Me Cheeta: The Autobiography
Kate Summerscale, Guardian (Book of the Year) 'Easily my favourite book of the year!funny scandalous and moving.' Kathryn Hughes, Mail on Sunday (Books of the Year) 'It's the book everyone's talking about, a book that makes you gaffaw out loud.' Evening Standard (Books of the Year) 'A hilarious satire of memory and lore in Hollywood!Nabokovian, only hairier'.' Joseph O'Neill, Guardian 'Even though Cheeta has no morals or manners and gives an extravagantly unreliable account of himself, the personality that leaps from these pages remains a more plausible construction than those offered (in other celebrity memoirs). This unquestionably is the gold glinting in the cloacal slurry. Any celebs hoping to crack next year's Christmas market should take note: look upon the work of the guy with the hairy ears and saggy scarlet bottom and despair.' Independent on Sunday (Books of the Year) 'Undoubtedly the year's best not-a-memoir-at-all!It's hard to conceive of anyone who'd like a biography for Christmas who wouldn't like a copy of this truly, horribly funny book.' Daily Telegraph (Books of the Year) 'It is a lovely way to look at the history of Hollywood, and probably more truthful than most accounts.' Spectator 'The literary equivalent of Cheeta's own triple-back-flip-handclap-double-lip-flip-and-grin"...all of this delivered in glorious inventive prose. Whoever you are, I salute you!' Scotland on Sunday 'A hilarious book.' Sunday Times 'Me Cheeta may well be the finest Hollywood memoir ever written...right up there with the likes of David Niven.' Mail On Sunday 'Laugh-out-loud hilarious...also a moving tribute to the man who will forever be associated with the role of Tarzan.' Sunday Telegraph 'The most rollicking showbiz-memoir since David Niven's Bring on the Empty Horses...Me Cheeta is a satirical masterpiece.' Telegraph 'A unique, witty and magnificently bitchy Hollywood satire -- and oddly touching to boot.' Metro (Books of the Year) 'You'll not read a better evocation of celebritydom. The best celebrity memoir you'll read this year...a joyous satire on Hollywood's Golden Age.'Observer 'Admirably irreverent and iconoclastic.' Sunday Business Post 'What a memoir it is!' The Sunday Tribune 'Not many come as honest as this banana-munching, Tarzan-famed fella.' Zoo Magazine '!a lot better than a fictional autobiography of Hollywood chimpanzee ought to be!amusing.' Me Case Con Un Comunista

Manhattan is my Beat
Jeffrey Deaver knows how to hook readers and keep them guessing with suspenseful, twisty plots. This early Deaver effort, originally published in 1988, will not disappoint fans dazzled by his subsequent, high-profile Lincoln Rhyme series (The Bone Collector, The Coffin Dancer, The Empty Chair.) Manhattan Is My Beat takes its name from the (invented) 1947 film noir watched obsessively by murder victim Robert Kelly. Our heroine, Rune, (a punk with a heart of gold) works for Washington Square Video. On a routine pickup to retrieve Manhattan Is My Beat, she discovers Kelly just shot dead, the target of a professional hit. Rune and a woman jogger glimpse the presumed killer as he speeds off in a green car. While cops drag their heels in solving the mystery, Rune takes matters into her own hands, convinced that the motive for the murder is a missing suitcase stuffed with one million dollars--the subject, not coincidentally, of the film that Kelly and Rune both admired. An avid fan of fantasy novels and prone to see life through the prism of magic and quests, Rune takes up the challenge of finding the lost money and catching Kelly&aposs killers. But the formidable hit team is intent upon destroying both possible witnesses to the murder, and their nimble crosses and double-crosses--some of which the reader sees, some of which are revealed at the end--make for fun reading. Plotting moves briskly in this novel, except for a slowdown in the story--Rune&aposs ambiguous romance with downtown poseur Richard has little to do with catching killers. The conclusion, while neatly wrapped, is marred by the sudden appearance of a crucial detail that Deaver produces like a fancy dish under the waiter&aposs silver dome. But the gimmick to offset the conclusion&aposs predictability feels like a cheat rather than a revelation. All in all, however, the novel is excellent mind candy, a thrilling romp lead by an agile, street-smart heroine. i Deaver writes with clarity, compassion, and intelligence, and with a decidedly human and contemporary slant -- -- Publishers Weekly /i

The Exiled
Trust no one.
It is six months since the Arcadia set sail for the first time in forty years. But this wasn't the freedom the inhabitants were hoping for. Esther Crossland did what she had to do, but it has left a trail of destruction in her wake. Now the wrecked ship is abandoned. Its inhabitants are in exile, trapped in sprawling make-shift shelters made up of warehouse, tents, shipping containers.
Esther and Nik, architects of the rebellion, are on the run. Esther is in hiding, desperate to do something to help her people, and Nik seems to have abandoned all hope, on a journey taking him further and further from home. And neither of them want to face up to their true feelings about one another...
Not only that, there is a new villain in town. With the fall of Commander Hadley, it's left to the ruthless Admiral Janek to deal with the traitors, and her own past is beginning to catch-up with her.
Then the shaky ceasefire negotiated by General Lall, Nik's mum, falls apart. Nik and Esther find themselves in a world of betrayals and double crossings - a game of power, with no one to trust but themselves.
