Unmasked
"You have the luck of Croesus on stilts (as my Auntie Vi would have said) if you've had the sort of career, ups and downs, warts and all that I have in that wondrous little corner of show business called musical theatre."
One of the most successful and distinguished artists of our time, Andrew Lloyd Webber has reigned over the musical theatre world for nearly five decades. The winner of numerous awards, including multiple Tonys and an Oscar, Lloyd Webber has enchanted millions worldwide with his music and numerous hit shows, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera-Broadway's longest running show-and most recently, School of Rock. In Unmasked, written in his own inimitable, quirky voice, the revered, award-winning composer takes stock of his achievements, the twists of fate and circumstance which brought him both success and disappointment, and the passions that inspire and sustain him.
The son of a music professor and a piano teacher, Lloyd Webber reveals his artistic influences, from his idols Rodgers and Hammerstein and the perfection of South Pacific's `Some Enchanted Evening,' to the pop and rock music of the 1960s and Puccini's Tosca, to P. G. Wodehouse and T. S. Eliot. Lloyd Webber recalls his bohemian London youth, reminiscing about the happiest place of his childhood, his homemade Harrington Pavilion-a make-believe world of musical theatre in which he created his earliest entertainments.
A record of several exciting and turbulent decades of British and American musical theatre and the transformation of popular music itself, Unmasked is ultimately a chronicle of artistic creation. Lloyd Webber looks back at the development of some of his most famous works and illuminates his collaborations with luminaries such as Tim Rice, Robert Stigwood, Harold Prince, Cameron Mackintosh, and Trevor Nunn. Taking us behind the scenes of his productions, Lloyd Webber reveals fascinating details about each show, including the rich cast of characters involved with making them, and the creative and logistical challenges and artistic political battles that ensued.
Lloyd Webber shares his recollections of the works that have become cultural touchstones for generations of fans: writings songs for a school production that would become his first hit, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; finding the coterie of performers for his classic rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar; developing his first mega-hit, Evita, which would win seven Tonys Awards, including Best Musical; staking his reputation and fortune on the groundbreaking Cats; and making history with the dazzling The Phantom of the Opera.
Reflecting a life that included many passions (from architecture to Turkish Swimming Cats), full of witty and revealing anecdotes, and featuring cameo appearances by numerous celebrities-Elaine Paige, Sarah Brightman, David Frost, Julie Covington, Judi Dench, Richard Branson, A.R. Rahman, Mandy Patinkin, Patti LuPone, Richard Rodgers, Norman Jewison, Milos Forman, Placido Domingo, Barbra Streisand, Michael Crawford, Gillian Lynne, Betty Buckley, and more-Unmasked at last reveals the true face of the extraordinary man beneath the storied legend.

Chemickal Marriage
If HBO are looking for a project to follow Game of Thrones, they need seek no further ...an epic". (Scotsman). The adventure continues in G.W. Dahlquist's The Chemickal Marriage, the follow up to the popular The Glass Book of Dream Eaters and The Dark Volume. Miss Temple, young, wealthy and far away from home, never wanted to be a heroine. Yet her fiance is dead (admittedly, by her own hand), her companions slain and her nemesis, the terrifyingly wicked Contessa Lacquer-Sforza, escaped. It falls on her tiny shoulders to destroy a deadly cabal whose alchemy threatens to enslave the world. Miss Temple plots her revenge. But Dr Svenson and Cardinal Chang are alive, barely - their bodies corrupted by the poisonous blue glass. Wounded and outnumbered, Miss Temple, Dr Svenson and Cardinal Chang pursue their enemies through city slums and glittering palaces as they fight to prevent the cabal's crushing dominion and unholy marriage between man and machine. Dahlquist's rip-roaring adventure sees an assassin, an heiress and a surgeon battle against the world's most unholy evil, in their final quest. "If HBO are looking for a project to follow Game of Thrones, they need seek no further ...an epic which . ..will only grow in popularity over the years [thanks to] its virtues, hi-jinks, horror, decadence and derring-do". (Stuart Kelly, Scotsman). "Fantastic. Somewhere between Dickens, Sherlock Holmes and Rider Haggard. I was in seventh heaven". (Kate Mosse, author of Labyrinth on The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters). G. W. Dahlquist is a novelist and playwright. When he fell asleep during a snowstorm, his first book The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters came to him in a dream. This is his third novel. Originally from the Pacific Northwest, he now lives in New York.

