Cestou do Babadagu
Boli ste už na konci sveta? Fajn.
Andrzej Stasiuk to veľmi dobre vie. Vo svojej legendárnej cestopisnej knihe Cestou do Babadagu nás pozýva na potulky po tých najzabudnutejších kútoch strednej a východnej Európy – bez mapy a bez presného cieľa; autom, vlakom, či autostopom. Navštívime Poľsko, východné Slovensko, Maďarsko, Rumunsko, Albánsko, Moldavsko i Ukrajinu.
Stačí ju vysypať na podlahu a spomedzi pokrčených bankoviek a postrácaných mincí nechať vypadnúť desiatky príbehov cestách tretej a štvrtej kategórie, zapadnutých benzínkach, opustených železničných staniciach či zadymených ospalých krčmičkách uprostred ničoho.
Nie je to však len obyčajný cestopis. Je to tiež dobrodružná výprava do vedomia obyvateľov tejto časti sveta, do vedomia poznačeného vojnami, desaťročiami sovietskej nadvlády i následnej bujarej posttotalitnej anarchii.
Kniha Andrzeja Stasiuka Cestou do Babadagu vychádza v preklade Karola Chmela.

Československý odboj za druhé světové války
Volné pokračování bestselleru Českoslovenští legionáři za první světové
Poutavá a graficky nadstandardně výpravná publikace přehledně mapuje historii československého odboje v letech 1939 až 1945.
Rychlou a snadnou orientaci usnadňuje přehledná struktura knihy, v níž hlavní text doplňují poznámky, tabulky, citáty a v neposlední řadě více než 150 kvalitních fotografií. Přes svou čtivost a srozumitelnost si přitom kniha zachovává vysokou odbornou úroveň a interpretační vyváženost.

Degrees of Separation Bohumil Kubišta and the European Avant-Garde
In Beyond the Avant Garde, scholars from Czechia, Canada, Germany, and Hungary take a new approach to exploring the work of one of Central Europes most interesting modernist painters -- Bohumil Kubišta. While many art historians have consigned Kubištas work into an idealized Czech canon, Kubišta did not identify with a nation state clearly defined by ethnicity, language, and territorial reach. Although born and raised in the Czech lands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he traveled widely, maintained important international contacts, and served as a successful artillery officer in Austro-Hungarian army during World War I. Taking a transnational approach that incorporates thorough topographical research, the authors of Beyond the Avant-Garde: Bohumil Kubišta and European Modern Art attempt to redraw the current map of European modernism by exploring the artists subversive approach to the stylistic currents of his time. The book reveals the complex artistic, cultural, and historical relationships within early twentieth-century Europe, as Kubišta and other Central Europan artists tried to balance their admiration for the dominant artistic trends coming out of Paris with their desire to find alternative forms expression, arising from local artistic and intellectual sources. It traces Kubišta's steps through the boulevards and cafes of Paris and other cities, such as Florence and Pula, while also using cartographic techniques to record the progress of his artwork between various artistic points on Europes artistic map. In addition to the twenty scholarly chapters, the book features a wealth of documentation, including: high quality images of the artists work; an exhaustive 160-page timeline with notes from and about the artist, as well as documentary support; a comprehensive inventory of 363 Kubišta works; an exhibition list from 1907 to 2019.

Lacná kniha Čunovo Sandorf Dunacsún (-90%)
Čunovo je najjužnejšou mestskou časťou Bratislavy. Leží v hraničnom trojuholníku medzi Rakúskom, Maďarskom a Slovenskom. Na základe Parížskej mierovej konferencie boli obce Rusovce, Jarovce a Čunovo v roku 1947 pripojené k Československu. Prvá písomná zmienka pochádza z roku 1232, z obdobia vlády kráľa Ondreja II. Epidémia cholery v roku 1497 a následná turecká expanzia podunajskú oblasť vyľudnili. Začiatkom 16. storočia sa sem presídlili Chorváti utekajúci pred turkami. Našli tu druhú vlasť a svoje kultúrne tradície i reč udržujú dodnes. V roku 1972 bolo Čunovo pripojené ako mestská časť k hlavnému mestu Bratislava.

