The Code Breaker
The best-selling author of Leonardo da Vinci and Steve Jobs returns.
In 2012, Nobel Prize winning scientist Jennifer Doudna hit upon an invention that will transform the future of the human race: an easy-to-use tool that can edit DNA.
Known as CRISPR, it opened a brave new world of medical miracles and moral questions. It has already been deployed to cure deadly diseases, fight the coronavirus pandemic of 2020, and make inheritable changes in the genes of babies.
But what does that mean for humanity? Should we be hacking our own DNA to make us less susceptible to disease? Should we democratise the technology that would allow parents to enhance their kids?
After discovering this CRISPR, Doudna is now wrestling these even bigger issues.
THE CODE BREAKERS is an examination of how life as we know it is about to change - and a brilliant portrayal of the woman leading the way.
The Role of Company Culture in Mergers and Acquisitions
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, University of Linz (International Management), course: Current Issues in International Management, language: English, abstract: This thesis will provide a clear understanding of how and why company culture is such an important factor in M&A. First of all, mergers, acquisitions and company culture will be defined. Then, different types of company cultures are analysed regarding their mutual compatibility. This is followed by an explanation of how cultural integration can take place and how managers can facilitate it. Finally, important findings are summarized and discussed. As globalization progresses, so does the internationalization of companies. In the course of this development, over the last 30 years, the forming of mergers and acquisitions has become very popular. One of the greatest challenges in a merger or an acquisition is aligning the company culture of the merging partners before, during and after the merger. Company culture - or the lack of an integrated company culture - can crucially influence the success or failure of a merger or acquisition. However, in spite of the fact that there are a lot of ways to facilitate cultural integration, it is something that is often neglected in the planning phase, which makes it all the more difficult to accomplish successfully further along in the process.
Without You, There is No Us : My Secret Life Teaching the Sons of North Korea's Elite
It is 2011, and all universities in North Korea have been shut down for an entire year, except for the all-male Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. This is where Suki Kim has accepted a job teaching English. Over the next six months she will eat three meals a day with her young charges and struggle to teach them to write, all under the watchful eye of the regime. Life at the university is lonely and claustrophobic. Her letters are read by censors and she must hide her notes and photographs not only from her minders but also from her colleagues, evangelical Christian missionaries, whose faith she does not share. As the weeks pass she discovers how easily her students lie, and how total is their obedience to Kim Jong-il. She also, bravely, hints at the existence of a world beyond their own: the internet, free travel, democracy, and other ideas forbidden in a country where torture and execution are commonplace. Yet her pupils are also full of boyish enthusiasm, with flashes of curiosity not yet extinguished. Without You, There Is No Us offers a moving and incalculably rare glimpse of life inside the world's most inscrutable country.

Seriously Bitter Sweet
When Bittersweet was published in 2003, home bakers were left to rely on baking chocolate that was labelled simply 'bittersweet' or 'semisweet' with no further explanation of the content of the product. Fast forward to 2013 and the world of chocolate has changed dramatically. Now there are artisanal chocolatiers all over the globe making chocolates with cocoa in every percentage to yield recipes with very different results. To respond to this, Alice Medrich has updated Seriously Bitter Sweet and filled it with her vast knowledge of baking with chocolate. Each recipe contains notes for the baker, so whether you are baking with a mild 52 per cent chocolate from Scharffen Berger or an intense 72 per cent chocolate from Ghirardelli, the recipes can be customised to yield fantastic results.

Shinrin-yoku
Shinrin Yoku or 'forest bathing' was developed in Japan in the 1980s and brings together ancient ways and wisdom with cutting edge environmental health science. There are now forest bathing stations and walkways scattered throughout Japan, although the good news is that we can all benefit from this simple practice.
Simply put, forest bathing is the practice of walking slowly through the woods, in no hurry, for a morning, an afternoon or a day. It is a practice that involves all the senses and as you gently walk and breathe deeply, the essential oils of the trees are absorbed by your body and have an extraordinary effect on positive feelings, stress hormone levels, parasympathetic nervous activity, sympathetic nervous activity, blood pressure, heart rate and brain activity.
In this wonderful book, by the leading expert in the field, science meets nature and mindfulness, as we are encouraged to bathe in the trees and become observers of both the nature around us and the goings on of our own minds.

Rise Up Women!
Marking the centenary of female suffrage, this definitive history charts women's fight for the vote through the lives of those who took part, in a timely celebration of an extraordinary struggle
An Observer Pick of 2018
A New Statesman Book of 2018
Between the death of Queen Victoria and the outbreak of the First World War, while the patriarchs of the Liberal and Tory parties vied for supremacy in parliament, the campaign for women's suffrage was fought with great flair and imagination in the public arena.
Led by Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters Christabel and Sylvia, the suffragettes and their actions would come to define protest movements for generations to come. From their marches on Parliament and 10 Downing Street, to the selling of their paper, Votes for Women, through to the more militant activities of the Women's Social and Political Union, whose slogan `Deeds Not Words!' resided over bombed pillar-boxes, acts of arson and the slashing of great works of art, the women who participated in the movement endured police brutality, assault, imprisonment and force-feeding, all in the relentless pursuit of one goal: the right to vote.
A hundred years on, Diane Atkinson celebrates the lives of the women who answered the call to `Rise Up'; a richly diverse group that spanned the divides of class and country, women of all ages who were determined to fight for what had been so long denied. Actresses to mill-workers, teachers to doctors, seamstresses to scientists, clerks, boot-makers and sweated workers, Irish, Welsh, Scottish and English; a wealth of women's lives are brought together for the first time, in this meticulously researched, vividly rendered and truly defining biography of a movement.

The Captain Class
The secret to winning is not what you think it is.
It's not the coach. It's not the star.
It's not money. It's not a strategy.
It's something else entirely.
The founding editor of The Wall Street Journal's sports section profiles the greatest teams in history and identifies the counterintuitive leadership qualities of the unconventional men and women who drove them to succeed. Fuelled by a lifetime of sports spectating, twenty years of reporting, and a decade of painstaking research, The Captain Class is not just a book on sports; it is the key to how successful teams are built and how transformative leadership is born.
Several years ago, Sam Walker set out to answer the most hotly debated sports question: what are the greatest teams of all time? He devised a formula, applied it to thousands of teams and listed the 16 most dominant teams ever across all sports, from the English Premiere League to the NFL. But what did these freak teams have in common?
As Walker dug deeper, a pattern emerged: all teams were driven by a singular type of leader, a captain, but not one you might expect. They were unorthodox outliers - awkward and disagreeable, marginally skilled, poor communicators, rule breaking and rather than pursuing fame, hid in the shadows. Captains, in short, who challenge your assumption of what inspired leadership looks like.
Covering world renowned teams like Barcelona, Brazil, the All Blacks and the New York Yankees to lesser known successes of Soviet ice hockey or French handball, The Captain Class unveils the seven key qualities that make an exceptional leader. Drawing on original interviews with athletes, coaches and managers from two dozen countries, Walker questions if great captains are made or born, why teams pick the wrong captain and how the value of the captain can be revived.
