Nick Brandt: The Day May Break
The Day May Break, photographed in Zimbabwe and Kenya in late 2020, is the first part of a global series portraying people and animals that have been impacted by environmental degradation and destruction. The people in the photos were all affected by climate change, displaced by cyclones and years-long droughts. Photographed at five sanctuaries, the animals were rescues that can never be re-wilded. As a result, it was safe for human strangers to be close to them, photographed so close to them, within the same frame. The fog on location is the unifying visual, as we increasingly find ourselves in a kind of limbo, a once-recognizable world now fading from view. However, in spite of their loss, these people and animals are the survivors. And therein lies possibility and hope.

Až koncem šedesátých let mu byla vrácena vojenská hodnost majora a v roce 1969 zrušil vyšší vojenský soud původní rozsudek státního soudu. Po roce 1990 byl povýšen do hodnosti plukovníka in memoriam.
Prostřednictvím této knihy se vám dostává do rukou výjimečná autentická výpověď člověka, jež byl přítomen všem významným okamžikům naší legionářské historie. Text vychází v původní nezkrácené verzi, pouze s připojenými vojensko-odbornými poznámkami PhDr. Zdeňka Vališe. Kniha vám umožní nahlédnout na tuto významnou část naší vojenské historie z jiného, možná trochu nezvyklého, úhlu. Break The Fall
A fiercely told survivorship novel about one girl's determination to push her body to win gold at the Olympics, and the power of uniting as women to speak out. The only thing seventeen-year-old Audrey Lee dreams about is swinging her way to Olympic glory. Nothing is going to stop her, not even the agony in her back.
Every spasm and ache will be worth it once she has that gold medal around her neck. But none of her training prepares her for her coach being led away in handcuffs, accused by a fellow gymnast of the unthinkable. No one knows what, or who to believe and Audrey's teammates go into meltdown.
As the Olympic torch closes in, Audrey has no idea who to trust, let alone what life holds after her final dismount. The only thing she can do is hope that in the end, belief in herself and what's left of her team, will be enough for gold.

I Will Break Through!
Per aspera ad astra
Through adversity to the stars
Milan Rastislav Štefánik was great not only for the Slovaks, but also for the Czechs and the French. A virtuoso in life and death, a magnificent example of a man who in every act surpassed himself. A man who went to the very limits of his strength to pursue his dream despite pain and adversity. The liberation of the Slovak nation was a work worthy of the measure of this man. His life was a composite of enormous faith, iron will and noble love for his nation.
In everyone there is a will to fly to the stars, but few manage to reach them. Only those whose desire is greatest can achieve this. While those lacking faith perished in the glow of street lamps, Štefánik managed to reach the stars.
Translated from the Slovak original Prebijem sa! Štefánik. Muž železnej vôle (an imprint of IKAR, a.s., 2018) by James Sutherland-Smith.
Ukážka z textu
The book I’ll Break Through!, reveals Milan Rastislav Štefánik as a man of flesh and blood with desires, loves, visions, but also pain and sorrow. The reader will also learn new and unknown details from Štefánik’s scientific, military and political career. Jozef Banáš offers an immensely engaging and comprehensive view of one of the most important figures in Slovak history.
Marek Eštok, Ambassador to the Council of Europe
The author presents in his typically engaging way the story of the greatest figure in modern Slovak history. It is a book which keeps the readers constantly engaged while giving them valuable historical accounts. I think that the novel should be of particular interest to younger readers, giving them insight and information about an important period insufficiently covered in school textbooks.
Ivan Šesták, co-founder of the Štefánik Memorial in Bratislava
Banáš’s documentary novel about M. R. Štefánik is a book that not only Slovak literature has been waiting for but also Slovak historiography. Its hero is a Slovak star, who managed to soar among the stars of global politics and leave indelible traces there just as a new constellation of the world was taking shape. Of course, neither the winners nor the losers have forgotten him. And to understand this miracle, forgotten either through negligence or disrespect for the truth, took Jozef Banáš years of research. Now, the miracle comes to life before our eyes, in all its grandeur and tragedy.

