Good Fairies of New York
Morag and Heather, two eighteen-inch fairies with swords, green kilts and badly dyed hair fly through the window of the worst violinist in New York, an overweight and antisocial type named Dinnie, and vomit on his carpet. Who they are, how they came to New York and what this has to do with the lovely Kerry - who lives across the street, and has Crohn's Disease, and is making a flower alphabet - and what this has to do with the other fairies (of all nationalities) of New York, not to mention the poor repressed fairies of Britain, is the subject of this book. It has a war in it, and a most unusual production of Shakespeare's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and Johnny Thunders' New York Dolls guitar solos. What more could anyone desire from a book?

Sorrow Of Angels
It is three weeks since the boy came to town, carrying a book of poetry to return to the old sea captain - the poetry that did for his friend Bardur. Three weeks, but already Bardur's ghost has faded. Snow falls so heavily that it binds heaven and ea
rth together. As the villagers gather in the inn to drink schnapps and coffee while the boy reads to them from Shakespeare's Hamlet, Jens the postman stumbles in half dead, having almost frozen to his horse. On his next journey to the wide open fjord
s he is accompanied by the boy, and both must risk their lives for each other, and for an unusual item of mail. The Sorrow of Angels is a timeless literary masterpiece; in extraordinarily powerful language it brings the struggle between man and natur
e tangibly to life. It is the second novel in Stefansson's epic and elemental trilogy, though all can be read independently.

You Say Potato
Some people say scohn, while others say schown. He says bath, while she says bahth. You say potayto. I say potahto. And - wait a second, no one says potahto. No one's ever said potahto. Have they? From reconstructing Shakespeare's accent to the rise and fall of Received Pronunciation, actor Ben Crystal and his linguist father David travel the world in search of the stories of spoken English. Everyone has an accent, though many of us think we don't. We all have our likes and dislikes about the way other people speak, and everyone has something to say about 'correct' pronunciation. But how did all these accents come about, and why do people feel so strongly about them? Are regional accents dying out as English becomes a global language? And most importantly of all: what went wrong in Birmingham? Witty, authoritative and jam-packed full of fascinating facts, You Say Potato is a celebration of the myriad ways in which the English language is spoken - and how our accents, in so many ways, speak louder than words.

Simpsons Family History
In 2014, The Simpsons will have been on the air for 25 years. It is the longest running American sitcom, the longest running animated series and the longest running primetime, scripted television series. In any list of the world's leading families, the Simpsons would stand out. The Simpson family is often described as being "dysfunctional," but it would be more accurate to say that in their quarter century of existence they have proven to be multifunctional, capable of Shakespearean wit, possessors of numerous and impressive talents and skills, paragons of emotional intelligence and vastly knowledgeable about virtually everything. The Simpsons Family History tells the story of this typical, but also completely remarkable, family--rites of passage, milestones, achievements, travels (in space and time), genealogy and more. This large-format, richly illustrated book is the ultimate family album. It is also the first Simpsons book to pay tribute to the extraordinary visual artistry that has made The Simpsons the most consistently entertaining, enlightening and inventive show in the history of television.

Room of Ones Own
A Room of One's Own is Virginia Woolf's most powerful feminist essay, justifying the need for women to possess intellectual freedom and financial independence. Based on a lecture given at Girton College, Cambridge, the essay is one of the great feminist polemics, ranging in its themes from Jane Austen and Carlotte Bronte to the silent fate of Shakespeare's gifted (imaginary) sister and the effects of poverty and sexual constraint on female creativity. Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is regarded as a major twentieth-century author and essayist, a key figure in literary history as a feminist and modernist, and the centre of 'The Bloomsbury Group'. Between 1925 and 1931 Woolf produced what are now regarded as her finest masterpieces, from Mrs Dalloway (1925) to the poetic and highly experimental novel The Waves (1931). She also maintained an astonishing output of literary criticism, short fiction, journalism and biography, including the playfully subversive Orlando (1928) and A Room of One's Own (1929). If you enjoyed A Room of One's Own, you might like Woolf's Orlando, also available in Penguin Modern Classics. "Probably the most influential piece of non-fictional writing by a woman in this century". (Hermione Lee, Financial Times).

Tiger Woods
Based on three years of extensive research and reporting, two of today's most acclaimed investigative journalists, Jeff Benedict of Sports Illustrated and eleven-time Emmy Award winner Armen Keteyian, deliver the first major biography of Tiger Woods - sweeping in scope and packed with groundbreaking, behind-the-scenes details of the Shakespearean rise and epic fall of a global icon.
In 2009, Tiger Woods was the most famous athlete on the planet, a transcendent star of almost unfathomable fame and fortune living what appeared to be the perfect life - married to a Swedish beauty and the father of two young children. Winner of fourteen major golf championships and seventy-nine PGA Tour events, Woods was the first billion-dollar athlete, earning more than $100 million a year in endorsements from the likes of Nike, Gillette, AT&T and Gatorade.
But it was all a carefully crafted illusion. As it turned out, Woods had been living a double life for years - one that exploded in the aftermath of a late-night crash that exposed his serial infidelity and sent his personal and professional life off a cliff. In Tiger Woods, Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian dig deep behind the headlines to produce a richly reported answer to the question that has mystified millions of sports fans for nearly a decade: who is Tiger Woods?
Drawing on more than four hundred interviews with people from every corner of Woods's life - friends, family members, teachers, romantic partners, swing coaches, business associates, Tour pros and members of Woods's inner circle - Benedict and Keteyian construct a captivating psychological profile of an African-American child programmed by an attention-grabbing father and the original Tiger Mom to be the 'chosen one', to change not just the game of golf, but the world as well. But at what cost?
Benedict and Keteyian provide the startling answers in a biography destined to make headlines and linger in the minds of readers for years to come.

