Autor sa narodil roku 1904 v poľskom Radzymine v rodine rabína. Spočiatku sa zdalo, že bude pokračovať v rodinnej tradícii, čoskoro však dal prednosť svetskej literatúre. Najprv sa pokúšal písať hebrejskú poéziu, no onedlho presedlal na prózu v jidiš , ktorej ostal verný po celý život. Prvá kniha - román Shoten an Goray (Satan v Goraji) - mu vyšla roku 1935. Tesne pred jej vydaním I. B. Singer v predtuche blížiacej sa katastrofy emigroval do USA. Až do konca života (umrel roku 1991 v Miami na Flo ride) bol neobyčajne produktívnym a úspešným autorom. Vydal trinásť románov a viacero kníh pre deti. Roku 1978 získal Nobelovu cenu. Spoločným znakom obľúbených poviedok situovaných do židovských komunít na poľskom vidieku, do varšavských bohémskych kruhov alebo emigrantských komunít v Amerike je rozprávačské majstrovstvo, v ktorom sa snúbi tajomno so zmyslom pre realistický detail, citlivosť s láskavým humorom bez irónie a odsúdenia, zmyselnosť s filozo fickou hĺbkou. Příběh dobrodruha Maxe Barabandera, který se po smrti svého syna vydává z Argentiny do rodného Polska. Doufá v rozptýlení a zapomenutí, ale také v jakýsi nový začátek po dvouletém období problémů s potencí. Ve Varšavě naváže kontakty nejen s rodinou zbožného rabína, ale hlavně s místním podsvětím, a pomoc hledá i u známého spiritisty. Max se stále více zaplétá, sklouzává hlouběji a hlouběji. Svůj postupný pád i jeho nevyhnutelné následky si jasně uvědomuje ovšem k tomu, aby se postavil vlastním špatným sklonům i pokušením, jimž ho vystavuje okolí, se mu však nedostává mravní síly.

Pokračování románu Panství dovádí historii rozvětveného Jakobiho rodu až do posledních let 19. století, kdy se přerod židovské komunity, vymaňující se z feudálních tradic, završí všeobecným společenským kvasem a rozčarováním moderní doby. I zde autor na pozadí osudů velké polské židovské rodiny sleduje nejen vzestup a emancipaci místní židovské komunity, ale stejně tak celého Polska.

The pogrom that swept through Poland was interpreted as a sign of the Coming of the Lord. In the little town of Goray, laid waste by murder and famine, grief becomes joy as good news arrives of the second coming of the Messiah. Once the town's pious rabbi is usurped, the townspeople are free to look forward to the End of Days, when they will wear golden jackets and dine on marzipan candy. But such perilously high hopes pave the way to hysteria, and a panic which could threaten the very existence of Goray.
