Im ländlichen englischen Gasthaus „Admiral Benbow“ in der Nähe von Bristol quartiert sich ein alter Seemann ein, William „Bill“ Bones. Jim Hawkins, der Ich-Erzähler des Romans und Sohn des Gastwirtspaares, hält für den trunksüchtigen Bones Ausschau nach einem Einbeinigen, den dieser offenbar fürchtet. Jim Hawkins zeigt die Karte seinem väterlichen Freund, dem Arzt Doktor Livesey, und dem Gutsherrn und Friedensrichter John Trelawney, die daraufhin beschließen, eine Expedition zu jener Insel zu unternehmen. Jim soll als Schiffsjunge ebenfalls mitreisen. Als Expeditionsschiff dient die Hispaniola unter Kapitän Smollett. Später stellt sich heraus, dass man, ohne es zu ahnen, auch einige Mitglieder von Captain Flints ehemaliger Piraten-Crew mit angeheuert hat, allen voran den einbeinigen Schiffskoch Long John Silver. 

Jim Hawkins es el hijo del dueño de una posada llamada “Almirante Benbow”, a la que un día acude para alojarse un hombre muy peculiar que canta tonadillas marineras y se hace llamar capitán. Este señor le pide a Jim que le avise si se acerca un hombre con una sola pierna. A cambio de vigilar, el hombre le da una paga cada mes. Pero Jim no ve a ningún hombre con una sola pierna, sino que fue un hombre seboso el primero que se acercó a la posada preguntando por él. Más tarde un ciego llamado Pew pregunta por el capitán, que al parecer se llama Billy Bones. Billy muere a causa de un ataque de apoplejía poco después de que el doctor le salve la vida una vez por la misma causa de su muerte. Jim descubre que el capitán era un bucanero y los otros dos lo buscaban. El y su madre abren su baúl y encuentran un fajo de papeles y dinero de muchos países. An old sailor named Billy Bones comes to lodge in the rural Admiral Benbow Inn on the West English coast. A former shipmate, Black Dog, confronts Bones and engages in a violent fight with him. After Black Dog is run off, a blind beggar named Pew visits to give Bones "the black spot" as a summons to share a map leading to buried treasure. Shortly thereafter, Bones suffers a stroke and dies. Pew and his accomplices attack the inn, but Jim and his mother save themselves while taking Bones's sea chest. Inside the chest, they find a map of an island on which the infamous pirate Captain Flint hid his treasure. Jim shows the map to the local physician Dr. Livesey and the district squire John Trelawney, and they decide to make an expedition to the island, with Jim serving as a cabin boy. They set sail on Trelawney's schooner, the Hispaniola, under Captain Smollett. Much of the crew, as it is later revealed, are pirates who served under Captain Flint, most notable of which is the ship's one-legged chef "Long John" Silver.

Robert Louis Stevenson, autor známych diel Ostrov pokladov či Podivný prípad doktora Jekylla a pána Hyda, bol väčšinu svojho života vášnivým cestovateľom. Ani jeho podlomené zdravie ho nemohlo odradiť od tejto záľuby, naopak ho prinútilo zmeniť prostredie a navštíviť miesta ako Francúzska Riviéra alebo Tichý oceán, keď dúfal, že sa vylieči z tuberkulózy. Na lodi precestoval celú Európu a nespočetné množstvo ostrovov, pričom jeho výpravy neraz trvali aj niekoľko mesiacov. Príhody a zápisky z ciest mu boli inšpiráciou pri tvorbe diel ako Putovanie s oslom do hôr (1879) a Do Južných morí (1896). Stevenson a jeho rodina si v San Francisku v roku 1888 prenajali loď – škuner Casco a vydali sa na výpravu Tichým oceánom. Zdravý morský vzduch bol odporúčaný na zlepšenie zdravotného stavu a zároveň to bola jedinečná príležitosť precestovať túto časť sveta. Stevenson strávil určitý čas na ostrovoch Hawai, kde sa spriatelil s tamojším kráľom, aby následne vyrazil smerom na ostrovy Tahiti, Nový Zéland a súostrovie Samoa. Oboplával Austráliu navštívil aj tak vzdialené ostrovy, akými sú Kiribati alebo Apemama. Počas svojej cesty pokračoval vo svojej tvorbe a pracoval na svojom diele s názvom Diabol vo fľaši (1891), ktoré bolo jedným z najúspešnejších príbehov z prostredia kaštieľa na ostrovoch Hawai, kolónie lepry na ostrove Molokai a ďalších miest ktoré na svojej ceste navštívil. V knihe Do Južných morí autor opísal svoje zážitky z plavby po Tichom oceáne, stretnutia s miestnymi obyvateľmi, tradície a zvyky, s ktorými prišiel do kontaktu a príbehy, ktoré si vypočul. Toto prostredie mu učarovalo natoľko, že sa tu rozhodol stráviť zvyšok svôjho života a usadil sa vo vile na ostrove Samoa. Stal sa tak verejne známou osobnosťou a získal si dôveru miestnych autorít. Svoje posledné chvíle strávil na tomto ostrove a pochovaný bol v roku 1894 v oblasti Mount Vaea, kde sa nachádza aj jeho pomník. Na dielo Do Južných morí nadväzuje ďalšie s názvom Plavba na parníku Janet Nichol Južnými moriami ( 1914 ).

A nameless Scottish soldier is recovering from his wounds in a Spanish hospital. He takes a temporary residence with a local family. Felipe and Olalla are two siblings living with their mother, with whom the soldier develops a casual friendship. After being absent for a while, Olalla returns to the house and the Scotsman immediately falls in love with her.

Fettes and his friends meet for a drink at the local inn. Everything is going well until the famous doctor Wolfe Macfarlane enters to treat a sick patient. Fettes gets very upset when he sees Macfarlane and a conflict arises between the two former medical students. The encounters brings back bitter memories of the bad, past decisions and crimes which they have committed as students.
