játszik a történelmi dokumentumok meghamisításának motívuma. Visszamenőlegesen megváltoznak, majd feledésbe merülnek az állatok hajdani ideológusának, az Őrnagynak eszméi, a Napóleon nevű nagy kan ragadja magához a hatalmat, és - természetesen mindig a megfelelő ideológiai magyarázattal - egyre zordabb diktatúrát kényszerít állattársaira.
A kezdeti jelszó pedig - "Minden állat egyenlő" - érdekesen módosul...

S bár sok mindent be tudunk helyettesíteni a történelem valós alakjaival, eszméivel, intézményeivel, ebben a regényben mégis az írói fantázia a leglenyűgözőbb; 1948-ban, betegen, kiábrándultan Orwell olyan regényvilágot alkotott, amely borzongató realitásával rabul ejti az olvasót akkor is, ha közben könnyedén - talán túlságosan is könnyedén - azt mondja: Orwell jóslata, hála istennek, nem teljesedett be.

Na jednu stranu Orwell uplatňuje nesmiřitelný postoj levicového politického komentátora, který analyzuje soudobou anglickou společnost, nemilosrdně tepe sociální nerovnost a odhaluje ideologické pokrytectví. V jiné poloze však uplatňuje smysl pro detaily, jichž si všímá v životě lidí vnímaných jako individuality, nikoli jen bezejmenná masa tvořící dohromady množinu anglického národa či španělských republikánů. Popisuje-li „obyčejné“, anonymní aktéry dějinných událostí, vnímá je, i pokud stojí na opačné straně barikády, především jako lidské jedince, již mají v jeho očích všichni stejný nárok na štěstí, natož na samotný život. Jak říká v titulní eseji „Ohlédnutí za španělskou válkou“: „…Přišel jsem zastřelit „fašistu“, ale člověk, který si přidržuje kalhoty, není „fašista“, je to očividně blízký tvor, stejný jako vy, a vám se nechce ho zastřelit.“

Kniha Georga Orwella Hold Katalánsku, v ktorej opisuje vlastné skúsenosti a zážitky zo španielskej občianskej vojny, zaujíma v jeho živote a myšlienkovom vývoji výnimočné miesto. Do Španielska totižto šiel preto, aby na vlastnej koži zažil autentický socializmus, ktorý pre obrovskú väčšinu ľudí znamená beztriednu spoločnosť, alebo neznamená vôbec nič.
Orwell hneď po príchode do Španielska vstúpil do milície POUM, trockistickej frakcie robotnícko-roľníckeho bloku, a tým bol jeho osud, ako aj osud ostatných členov strany, spečatený. PSUC, strana komunistickej III. Internacionály, si totižto osobovala právo zlikvidovať všetkých, ktorí s ňou nesúhlasili. Totižto kým POUM považovali boj proti Francovi a fašizmu za súčasť politickej a sociálnej revolúcie, zatiaľ PSUC nespojovali porazenie Franca so sociálnou a politickou revolúciou. Tento fakt bol v občianskej vojne pre Orwella deprimujúci. Na vlastné oči videl, ako si komunisti vymýšľajú proti svojim ideologickým odporcom tie najkrkolomnejšie obvinenia a ako sa všetkými prostriedkami usilujú o ich vyvraždenie, ako samoúčelne prekrúcajú fakty a nezakryte nimi manipulujú. A bezprostredne videl a zažil aj konkrétnu formu stalinských metód, a nezákonné praktiky, ktoré boli riadené odkiaľsi zo zákulisia. Videl a zažil, ako čestných, zodpovedných a obetavých bojovníkov v radoch rôznych politických zoskupení prenasledovali, diskreditovali, mučili, väznili a bezohľadne vraždili.
O čo teda šlo v občianskej vojne v Španielsku na strane vládnych zoskupení? Podľa Orwellových slov: „Bolo to nepriateľstvo medzi tými, ktorí si želali pokračovať v revolúcii a tými, ktorí revolúciu chceli zastaviť, či zabrániť jej. V konečnom dôsledku šlo o konflikt medzi anarchistami a komunistami.“
Okrem verného zachytenia procesu ovládnutia španielskych mocenských orgánov sovietskymi „poradcami“ Orwell identifikoval aj iracionalizmus totalitarizmu a odkryl jeho mrazivé klamstvo. Jedným z jeho základných vlastností je manipulácia s vedomím ľudí či prepieranie mozgov, v čom nezanedbateľnú úlohu zohrávajú masmédiá, pričom je úplne jedno, či sú ľavicové alebo pravicové. Podľa Orwella „Jedna z najhorších skúseností, akú som v tejto vojne získal, je to, že ľavicová tlač je práve taká falošná a nečestná, ako tlač pravicová.“
Fakt cynického manipulovania s vedomím ľudí či prepierania mozgov, túto „epidémiu“ si Orwell bolestivo uvedomoval. A keďže sa tento jav vyskytuje na oboch stranách barikády, patrí medzi prvých, ktorý sa pokúšal upozorňovať na podstatnú podobnosť medzi fašizmom a komunizmom. A dokonca vystríhať pred tým, že človek nemôže byť antifašistom, ak zároveň nie je proti totalitarizmu.

V této podobě se bude jednat o nejúplnější, nejširší a naprosto vyčerpávající souhrn Orwellových esejí v češtině.
