Orwellův psychologicko-společenský román, kritizující mamon a nadvládu peněz v meziválečné anglické společnosti. Gordon Comstock je mladý spisovatel, který pohrdá „bohem peněz“ a jeho nadvládou nad celou meziválečnou anglickou společností. Odmítne proto práci v reklamní agentuře a nechá se zaměstnat v malém knihkupectví. Výsledkem je však pocit, že jím jeho dívka Rosemary pohrdá právě proto, že se vzdal světských statků. Bože chraň aspidistru je psychologicko-společenský román, v němž Orwell trefně vykresluje tápání mladého, zmateného idealisty ve společnosti hnané touhou po zisku. Se suchým humorem popisuje pošetilé chování svých hrdinů, zároveň však odmítá poskytovat jednoduché odpovědi na jejich složitá osobní dilemata.

Egy angol farm - Mr. Jones "Major"-ja - a színhely, ahol az állatok a disznók vezetésével megdöntik az Ember uralmát, és a maguk igazgatta "Állatfarm"-on élik először szabadnak, derűsnek látszó, majd egyre jobban elkomoruló életüket.##

Aby poznal život chudých z první ruky, vydával se George Orwell na výpravy do chudých městských čtvrtí, nejprve v Londýně a později i v Paříži. Oblékal se jako nuzák, aby mezi místní lépe zapadl, protloukal se jen s minimem peněz, přespával v zavšivených ubytovnách, pracoval jako myč nádobí. S tím, jak chudí žijí a umírají, se seznámil bezprostředně též v jedné pařížské nemocnici, když na svých toulkách onemocněl. Orwellova sociologická reportáž dodnes slouží díky své upřímnosti a procítěnosti jako protipól všech suchých statistik o nezaměstnanosti, chudobě a bídě.