The Shadow Land
From the #1 bestselling author of The Historian comes a mesmerizing novel that spans the past and the present—and unearths the troubled history of a gorgeous but haunted country. A young American woman, Alexandra Boyd, has traveled to Sofia, Bulgaria, hoping that life abroad will salve the wounds left by the loss of her beloved brother. Soon after arriving in this elegant East European city, however, she helps an elderly couple into a taxi—and realizes too late that she has accidentally kept one of their bags. Inside she finds an ornately carved wooden box engraved with a name: Stoyan Lazarov. Raising the hinged lid, she discovers that she is holding an urn filled with human ashes. As Alexandra sets out to locate the family and return this precious item, she will first have to uncover the secrets of a talented musician who was shattered by political oppression—and she will find out all too quickly that this knowledge is fraught with its own danger. Elizabeth Kostova’s new novel is a tale of immense scope that delves into the horrors of a century and traverses the culture and landscape of this mysterious country. Suspenseful and beautifully written, it explores the power of stories, the pull of the past, and the hope and meaning that can sometimes be found in the aftermath of loss. Advance praise for The Shadow Land “In The Shadow Land, Elizabeth Kostova, a master storyteller, brings vividly to life an unfamiliar country—Bulgaria—and a painful history that feels particularly relevant now. You won’t want to put down this remarkable book.”—Claire Messud, author of The Woman Upstairs “In this brilliant work, what appears at first a minor mystery quickly becomes emblematic of a whole country’s hidden history. Lyrical and compelling, The Shadow Land proves a profound meditation on how evil is inflicted, endured, and, through courage and compassion, defeated. Elizabeth Kostova’s third novel clearly establishes her as one of America’s finest writers.”—Ron Rash, author of The Risen “The Shadow Land is thrilling, and not just as a gripping tale. It’s also thrilling to watch such a talented writer cast her spell. The central character actually begins this deft novel in an urn, only to emerge as one of the most memorable characters I’ve encountered in a long time.”—Richard Russo, author of Everybody’s Fool “Transporting . . . draws us into Bulgarian history and character revelation like an elegant, mysterious labyrinth. Page-turning, evocative, and richly imagined.”—Dominic Smith, author of The Last Painting of Sara de Vos Praise for Elizabeth Kostova’s The Historian “Quite extraordinary . . . Kostova is a natural storyteller. . . . She has refashioned the vampire myth into a compelling contemporary novel, a late-night page-turner.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Hypnotic . . . a thrill ride through history.”—The Denver Post “Part thriller, part history, part romance . . . Kostova has a keen sense of storytelling and she has a marvelous story to tell.”—Baltimore Sun Praise for The Swan Thieves “Exquisite.”—The Boston Globe “Engrossing.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “Stunning . . . A beautifully written tale of art, love and an obsession triggered by both.”—Associated Press.

