Tokyo Architecture & Design
Tokyo constitutes the most populated metropolitan area on the planet&894 it’s houses 33 million inhabitants who get around on the world’s most complex railroad system, as well as enjoying the highest number of restaurants per inhabitant in the world. It is also, possibly, the megalopolis with the highest proportion of recent architecture. Despite the fact that Tokyo’s origins date back to the 17th century _ when it was known as Edo _ and that it went trough a golden age at the end of the 19th century after being declared the capital of Japan, little remains of its original architecture as result of two significant events that almost completely destroyed it: an earthquake in 1923, which triggered plans for a rebuilding programme that proved unfeasible due to the high cost, and the bombardments of World War II, which almost halved the population. In no other city are the boundaries between inside and outside, public and private, up and down as blurred as in Tokyo&894 this lack of frontiers has shaped an urban setting without parallel, which is reflected equally by the most state-of-the-art skyscraper and the most intimate store. This amalgam of architectural typologies has established itself as a reference point for designers from all over the world.

U2 Show
Everything about the band U2 is huge. From their music, to their tours, to their influence on global popular culture and politics. In the US they are cultural icons as well as multimillion album selling pop stars. Underpinning their popularity is their passion for touring. For the last 20 years they have hardly been off the road. It is the thing they love to do most. And it is touring which drives their creativity and reflects the direction of the band. From the modest Tick Tock Tour of 1980, through the Joshua Tree, and on to the videomedia extravaganza of ZooTV in the early 90s and Popmart in the late 90s then the more intimate Elevation tour of the last two years, it is the tours which have set their agenda. For the first time the band has agreed to allow a book on this vital part of their creative energy. The photographs are hand picked from their archive put together over 25 years. There will be a commentary by Diana Scrimgeour, who has been a photographer on recent tours, and first-person accounts from the close associates of the band. U2 Show will be the music publishing event of 2004.

Puzzle Dinner with Matisse
f you could have dinner with any artist, who would it be?
Bonjour and welcome to Henri Matisse's studio at the Hotel Regina. An intimate dinner party or collage of chaos? Grab your scissors and join Pablo Picasso, Andre Derain and the Cone sisters, along with three very special brioche-eating cats, for a fauvist feast in this 1000-piece puzzle. Piece together the artists, artworks and surroundings that bring Matisse's colourful world to life.
Did you know that it was Matisse's work that inspired the fauvism movement? In the early 1900s, Matisse developed a new style of painting. He used bright masses of paint and chose the colours based on his emotions, rather than reality. One critic coined the term after calling the works 'fauves', meaning 'wild beasts'.
The Dinner Date Jigsaw Puzzle series is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of history's most famous artists.
Completed puzzle measures 48.5 x 68 cm.
I Wish Someone Were Waiting For Me Somewhere
Following the publication of Anna Gavalda's international bestseller, "Hunting and Gathering", this book introduces us to Anna Gavalda's witty and dazzling collection of stories, "I Wish Someone Were Waiting For Me Somewhere", together with her heart

Three Wishes
An unprecedented, behind-the-scenes look at jazz legends In the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, Pannonica de Koenigswarter, known as Nica, was a constant and benevolent presence on the thriving New York jazz scene. Known as the Jazz Baroness (she was born into the wealthy Rothschild family and later married a French aristocrat) she befriended such giants as Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Barry Harris, Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Bud Powell, and many more. She inspired over twenty jazz compositions, bailed musicians out of jail, and even acted as a booking agent. She also collected wishes. Over the course of a decade, Koenigswarter asked three hundred musicians what their three wishes in life were, jotting them all down in a notebook. At the same time she took hundreds of candid photographs, saving them all. In Three Wishes, Koenigswarter’s forays into the psyches and lives of these legendary jazz artists are made available in America for the first time. With a foreword by celebrated jazz critic Gary Giddins, and a introduction from Nica’s granddaughter, Nadine de Koenigswarter, providing rare insights into the mysterious baroness’s life, this funny, eclectic, and moving compilation is a uniquely intimate look into the immortals of the classic era of jazz, and a must-have for any fan or afficianado.

