Herbert George Wells, anglický prozaik konca 19. a pr­vej polovice 20. storočia, bol autor obľúbených science-fiction románov a viacerých náučno-populárnych kníh pre širokú verejnosť, ktorý sa vyjadroval k mnohým aktuálnym politickým témam. Medzi jeho najvýznam­nejšie diela patria romány Vojna svetov. Stroj času, Nevi­diteľný a iné. Po prvej svetovej vojne napísal monumen­tálne trojzväzkové dejiny Náčrt histórie sveta v rozsahu 1 324 strán, z ktorých vytvoril kratšiu verziu pod ná­zvom Stručné dejiny sveta. Tie vyšli roku 1922 a pred­stavujú podrobný a detailný opis fyzického, duchovné­ho a intelektuálneho vývinu ľudstva a zaznamenávajú kľúčové udalosti celej histórie sveta.