The Teeth of the Tiger
A man named Mohammed sits in a cafe in Vienna, about to propose a deal to a Colombian. Mohammed has a strong network of agents and sympathizers throughout Europe and the Middle East, and the Colombian has an equally strong drug network throughout America. What if they were to form an alliance, to combine all their assets and connections? The potential for profits would be enormous--and the potential for destruction unimaginable. In the Brave New World of terrorism--where anybody with a spare AK-47, a knowledge of kitchen chemistry, or simply the will to die can become a player--the old rules no longer apply. No matter what new governmental organizations come into being, the only truly effective ones are those that are quick and agile, free of oversight and restrictions...and outside the system. "Way" outside the system. In a nondescript office building in suburban Maryland, the firm Hendley Associates does a profitable business in stocks, bonds, and international currencies, but its true mission is quite different: to identify and locate terrorist threats, and then deal with them, in whatever manner necessary. Established with the knowledge of President John Patrick Ryan, "the Campus" is always on the lookout for promising new talent, its recruiters scattered throughout the armed forces and government agencies--and three men are about to cross its radar. The first is Dominic Caruso, a rookie FBI agent, barely a year out of Quantico, whose decisive actions resolve a particularly brutal kidnap/murder case. The second is Caruso's brother, Brian, a Marine captain just back from his first combat action in Afghanistan, and already a man to watch. And the third is their cousin...a young man named Jack Ryan, Jr. Jack was raised on intrigue. As his father moved through the ranks of the CIA and then into the White House, Jack received a life course in the world and the way it operates from agents, statesmen, analysts, Secret Service men, and black ops specialists such as John Clark and Ding Chavez. He wants to put it all to work now--but when he knocks on the front door of "the Campus," he finds that nothing has prepared him for what he is about to encounter. For it is indeed a different world out there, and in here...and it is about to become far more dangerous.

Azért is magába fogja bolondítani!

Nagy részletességgel, valós módszerek bemutatásával – kémkedés, kémelhárítás, beszervezés, kiberháború – nyerhetünk bepillantást a nemzetközi hírszerzés működésébe. A kötet 2014-ben elnyerte a rangos Edgar-díjat, és Jennifer Lawrence főszereplésével Francis Lawrence forgat belőle filmet Budapesten.

Homokhegy
A pazar jellemábrázolás mellett a közelmúlt Lengyelországáról is hiteles képet adó regény a színvonalas kelet-közép-európai szépirodalom iránt érdeklődők olvasmánya.

Ezek közül ebben a könyvben az alábbi témakörbe tartozó képsorokat mutatjuk be: A Maiestas Domini képkompozíció, A karácsonyi ünnepkör képei, A szenvedéstörténet képei, Az önálló Kálvária képek, Az Utolsó ítélet képsora, Szent Mihály kép, Vir dolorum kép, Veronika-kendő, Köpönyeges Mária, Ábrahám kebele kép.
Ezeknek a képeknek a művészi értéke szinte felbecsülhetetlen. Ezért úgy gondoljuk, hogy az ilyen elrendezésben való bemutatásuk, mely ennek a könyvnek a célja, egyfajta kulturális misszió is.

Levente mordvin íjászaival megsegíti a Batu fővárosába tartó halicsi fejedelmet egy riválisával vívott csatában. Danyiil katonai kíséretének elvesztése miatt kényszerűségből elfogadja Levente ajánlkozását, és együtt vágnak neki a két hónapos útnak. Danyiil IV. Béla halálos ellenfele, a hírhedt halicsi háborúk végső győztese, fejedelemsége azonban ekkor már a mongolok vazallus állama. Csak káni engedéllyel uralkodhat, miután hódolt Batunak.
Páncélos orosz bojárok, nomád lovasíjászok támadják a karavánt, a sivatagban megfosztják őket a vizüktől, orvlövészek vadásznak rájuk.

Vissza a felszínre

A dalmát háború
A tatárjárást követő években IV.
Levente nehéz szívvel fordul dél felé társaival és állataival: veleszületett tisztességérzete berzenkedik a kimondatlanul ráosztott orgyilkos szerep ellen, hűsége a király iránt mégis megingathatatlan.
Urbánszki László Anno Domini című, a tatárjárást követő években játszódó regénysorozatának újabb kötete méltó folytatása a nagy sikerű Vérszagra gyűl, Fegyver csörög és A lándzsa nemesei című regényeknek. A szerző mélységesen szerethető és gyűlölhető hőseinek rendkívül fordulatos kalandjain keresztül - kiterjedt történelmi kutatómunkára támaszkodva - egyedülálló módon mutatja be a XIII. századi Magyarország sorsfordító eseményeit és hétköznapjait, főurait és legszegényebb parasztjait.