Espana: A Brief History of Spain
Bestselling author Giles Tremlett traverses the rich and varied history of Spain, from prehistoric times to today, in a brief, accessible primer for visitors, curious readers and hispanophiles.
Spain's position on Europe's south-western corner has exposed it to cultural, political and actual winds blowing from all quadrants. Africa lies a mere nine miles to the south. The Mediterranean connects it to the civilizational currents of Phoenicians, Romans, Carthaginians, and Byzantines as well as the Arabic lands of the near east. Bronze Age migrants from the Russian steppe were amongst the first to arrive. They would be followed by Visigoths, Arabs, Napoleonic armies and many more invaders and immigrants. Circular winds and currents linked it to the American continent, allowing Spain to conquer and colonize much of it.
As a result, Spain has developed a sort of hybrid vigour. Whenever it has tried to deny this inevitable heterogeneity, it has required superhuman effort to fashion a 'pure' national identity - which has proved impossible to maintain. In Espaňa, Giles Tremlett argues that, in fact, that lack of a homogenous identity is Spain's defining trait.

The Blazing World
A major new history of England's turbulent seventeenth century and how it marked the birth of a new world
The seventeenth century began as the English suddenly found themselves ruled by a Scotsman, and ended in the shadow of an invasion by the Dutch. Under James I, the country suffered terrorism and witch panics. Under his son Charles, state and society collapsed into civil war, to be followed by an army coup and regicide. For a short time – for the only time in history – England was a republic. There were bitter struggles over faith and no boundaries to politics. In the coffee shops and alehouses of plague-ridden London, new ideas were forged that were angry, populist and almost impossible for monarchs to control.
Despite the radical changes that transformed England, few today understand the story of this revolutionary age. Leaders like Oliver Cromwell, Charles II, and William of Orange have been reduced to caricatures, while major turning points like the Civil War and the Glorious Revolution have become shrouded in myth and misunderstanding. Yet the seventeenth century has never been more relevant. The British constitution is once again being contested, and we face a culture war reminiscent of when the Roundheads fought the Cavaliers.
From raw politics to religious divisions, civil wars to witch trials, plague to press freedoms, The Blazing World is the story of a strange but fascinating century, told in sparkling detail. Drawing on vast archives, Jonathan Healey refreshes our understanding of public figures while simultaneously taking us into the lives of ordinary people to illuminate a revolutionary society that forged a new world.

Colonialism
In the wake of the dissolution of the Soviet empire in 1989, many believed that we had arrived at the 'End of History' - that the global dominance of liberal democracy had been secured forever.
Now however, with Russia rattling its sabre on the borders of Europe and China rising to challenge the post-1945 world order, the liberal West faces major threats.
These threats are not only external. Especially in the Anglosphere, the 'decolonisation' movement corrodes the West's self-confidence by retelling the history of European and American colonial dominance as a litany of racism, exploitation, and massively murderous violence.
Nigel Biggar tests this indictment, addressing the crucial questions in eight chapters: Was the British Empire driven primarily by greed and the lust to dominate? Should we speak of 'colonialism and slavery' in the same breath, as if they were identical? Was the Empire essentially racist? How far was it based on the theft of land? Did it involve genocide? Was it driven fundamentally by the motive of economic exploitation? Was undemocratic colonial government necessarily illegitimate? and, Was the Empire essentially violent, and its violence pervasively racist and terroristic?
Biggar makes clear that, like any other long-standing state, the British Empire involved elements of injustice, sometimes appalling. On occasions it was culpably incompetent and presided over moments of dreadful tragedy.
Nevertheless, from the early 1800s the Empire was committed to abolishing the slave trade in the name of a Christian conviction of the basic equality of all human beings. It ended endemic inter-tribal warfare, opened local economies to the opportunities of global trade, moderated the impact of inescapable modernisation, established the rule of law and liberal institutions such as a free press, and spent itself in defeating the murderously racist Nazi and Japanese empires in the Second World War.
As encyclopaedic in historical breadth as it is penetrating in analytical depth, Colonialism offers a moral inquest into the colonial past, forensically contesting damaging falsehoods and thereby helping to rejuvenate faith in the West's future.

Red Memory
An indelible exploration of the Cultural Revolution and how it shapes China today, Red Memory uncovers forty years of silence through the rarely heard stories of individuals who lived through Mao's decade of madness.
A 13-year-old Red Guard revels in the great adventure, and struggles with her doubts. A silenced composer, facing death, determines to capture the turmoil. An idealistic student becomes the 'corpse master' ...
More than fifty years on, the Cultural Revolution's scar runs through the heart of Chinese society, and through the souls of its citizens. Stationed in Beijing for the Guardian, Tania Branigan came to realise that this brutal and turbulent decade continues to propel and shape China to this day. Yet official suppression and personal trauma have conspired in national amnesia: it exists, for the most part, as an absence.
Red Memory explores the stories of those who are driven to confront the era, fearing or yearning its return. What happens to a society when you can no longer trust those closest to you? What happens to the present when the past is buried, exploited or redrawn? And how do you live with yourself when the worst is over?

