Virginia Woolf
Významná anglická spisovateľka a esejistka Virginia Woolfová, vlastným menom Adeline Virginia Stephenová, sa narodila 25. januára 1882 v Lodnýne. Vyrastala v početnej rodine, vzdelávala sa doma najmä čítaním kníh z bohatej otcovej knižnice. Nikdy nezažila detskú spoločnosť v škole, s jej slangom, vulgarizmami a žiarlivosťou, napísala neskôr.

Inšpiroval ju k napísaniu románu K majáku (To the lighthouse), ktorý prvýkrát vyšiel v roku 1927.
Jej romány Jakubova izba (Jacob's room, 1922), Pani Dallowayová (Mrs. Dalloway, 1925), The waves (Vlny, 1931) alebo The years (Roky, 1937) predstavujú experimentálny prístup k písaniu a k románovej forme. Rozbila v nich jednotu času a vo veľkej miere využívala metódu voľného zachytávania prúdu vedomia, čím minimalizovala úlohu autora ako rozprávača a komentátora. Patrila k hlavným predstaviteľom expresionizmu a subjektivizmu vo svetovej literatúre.
Citlivá a emotívna Virginia Woolfová spáchala samovraždu utopením 28. marca 1941 v období hlbokej depresie, do ktorej ju okrem narušeného zdravia priviedli aj okolnosti druhej svetovej vojny. Zomrela vo veku 59 rokov.
V roku 2000 preložil spisovateľ Pavel Vilikovský román Vlastná izba (A room of one's own, 1929) od Virginie Woolfovej a získal Cenu Jána Hollého za najlepší preklad prozaického diela v roku 2000.

A világítótorony

The Waves

I, who would wish to feel close over me the protective waves of the ordinary, catch with the tail of my eye some far horizon.' Intensely visionary yet absorbed with the everyday; experimental, daring and challenging, The Waves is regarded by many as Virginia Woolf's greatest achievement. It follows a set of six friends from childhood to middle age as they experience the world around them and explore who they are and what it means to be alive. As the contours of their lives are revealed, a unique novel is slowly unveiled. Enfolded within Woolf's lyrical and mysterious language, the mundane takes on a startling new significance while distant pasts are no less in play than the clamorous sounds and kaleidoscopic sights of the modern city. Yet precisely where the alluringly enigmatic pages of The Waves are leading, and what deeper meanings are held within its undulant chapters and shimmering interludes, are questions that have never ceased to enthral readers and critics alike. In this new e dition David Bradshaw considers the spellbinding oddness and originality of The Waves, helping the reader to negotiate a way though this most poetic and haunting of novels. Mrs Dalloway

Elegantly interweaving her characters' complex inner lives in an unbroken stream of consciousness, Virginia Woolf's "Mrs Dalloway" continues to enthral readers with its exploration of the human experience; of time, space, madness and regret. This "Penguin Classics" edition is edited by Stella McNichol with an introduction and notes by Elaine Showalter. Past, present and future are brought together one momentous June day in 1923. Clarissa Dalloway, elegant and vivacious, is preparing for a party while reminiscing about her childhood romance with Peter Walsh, and dwelling on her daughter Elizabeth's rapidly-approaching adulthood. In another part of London, war veteran Septimus Smith is shell-shocked and on the brink of madness, slowly spiralling towards self-annihilation. Their experiences mingling, yet never quite meeting, Virginia Woolf masterfully portrays a serendipitous unity of inner lives, converging as the party reaches its glittering climax. Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is regarded as a major 20th century author and essayist, a key figure in literary history as a feminist and modernist, and the centre of "The Bloomsbury Group". This informal collective of artists and writers which included Lytton Strachey and Roger Fry, exerted a powerful influence over early twentieth-century British culture. Between 1925 and 1931 Virginia Woolf produced what are now regarded as her finest masterpieces, from "Mrs Dalloway" (1925) to the poetic and highly experimental novel "The Waves" (1931). She also maintained an astonishing output of literary criticism, short fiction, journalism and biography, including the playfully subversive "Orlando" (1928) and "A Room of One's Own" (1929) a passionate feminist essay. If you enjoyed "Mrs Dalloway", you might like James Joyce's "Ulysses", also available in "Penguin Classics". "The book's celebrated stream of consciousness is one of the few genuine innovations in the history of the novel." ("New Yorker").

Orlando

Jacobs Room (Collins Classics)

HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics. JACOB'S ROOM, Virginia Woolf's third novel, marks her first foray into Modernist experimentation. The narrative traces Jacob's childhood in Cornwall and his education at Cambridge, culminating in an evocative portrait of his adult life in London and abroad. Jacob is romantically torn between the artistic Florinda, the upper-middle-class Clara Durrant and the beautiful, but married, Sandra Wentworth Williams. This tissue of romance, though, is torn apart by the cataclysmic events of the First World War. Woolf poignantly depicts the life of Jacob through a sequence of alternating perspectives that combine letters, fragments of dialogue and the ephemeral impressions of those nearest to him. Jacob's voice becomes the absent centre of one of Modernism's first great novels.

Ennek ellenére Woolf könyve nemcsak irodalomtörténeti csemege, hanem a mai napig friss és elgondolkoztató írás - nemcsak nők, hanem férfiak számára is.

Nejen to ale může čtenáře překvapit. V průběhu románu Orlando změní pohlaví a je z něho manželka a matka. Dvojjazyčné zpracování románu pomůže ve zdokonalení jazykových znalostí angličtiny. To the Lighthouse

'The Lighthouse was then a silvery, misty-looking tower with a yellow eye that opened suddenly and softly in the evening' To the Lighthouse is at once a vivid impressionistic depiction of a family holiday, and a meditation on marriage, on parenthood and childhood, on grief, tyranny and bitterness. For years now the Ramsays have spent every summer in their holiday home in Scotland, and they expect these summers will go on forever; but as the First World War looms, the integrity of family and society will be fatally challenged. With a psychologically introspective mode, the use of memory, reminiscence and shifting perspectives gives the novel an intimate, poetic essence, and at the time of publication in 1927 it represented an utter rejection of Victorian and Edwardian literary values. A Room of One's Own and Three Guineas

Based on a lecture given at Cambridge and first published in 1929, `A Room of One's Own' interweaves Woolf's personal experience as a female writer with themes ranging from Austen and Bronte to Shakespeare's gifted (and imaginary) sister. `Three Guineas', Woolf's most impassioned polemic, came almost a decade later and broke new ground by challenging the very notions of war and masculinity. This volume combines two inspirational, witty and urbane essays from one of literature's pre-eminent voices; collectively they constitute a brilliant and lucid attack on sexual inequality.