It's time for the final showdown.
The Dawn and Its Light
All that remains...
If Nox and Amaris are ever to have the life together they've always hoped for, they will have to use all the power and strength within them to protect their continent. When powerful enemies from Sulgrave wielding unspeakable access to magic threaten to shatter their world for good, they must join with Raascot's military, the reevers, and an unlikely ally from the mountains to have any hope of saving their kingdoms. Together, their forces press north across deadly wastelands, facing unknowable threats, impossible battles...and new questions of what their fate truly holds.
Their entire lives have been building toward this moment. Caught between faith and frenzy, questions and identity, love and lust, past and present, Nox and Amaris's story draws to an explosive conclusion as they fight once and for all to protect their people, their future, and each other.
What Hunts Inside the Shadows
Perfect for fans of A Court of Thorns and Roses and From Blood and Ash.
Book two in the Of Flesh & Bone series!
Once, I fell in love with a man who deceived me.
For weeks, he stood by my side, twisting his words into pretty half-truths. He enraptured me with his smooth temptation, leaving no corner of my being untouched. He consumed my mind and my body, then finally claimed my heart for himself. But Caelum's true identity is terrifying enough to bring me to my knees.
Then, I discovered the truth of who he is.
Caldris is whispered in the Nothrek wind. The legend we only speak of with hushed words, in shuttered rooms, for fear of drawing his wrath once again. His intentions are a mystery, his desires impure, and he seeks to shackle me to his side for all eternity. With the Wild Hunt as our guard, he points us back to where it all began: the village of Mistfell and the boundary where the Veil once shimmered in the wind.
Now, another secret crouches, poised to change everything.
The Mist Guard have been sworn to keep us from crossing into Alfheimr, and from treading Faerie soil, even if innocents must pay with their lives. They have orders to resurrect Mistfell's shimmering barrier, but, once again, there's a greater cost than what has been revealed. Once, the people of Northrek blamed me when the Veil fell.
Soon, they'll want me to pay the price the magic requires.
For Profit
We have long been suspicious of corporations recklessly pursuing profit and amassing wealth and power.
But the story of the corporation didn't have to be like this. For most of history, they were not amoral entities, but public institutions designed to promote the societies that granted them charter. Magnuson reveals how the corporation has evolved since its beginnings in the ancient world. What happens in this next chapter of the global economy depends on whether we can return to their public-minded spirit, or whether we have sunk irrevocably into the swamp of high profit at all costs.
Epic and compelling in scope, For Profit illuminates the roles corporations played, for good and evil, in the making of the modern world.
On Giving Up
From acclaimed psychoanalyst Adam Phillips, a meditation on what we must give up to feel more alive.
To give up or not to give up?
The question can feel inescapable but the answer is never simple.
Giving up our supposed vices is one thing; giving up on life itself is quite another. One form of self-sacrifice feels positive, something to admire and aspire to, while the other is profoundly unsettling, if not actively undesirable.
There are always, it turns out, both good and bad sacrifices, but it is not always clear beforehand which is which. We give something up because we believe we can no longer go on as we are. In this sense, giving up is a critical moment - an attempt to make a different future.
In On Giving Up, acclaimed psychoanalyst Adam Phillips illuminates both the gaps and the connections between the many ways of giving up, and helps us to address the central question: what must we give up in order to feel more alive?
Ed Ruscha / Now Then
A sweeping cross-media survey of Ruscha’s six-decade career, from paintings and works on paper to photographs and artist's books, with essays by leading scholars
Spanning 65 years of Ed Ruscha’s remarkable career and mirroring his own cross-disciplinary approach, Ed Ruscha / Now Then features over 250 objects, produced from 1958 to the present, including paintings, drawings, prints, films, photographs, artist’s books and installations. Published to accompany the most comprehensive presentation of the artist’s work to date, and his first solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, this richly illustrated catalog highlights Ruscha’s most acclaimed works alongside lesser-known aspects of his practice.
Essays by an interdisciplinary group of contributors examine Ruscha’s work under a new light, beyond the categories of Pop and Conceptual art with which he has traditionally been associated, to present fresh perspectives on one of the most influential figures in postwar American art. Taken together, they underscore Ruscha’s singular contributions, including his material exploration of language, experiments with unconventional mediums?such as gunpowder, chocolate or chewing tobacco?and his groundbreaking self-published books. Supplemented by an illustrated chronology and exhibition history, this publication captures the ceaseless reinvention that has defined his prolific, six-decade career.
Ed Ruscha (born 1937) was raised in Oklahoma City and moved to Los Angeles in 1956, where he attended the Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts). First showing with the Ferus Gallery in the early 1960s, Ruscha was included in Walter Hopps' landmark Pop art show New Painting of Common Objects at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1962. He has since shown his work extensively, most recently in several medium-specific museum surveys, including the 2004 exhibition Cotton Puffs, Q-Tips®, Smoke and Mirrors: The Drawings of Ed Ruscha at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, which traveled to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, and the 2009 exhibition Ed Ruscha: Fifty Years of Painting at the Hayward Gallery, London, which traveled to the Haus der Kunst, Munich, and Moderna Museet, Stockholm. In 2005, he represented the United States at the 51st Venice Biennale. Ruscha lives and works in Los Angeles.