Zulejka otvára oči
Mladá tatárska spisovateľka Guzeľ Jachina sa vo svojom debute vracia do jedného z najťažších období Sovietskeho zväzu – do tridsiatych rokov minulého storočia, kedy boľševická moc kruto postihovala všetkých, ktorí sa nezmierili s jej diktatúrou. Román Zulejka otvára oči rozvíja príbeh ženy, ktorú drsne vytrhli z prirodzeného prostredia, nespravodlivo poslali do pracovného tábora na Sibíri, no ona si tam spontánne uchovala svoju prirodzenú ľudskosť.

Nakonec navrhuje politickou i duchovní linii úniku z mechanizovaného světa simulaker a spektáklů; jinými slovy, plánuje útěk z ráje, v němž dějinám a všem velkým příběhům odzvonilo.

Nechybí ani popis dramatického průběhu jednotlivých sezon a klíčových závodů, včetně největší tragédie v dějinách motoristického sportu, k níž došlo v roce 1955 v Le Mans. Kniha je doplněna množstvím unikátních dobových fotografií a tabulkami s umístěními vozů Mercedes v závodech 20. století.
Nine Quarters of Jerusalem
In Jerusalem, what you see and what is true are two different things. Maps divide the walled Old City into four quarters, yet that division doesn't reflect the reality of mixed and diverse neighbourhoods. Beyond the crush and frenzy of its major religious sites, much of the Old City remains little known to visitors, its people overlooked and their stories untold. Nine Quarters of Jerusalem lets the communities of the Old City speak for themselves. Ranging through ancient past and political present, it evokes the city's depth and cultural diversity.
Matthew Teller's highly original 'biography' features the Old City's Palestinian and Jewish communities, but also spotlights its Indian and African populations, its Greek and Armenian and Syriac cultures, its downtrodden Dom Gypsy families and its Sufi mystics. It discusses the sources of Jerusalem's holiness and the ideas - often startlingly secular - that have shaped lives within its walls. Nine Quarters of Jerusalem is an evocation of place through story, led by the voices of Jerusalemites.

The Greek Revolution
In the exhausted, repressive years that followed Napoleon's defeat in 1815, there was one cause that came to galvanize countless individuals across Europe and the United States: freedom for Greece.
Mark Mazower's wonderful new book recreates one of the most compelling, unlikely and significant events in the story of modern Europe. In the face of near impossible odds, the people of the villages, valleys and islands of Greece rose up against Sultan Mahmud II and took on the might of the imperial Ottoman armed forces, its Turkish cavalrymen, Albanian foot soldiers and the fearsome Egyptians. Despite the most terrible disasters, they held on until military intervention by Russia, France and Britain finally secured the kingdom of Greece.
Mazower brilliantly brings together the different strands of the story. He takes us into the minds of revolutionary conspirators and the terrors of besieged towns, the stories of itinerant priests, sailors and slaves, ambiguous heroes and defenceless women and children struggling to stay alive amid a conflict of extraordinary brutality. Ranging across the Eastern Mediterranean and far beyond, he explores the central place of the struggle in the making of Romanticism and a new kind of politics that had volunteers flocking from across Europe to die in support of the Greeks. A story of how statesmen came to terms with an even more powerful force than themselves - the force of nationalism - this is above all a book about how people decided to see their world differently and, at an often terrible cost to themselves and their families, changed history.

Pirate Enlightenment, or the Real Libertalia
The Enlightenment did not begin in Europe. Its true origins lie thousands of miles away on the island of Madagascar, in the late seventeenth century, when it was home to several thousand pirates. This was the Golden Age of Piracy, a period of violent buccaneering and rollicking legends - but it was also, argues anthropologist David Graeber, a brief window of radical democracy, as the pirate settlers attempted to apply the egalitarian principles of their ships to a new society on land.
For Graeber, Madagascar's lost pirate utopia represents some of the first stirrings of Enlightenment political thought. In this jewel of a book, he offers a way to 'decolonize the Enlightenment', demonstrating how this mixed community experimented with an alternative vision of human freedom, far from that being formulated in the salons and coffee houses of Europe. Its actors were Malagasy women, merchants and traders, philosopher kings and escaped slaves, exploring ideas that were ultimately to be put into practice by Western revolutionary regimes a century later.
Pirate Enlightenment playfully dismantles the central myths of the Enlightenment. In their place comes a story about the magic, sea battles, purloined princesses, manhunts, make-believe kingdoms, fraudulent ambassadors, spies, jewel thieves, poisoners and devil worship that lie at the origins of modern freedom.