Civil War
In Civil War, Peter Ackroyd continues his dazzling account of England's history, beginning with the progress south of the Scottish king, James VI, who on the death of Elizabeth I became the first Stuart king of England, and ends with the deposition and flight into exile of his grandson, James II. The Stuart dynasty brought together the two nations of England and Scotland into one realm, albeit a realm still marked by political divisions that echo to this day. More importantly, perhaps, the Stuart era was marked by the cruel depredations of civil war, and the killing of a king. Ackroyd paints a vivid portrait of James I and his heirs. Shrewd and opinionated, the new King was eloquent on matters as diverse as theology, witchcraft and the abuses of tobacco, but his attitude to the English parliament sowed the seeds of the division that would split the country in the reign of his hapless heir, Charles I. Ackroyd offers a brilliant - warts and all - portrayal of Charles's nemesis Oliver Cromwell, Parliament's great military leader and England's only dictator, who began his career as a political liberator but ended it as much of a despot as 'that man of blood', the king he executed. England's turbulent seventeenth century is vividly laid out before us, but so too is the cultural and social life of the period, notable for its extraordinarily rich literature, including Shakespeare's late masterpieces, Jacobean tragedy, the poetry of John Donne and Milton and Thomas Hobbes' great philosophical treatise, Leviathan. Civil War also gives us a very real sense of the lives of ordinary English men and women, lived out against a backdrop of constant disruption and uncertainty.

Film posters of the 40s
Considering that the world was at war during the first half of the decade and much of it still in ruins during the second half, the 1940s were an extraordinary fertile period for the cinema. This was the heyday of directors such as Orson Wells (Citizen Kane, The Lady from Shanghai and The Third Man), Alfred Hitchcock (Notorious, Rope, Spellbound and Suspicion), Powell and Pressberger (Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes) and Jean Cocteau (La Belle et la Bete, Orphee), and of stars like Rita Hayworth, Ingrid Bergman, Betty Grable, Laurence Olivier, Clark Gable, Robert Mitchum and, of course, the incomparable Bogart and Bacall. Most lists of all-time favourites will include a host of 40s movies such as Casablanca and Brief Encounter. Surprisingly, perhaps, the decade produced relatively few memorable war films, though Twelve O'Clock High and the March of Time documentary series are notable exceptions. Indeed the setting that most characteristic of the cinema of the 1940s is not the battlefield, but the dark alleys and mean streets of the noir genre, represented here by titles such as The Blue Dahlia, The Big Sleep, Double Indemnity, The Maltese Falcon, The Postman Always Rings Twice and Gilda. Not only are these movies enduring classics, they also inspired some of the greatest poster art in the cinema's history and, as always in this series of books, it is fascinating to see how the subjects were treated by European and other poster artists as well as the American originals. In Europe, the age of postwar austerity saw the beginnings of Ealing's classic comedies with Kind Hearts and Coronets, two of Olivier's interpretations of Shakespearean tragedy, Hamlet and Macbeth, and the revival of the French and Italian film industries with movies like Les Enfants du Paradis and Rome Open City. Add to this list a pot pourri of miscellaneous titles ranging from Abbott and Costello in Hollywood to Ziegfield Follies, and you have ten years' worth of movie posters quite as memorable and evocative as anything from previous volumes in this bestselling series.

Bitva o věčnost začíná
Starověký Egypt čeká epický souboj titánů. Magie, monstra, rozzuření bohové a šílenství ovládli paláce a pyramidy údolí řeky Nil!
Smrtelník i bůh musí projít zkouškami odvahy i obětavosti a postavit se monstrům, o kterých smrtelník do té doby pouze slýchával. Jinak nebudou mít nejmenší šanci nakonec zvítězit.
V očích fanoušků se Bohové Egypta dají shrnout třemi slovy: Lanister kontra Leonidas. Hlavní souboj totiž svedou Nikolaj Coster-Waldau a Gerard Butler.
Ve vedlejších rolích hrají Rufus Sewell (Smrtihlav, Příběh rytíře), Chadwick Boseman (Get On Up – Příběh Jamese Browna, Captain America: Občanská válka) nebo Geoffrey Rush (Zamilovaný Shakespeare, Piráti z Karibiku: Prokletí Černé perly).
