Artificial Intelligence and Architecture
Artificial Intelligence's (AI) encounter with Architecture is still in its infancy. However, current experiments and applications already are a testimony to their gradual intersection.
This book provides an introduction to the topic through the triple lens of History, Application, and Theory. A chronology of Architecture's technological evolution first puts AI back in the context of the discipline. The author then presents a collection of AI's applications in Architecture. The book finally gives the stage to contributors working at the forefront of this revolution. From Harvard to Foster & Partners, their perspectives provide a panorama of the discourse surrounding AI's presence in the field.

Architecture In Spain
It might surprise some to hear that Spain has a vibrant culture of contemporary architecture. Delayed by the Spanish Civil War and the ensuing dictatorship under Franco, the emergence of modernity in Spain may have been late in coming, but todays yo
ung architects are making up for lost time in a spectacular way. Original personalities like César Manrique Cabrera marked a move toward the modern in the 1960s, while Richard Bofills innovative work in the 70s helped bring Spanish architecture to
the world stage. In the 1990s, architects such as Rafael Moneo and Santiago Calatrava began to create the look of contemporary architecture in Spain as we know it today. From a modern interpretation of a bullring to cutting-edge green architecture, t
he book covers a dizzying variety of architectural innovation.

ReUse Architecture
Societal and economic transitions have left numerous buildings redundant. Thanks to the esteem enjoyed by any sort of historic building fabric, an increasing awareness of sustainability issues as well as economic considerations, unused structures are now frequently being examined to determine what kind of new use might be suitable. These considerations take place in an area of tension between the poles of functional use of existing architecture as raw material, conscious inclusion of historical significance and radical new architectural interpretations.
This volume presents more than 100 projects from around the world which are distinguished by a change of function they have undergone: from a police station to a cinema, from a bunker to an office, from a transformer station to a synagogue and from a swimming pool to an art center, among other creative re-uses. The innovative buildings and spaces are therefore emerging with layers superimposed on top of one another; the original function usually still provides the scale and structure, into which a new matrix of utilization is installed.

Affordable Architecture
This new book by Stephen Crafti showcases innovative budget-driven architecture. These new houses, extensive renovations, and kit homes illustrate how dreams can be achieved with restricted funds. Rather than attempting to fulfill endless wish lists, the architects and designers of these budget-conscious projects first assessed what was needed. Including more than 40 projects from Europe, the United States, Japan, and Australia, this book highlights the fact that strong ideas are often more valuable than unlimited budgets. And in lean times, more people are looking for imaginative solutions that won't cost the earth.

