Snow (Turkish: Kar) is a novel by Turkish author Orhan Pamuk. It was published in Turkish in 2002 and in English (translated by Maureen Freely) in 2004. The story encapsulates many of the political and cultural tensions of modern Turkey and successfully combines humor, social commentary, mysticism, and a deep sympathy with its characters. Kar is the word for Snow, but the main character also abbreviates his name to Ka (his initials) with the novel set in the eastern Turkish city of Kars. An opening (and recurring) theme concerns reasons behind a suicide epidemic among teenage girls (which actually took place in the city of Batman ).

Román najvýznamnejšieho, vo svete najprekladanejšieho autora postmoderny v tureckej literatúre je románom o hľadaní. Hlavný predstaviteľ si prečíta Knihu, a tá sa mu stáva impulzom k hľadaniu nového sveta a nového života v ňom. Vydáva sa na cestu, ktorá sa nikdy nekončí. Hoci si názov pre svoj román požičal Pamuk od Danteho, putovanie jeho hrdinu je alúziou na cestu islamských mysliteľov-sufiov k Pravde, to značí k Bohu ako absolútnu, k splynutiu s ním. V románe sa opakujú motívy a obrazy (Kniha, svetlo, cesta, anjel, smrť), s ktorými sa autor ustavične pohráva a strieda svoj pohľad na ne. Knihu preložila Xénia Celnarová.

Dej románu sa odohráva v priebehu desiatich dní roku 1591 v zasneženom Istanbule. Román má kriminálnu zápletku. Ako prvý z radu rozprávačov, medzi ktorých okrem živých ľudí patria aj obrazy a červená farba, sa o slovo hlási zavraždený.

Orhan Pamuk (1952) patří k nejvýznamnějším představitelům současné turecké literatury, jeho dílo se ale setkává s velkým ohlasem i daleko za hranicemi Turecka. Obdržel řadu ocenění, k nimž na podzim roku 2006 přibyla i Nobelova cena za literaturu. Také román Nový život se stal literární událostí ve všech zemích, kde vyšel. Vypravěčem tohoto monumentálního postmoderního příběhu o hledání smyslu života, velké lásky a smrti je mladý student, jenž se vydává na mysteriózní cestu napříč Anatólií a snaží se nalézt nový život, který mu přislíbila záhadná kniha. Naráží na řadu znamení, která zdánlivě vedou k vysněnému cíli, a stále hlouběji se noří do vzpomínek na své dětství.

The novel depicts a panoramic view of life in Istanbul as it chronicles this long, obsessive, love affair between Kemal and Fusun; and Pamuk beautifully captures the identity crisis experienced by Istanbul's upper classes who find themselves caught between traditional and westernised ways of being. For the past ten years, Pamuk has been setting up a museum in the house in which his hero's fictional family lived, to display Kemal's strange collection of objects associated with Fusun and their relationship. The museum will be called The Museum of Innocence and it opens in 2010.

Na jaře 1975 se Kemal, třicetiletý syn bohaté istanbulské rodiny, chystá zasnoubit se Sibel a žít bezstarostným životem. Těsně před zásnubami však potká mladičkou Füsun, svou vzdálenou příbuznou, a ta se stane jeho osudovou láskou. Přesto se zasnoubí se Sibel. Svou tragickou chybu si uvědomí příliš pozdě: zhrzená Füsun ho opouští a Kemalovi se hroutí svět. Aby přežil, tvoří si soukromé „muzeum nevinnosti“, jež léta posedle plní stovkami předmětů dokumentujících jeho vztah s Füsun – exponáty prodchnutými zrovna tak tíživými vzpomínkami na ztracenou lásku jako nekonečnou melancholií Istanbulu.