Valóban meggyógyítják a testüket, amikor meggyógyítják a gondolataikat. The Last American Man
At the age of seventeen, Eustace Conway ditched the comforts of his suburban existence to escape to the wild. Away from the crushing disapproval of his father, he lived alone in a teepee in the mountains. Everything he needed he built, grew or killed. He made his clothes from deer he killed and skinned before using their sinew as sewing thread. But he didn't stop there. In the years that followed, he stopped at nothing in pursuit of bigger, bolder challenges. He travelled the Mississippi in a handmade wooden canoe; he walked the two-thousand-mile Appalachian Trail; he hiked across the German Alps in trainers; he scaled cliffs in New Zealand. One Christmas, he finished dinner with his family and promptly upped and left - to ride his horse across America. >From South Carolina to the Pacific, with his little brother in tow, they dodged cars on the highways, ate road kill and slept on the hard ground. Now, more than twenty years on, Eustace is still in the mountains, residing in a thousand-acre forest where he teaches survival skills and attempts to instil in people a deeper appreciation of nature. But over time he has had to reconcile his ambitious dreams with the sobering realities of modernity. Told with Elizabeth Gilbert's trademark wit and spirit, this is a fascinating, intimate portrait of an endlessly complicated man: a visionary, a narcissist, a brilliant but flawed modern hero. The Last American Man is an unforgettable adventure story of an irrepressible life lived to the extreme. The Last American Man is a New York Times Notable Book and National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist.

Mao The unknown story
Jung Chang's Wild Swans was an extraordinary bestseller throughout the world, selling more than 10 million copies and reaching a wider readership than any other book about China. Now she and her husband Jon Halliday have written a groundbreaking biography of Mao Tse-tung. Based on a decade of research, and on interviews with many of Mao's close circle in China who have never talked before - and with virtually everyone outside China who had significant dealings with him - this is the most authoritative life of Mao ever written. It is full of startling revelations, exploding the myth of the Long March, and showing a completely unknown Mao: he was not driven by idealism or ideology, his intimate and intricate relationship with Stalin went back to the 1920s, ultimately bringing him to power, he welcomed Japanese occupation of much of China, and he schemed, poisoned and blackmailed to get his way. After Mao conquered China in 1949, his secret goal was to dominate the world. In chasing this dream he caused the deaths of 38 million people in the greatest famine in history. Combining meticulous history with the story-telling style of Wild Swans, this biography makes immediate Mao's roller-coaster life, as he intrigued and fought every step of the way to force through his unpopular decisions. The reader enters the shadowy chambers of Mao's court, and eavesdrops on the drama in its hidden recesses. Mao's character and the enormity of his behaviour towards his wives, mistresses and children are unveiled for the first time. This is an entirely fresh look at Mao in both content and approach. It will astonish historians and the general reader alike.

Sztárok és sztorik CD melléklettel
"Hihetetlen, mennyi minden történt életemben, mígnem eljutottam ennek a könyvnek a megjelenéséig. Úgy negyven éve filmezni kezdtem tizenéves hévvel. Családunk barátja, Szalóky Sándor festőművész - rövid alkotásaimat megtekintve - javasolta, hogy fényképezőgépet használjak inkább álló képek megörökítésére. Csobánkának nem maradt egyetlen száraz ága sem, amely apám Zorkij típusú gépének objektívével ne szemezett volna.
Aztán egy nagy váltással jött a sport. A mozgás, a lendület kezdett érdekelni, s vele együtt az emberek. Pályázgattam kiállításokra, esetenként nemzetköziekre is. Több lap következett, a végállomást a Pajtás jelentette.
Ezeket a kapcsolatokat később televíziós műsorok gyártásánál kamatoztattam.
Ma is "verem a fejem a falba" a megismételhetetlen, csodás pillanatok elszalasztásáért.

Personalities on the Plate - The Lives and Minds of Animals We Eat
In recent years, scientific advances in our understanding of animal minds have led to major changes in how we think about, and treat, animals in zoos and aquariums. The general public, it seems, is slowly coming to understand that animals like apes, elephants, and dolphins have not just brains, but complicated inner and social lives, and that we need to act accordingly. Yet that realization hasn't yet made its presence felt to any great degree in our most intimate relationship with animals: at the dinner table. Sure, there are vegetarians and vegans all over, but at the same time, meat consumption is up, and meat remains a central part of the culinary and dining experience for the majority of people in the developed world. With Personalities on the Plate, Barbara King asks us to think hard about our meat eating though this isn't a polemic intended to convert readers to veganism. What she is interested in is why we've not drawn food animals into our concern, and, as part of that, just what we do know about the minds and lives of chickens, cows, octopuses, fish, and more.Rooted in the latest science, and built on a mix of firsthand experience (including entomophagy, which, yes, is what you think it is) and close engagement with the work of scientists, farmers, vets, and chefs, Personalities on the Plate is an unforgettable journey through the world of animals we eat. Knowing what we know and what we may yet learn what is the proper ethical stance toward eating meat? What are the consequences for the planet? How can we life an ethically and ecologically sound life through our food choices? We could have no better guide to these fascinatingly thorny questions than King, whose deep empathy embraces human and animal alike. Readers will be moved, provoked, and changed by this powerful book.

