The War of the Worlds
No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied. Yet across the gulf of space, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us.
Then, late one night, in the middle of the English countryside, they landed.

Stroj času, Neviditeľný a iné. Po prvej svetovej vojne napísal monumentálne trojzväzkové dejiny Náčrt histórie sveta v rozsahu 1 324 strán, z ktorých vytvoril kratšiu verziu pod názvom Stručné dejiny sveta. Tie vyšli roku 1922 a predstavujú podrobný a detailný opis fyzického, duchovného a intelektuálneho vývinu ľudstva a zaznamenávajú kľúčové udalosti celej histórie sveta. Týmto svojím úžasným myšlienkovým počinom osvetľuje kontinuitu dejín a provokuje čitateľov, aby rozmýšľali o dôsledkoch budúceho vývinu spoločnosti založenom na vtedajšom vedeckom a intelektuálnom poznaní.
The Island of Doctor Moreau
HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics.
"That these man-like creatures were in truth only bestial monsters, mere grotesque travesties of men, filled me with a vague uncertainty of their possibilities far worse than any definite fear."
Edward Prendick, the sole survivor of a shipwreck in the South Pacific, is set ashore on an island where he meets the mysterious Doctor Moreau. Horrified by the discovery that Moreau is performing vivisection on animals to form monstrous human hybrids, Prendick flees into the jungle. But he soon realises that the island is populated with Moreau's terrible creations, and not all are divested of their savage habits . . .
H. G. Wells pioneered ideas of society, science and progress in his works, which are now considered modern classics. Written in 1896, The Island of Doctor Moreau is an imaginative exploration of the nature of cruelty and what it means to be human.

The Invisible Man
HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics.
"I beheld, unclouded by doubt, a magnificent vision of all that invisibility might mean to a man - the mystery, the power, the freedom."
Griffin, a stranger, arrives at the local inn of an English village, entirely shrouded in bandages. Forbidding and unfriendly, he confines himself to his room. Driven away by the villagers and turning to an old friend for help, Griffin reveals that he has discovered how to make himself invisible, and plans to use his condition for treacherous ends. But when his friend refuses to join his quest, Griffin turns murderous, threatening to seek revenge on all who have betrayed him.
H. G. Wells' controversial works are considered modern classics of the science fiction genre. Originally serialised in 1897, The Invisible Man is a fascinating exploration of power, corruption and science.

Dr. Moreau szigete

A „Világok harcá”-ban Wells a marslakók és a földi emberek közötti háborút írja le, megalkotva ezzel a műfaj egyik legsikeresebb, hallatlanul izgalmas, végig feszültséggel teli alapművét. E szuggesztív hatású könyvből készült – híres-hírhedt – Orson Welles rádiójáték képes volt igazi tömeghisztériát előidéző pánikhangulatot okozni az Egyesült Államokban. A kötet e rádiójáték teljes szövegét is tartalmazza.

The War of the Worlds
The War of the Worlds (1898), by H. G. Wells, is an early science fiction novel which describes an invasion of England by aliens from Mars. It is one of the earliest and best-known depictions of an alien invasion of Earth, and has influenced many others, as well as spawning several films, radio dramas, comic book adaptations, and a television series based on the story. The 1938 radio broadcast caused public outcry against the episode, as many listeners believed that an actual Martian invasion was in progress, a notable example of mass hysteria.

The World Set Free
THE WORLD SET FREE was written in 1913 and published early in 1914, and it is the latest of a series of three fantasias of possibility, stories which all turn on the possible developments in the future of some contemporary force or group of forces. The World Set Free was written under the immediate shadow of the Great War. Every intelligent person in the world felt that disaster was impending and knew no way of averting it, but few of us realised in the earlier half of 1914 how near the crash was to us. The reader will be amused to find that here it is put off until the year 1956.Noteworthy for its depiction of fictional ''atomic bombs'' which eerily prefigure the development of real nuclear weapons.