Comics Will Break Your Heart
Comics Will Break Your Heart is a sweet, funny contemporary teen romance for the inner geek in all of us from graphic novelist Faith Erin Hicks.
Miriam's family should be rich. After all, her grandfather was the co-creator of smash-hit comics series The TomorrowMen. But he sold his rights to the series to his co-creator in the 1960s for practically nothing, and now that's what Miriam has: practically nothing. And practically nothing to look forward to either. How can she afford college when her family can barely keep a roof above their heads?
As if she didn't have enough to worry about, Miriam's life gets much more complicated when a cute boy shows up in town . . . and turns out to be the grandson of the man who defrauded Miriam's grandfather, and heir to the TomorrowMen fortune.
In her endearing debut novel, cartoonist Faith Erin Hicks pens a sensitive and funny Romeo and Juliet tale about modern romance, geek royalty, and what it takes to heal the long-festering scars of the past (Spoiler Alert: love).
Už v roku 1949 napísala a so svojimi blízkymi z rómskej osady vo Veľkom Šariši naštudovala divadelnú hru Horiaci cigánsky tábor, s ktorou obišli takmer celé Československo a mali viac ako sto repríz. Lacková napísala prvú rómsku hru, nacvičila ju so svojimi príbuznými v chatrči cigánskej osady; písalo sa o nej s obdivom v novinách, pozdvihla romipen z blata ignorantského opovrhnutia.“

'Myself and Hugh . . . We're taking a break.'
'A city-with-fancy-food sort of break?'
If only.
Amy's husband Hugh says he isn't leaving her.
He still loves her, he's just taking a break - from their marriage, their children and, most of all, from their life together. Six months to lose himself in south-east Asia. And there is nothing Amy can say or do about it.
Yes, it's a mid-life crisis, but let's be clear: a break isn't a break up - yet . . .
However, for Amy it's enough to send her - along with her extended family of gossips, misfits and troublemakers - teetering over the edge.
For a lot can happen in six-months. When Hugh returns if he returns, will he be the same man she married? And will Amy be the same woman?
Because if Hugh is on a break from their marriage, then isn't she?
The Break isn't a story about falling in love but about staying in love. It is Marian Keyes at her funniest, wisest and brilliant best.

Quantum
'This is about gob-smacking science at the far end of reason ...Take it nice and easy and savour the experience of your mind being blown without recourse to hallucinogens' Nicholas Lezard, Guardian For most people, quantum theory is a byword for mysterious, impenetrable science. And yet for many years it was equally baffling for scientists themselves. In this magisterial book, Manjit Kumar gives a dramatic and superbly-written history of this fundamental scientific revolution, and the divisive debate at its core. Quantum theory looks at the very building blocks of our world, the particles and processes without which it could not exist. Yet for 60 years most physicists believed that quantum theory denied the very existence of reality itself. In this tour de force of science history, Manjit Kumar shows how the golden age of physics ignited the greatest intellectual debate of the twentieth century. Quantum theory is weird. In 1905, Albert Einstein suggested that light was a particle, not a wave, defying a century of experiments. Werner Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and Erwin Schrodinger's famous dead-and-alive cat are similarly strange. As Niels Bohr said, if you weren't shocked by quantum theory, you didn't really understand it. While "Quantum" sets the science in the context of the great upheavals of the modern age, Kumar's centrepiece is the conflict between Einstein and Bohr over the nature of reality and the soul of science. 'Bohr brainwashed a whole generation of physicists into believing that the problem had been solved', lamented the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Murray Gell-Mann. But in "Quantum", Kumar brings Einstein back to the centre of the quantum debate. "Quantum" is the essential read for anyone fascinated by this complex and thrilling story and by the band of brilliant men at its heart.

Women Who Dared - To Break All the Rules
Victoria Woodhull, Mary Wollstonecraft, Aimee Semple McPherson, Edwina Mountbatten, Margaret Argyll and Chanel were all women who dared. They had no time for what society said they could and couldn't do and would see the world bend before they did.
In 1872 a mesmerising psychic named Victoria Woodhull shattered tradition by running for the White House. Had she won the ensuing spectacle would surely have rivalled that of our own era. Abhorring such flamboyance, Mary Wollstonecraft inspired a revolution of thought with her pen as she issued women's first manifesto - still to be fulfilled.
From Aimee Semple McPherson, the first female preacher in America, to Coco Chanel, designer of an empire, these women became the change they wanted to see in society.
In Women Who Dared, Jeremy Scott pays tribute to them all with wit, verve and reverence.