Brazil's Modern Architecture
This is the most comprehensive survey and analysis of twentieth-century Brazilian Architecture, written by Brazilian architects and writers for an international audience. Its key events and buildings appear not in a conventional chronological account but within a series of thematic chapters (critical reception, construction issues, urbanism, typological description of the modern house, affordable housing and new fields of practice, survey of recent works). It is a history of Brazilian modern architecture retold with a Brazilian voice by the new generation of critics and historians. This book offers a fresh reading of the well-known era of high-modernism of the 1930s-1960s placing it within both the context of architecture before and since and the broader changes taking place in Brazilian culture at the time. It also charts post-Brasilia developments, including contemporary projects, showing how architects have adapted to the contradictions of an increasingly polarised society and the relevance of Brazilian architecture for current debates around issues such as large-scale urban growth and the tension between local identities and global civilisation. Covering around 200 projects, it is extensively illustrated with both historical black and white photographs and new colour photographs and drawings In cultural terms, Brazil is famous for its music and its architecture. As the largest and richest country in Latin America, Brazil is set apart from the others by its language, and by the ethnic diversity of its population, all of which contribute to its cultural distinctiveness. Yet, the architecture of twentieth-century Brazil is all too often represented by the work of one man (Oscar Niemeyer) or by two cities (Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo). This book is a study of Brazilian architecture in the twentieth-century, from the first modern houses of the 1920s and Le Corbusier's seminal visits to the country, through the well-known 'heroic' period of the 1940s-1950s and its crisis post-1964 up to contemporary developments. The high-modernist era coincided with the period of Brazil's most rapid economic growth around the middle of the century, when the country was transformed from a predominantly agricultural economy with coffee as its principal export, into an urbanised society with an industrial economy that saw the creation of Brasilia, one of the most utopian projects of the Modern Movement. Towards the end of this period, as society became increasingly polarised between a prosperous middle class and a very poor underclass, architects also became more pre-occupied with the nature of public buildings and the problems linked to accelerated urban growth. What has usually been seen as a period of creative experimentation in architecture underwent a crisis with the advent of the military dictatorship in 1964, while the rapid growth of the economy was sustained and even increased, with the consequent rise in activity of the building industry until the 1980s, one of the inherent contradictions of Brazil that this book seeks to address. While conventional accounts treat 1964 as the end of Brazilian architecture, this was not the case. Brazilian architects adapted to the changed circumstances, and developed new strategies that were no less creative, but sometimes less demonstrative. This has been particularly so since the restoration of democracy in the early 1980s, and again, a major theme of the book is to show continuities between the more recent work and that of the high-modernist era of the mid-century. The book will be edited by Elisabetta Andreoli and Adrian Forty, who will frame the main chapters with the introduction and a foreword to the survey of recent works. Five Brazilian writers will contribute essays to the body of the book that, together, provide a thorough study of modernist architecture and beyond in Brazil, and examine the works from the 'inside', explaining the social, cultural and political context that is so crucial to understanding the architecture.

The task of the CE ZA AR Prize (Prize for Architecture) is to emphasise the cultural value of architectural works, to support the excellency of professional interventions of architects, but mainly to cultivate public awareness about the need for high-quality architecture as the basic principle of improving the quality of environment created through construction. This is the precise reason why the Slovak Chamber of Architects presents each years nominees as the best architectural works with special significance in the individual categories that deserve special attention for their original and extraordinary character.
Egypt - world architecture 25
This is TASCHEN's 25th anniversary - special edition! This is a large-format hardcover edition at a new low price. The architecture of the pharaohs represents some of the most impressive creative work ever produced in Egyptian art and yet it has never been completely assessed. Dietrich Wildung, Curator of the Egyptian Museum in Berlin, gives a compelling account of the breathtaking architectural achievements in the Valley of the Nile during one of the oldest architectural eras: from the earliest royal tombs from c. 3000 B.C. to the pyramids of Giza and the temples of Karnak and Luxor. This volume provides a fascinating insight into a civilization that has caught the imagination of countless generations since its demise, elucidating not only 3000 years of architectural history, but also outlining the related visual arts, reliefs and wall paintings. With more than 250 color illustrations, computer-aided reconstructions, plans of famous buildings and clear chronological tables that place architectural developments within the context of historical events, this publication makes a considerable and highly readable contribution towards a more profound understanding of Egyptian culture. Towards Zero Energy Architecture
Today, more than ever, architects must re-engage the forces of the sun to respond to the profound challenges of global warming and climate change. Towards Zero- Energy Architecture is a much needed call for the design professions to redefine architecture to help alleviate ecological problems. This book explores the theories, practices and principles of new approaches to solar architecture that foster both design excellence and low-energy use. Solar architecture is more than the sum of passive strategies, technological systems and ecological engineering. An architecture shaped by the sun responds to climate, place and site, and expresses an aesthetic based on the form-giving attributes of these environmental forces. To illustrate this, the author analyses ten awardwinning buildings from around the world, focusing on the details of the design strategy, the impact of local climate and the importance of seasonal changes in sunlight and wind strength. She further shows how new technology enables architects to achieve greater performance standards, while at the same time generating an environmental aesthetic. As well as its significance to architecture, this approach to building provides a critical means of integrating sustainability in our daily lives.