U2 By U2
I always thought the job was to be as great as you could be. -- Bono. This is the story of U2, in their own words and pictures. It is the only authorised, fully comprehensive guide to the biggest band in the world. Told with wit, insight and astonishing candour by the band themselves and manager Paul McGuinness, with pictures from their own archives, 'U2 By U2' allows unprecedented access into the inner life of the greatest rock band of our times. Bad haircuts, worse hangovers, prayer meetings and wild parties, encounters with presidents and popes, intimate accounts of the creation of all their classic songs, it is all here in a beautifully-presented book overseen by the band with the same passion for substance, style and immaculate attention to details familiar from their musical career. "We wore it as a stubborn badge of pride that we weren't prepared to fall into line with every other group and take the fashionable stance of the day. We were uncool because we were hot, we just erupted as a live band." -- The Edge In 1975, four teenagers from Mount Temple School in Dublin gathered in a crowded kitchen to discuss forming a band. The drum kit just about fit into the room, the lead guitarist was playing a homemade guitar, the bassist could barely play at all and nobody wanted to be the singer. Over thirty years later, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jnr are still together, bound by intense loyalty, passionate idealism and a relentless belief in the power of rock and roll to change the world. "We are trying to pin down something elusive, something that represents where we are, emotionally, physically, spiritually, but is also fresh and exciting. If it is not absolutely the best it can be, then why bother?" -- Adam Clayton "I have read a lot of rubbish about U2. Whenever I see us described in some mythic sense as masters of our own destiny, it makes me laugh. Being in U2 is more like riding a runaway train. We are just ordinary guys, hanging on to this thing for our lives." -- Larry Mullen Jnr

1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows
Through the sweeping, extraordinary story of his own and his father's lives, Ai Weiwei - one of the world's most famous artists and activists - tells an epic tale of China over the last 100 years.
Ai Weiwei's sculptures and installations have been viewed by millions around the globe, and his architectural achievements include helping to design Beijing's iconic Bird's Nest Olympic Stadium. But his political activism has long made him a target of the Chinese authorities, which culminated in months of secret detention without charge in 2011. Here, for the first time, Ai Weiwei explores the origins of his exceptional creativity and passionate political beliefs through his own life story and that of his father, whose own creativity was stifled.
Once an intimate of Mao Zedong, Ai Weiwei's father was branded a rightist during the Cultural Revolution, and he and his family were banished to a desolate place known as 'Little Siberia', where Ai Qing was sentenced to hard labour cleaning public toilets. Ai Weiwei recounts his childhood in exile, and his difficult decision to leave his family to study art in America. With candour and wit, he details his return to China and his rise from artistic unknown to art world superstar and international human rights activist - and how his work has been shaped by living under a totalitarian regime.
At once ambitious and intimate, 1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows offers a deep understanding of the forces that have shaped modern China, and serves as a timely reminder of the urgent need to protect freedom of expression.
The Rising Tide: A Novel Of World War II
A modern master of the historical novel, Jeff Shaara has painted brilliant depictions of the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, and World War I. Now he embarks upon his most ambitious epic, a trilogy about the military conflict that defined the twentieth century. The Rising Tide begins a staggering work of fiction bound to be a new generation’s most poignant chronicle of World War II. With you-are-there immediacy, painstaking historical detail, and all-inclusive points of view, Shaara portrays the momentous and increasingly dramatic events that pulled America into the vortex of this monumental conflict. As Hitler conquers Poland, Norway, France, and most of Western Europe, England struggles to hold the line. When Germany’s ally Japan launches a stunning attack on Pearl Harbor, America is drawn into the war, fighting to hold back the Japanese conquest of the Pacific, while standing side-by-side with their British ally, the last hope for turning the tide of the war.Through unforgettable battle scenes in the unforgiving deserts of North Africa and the rugged countryside of Sicily, Shaara tells this story through the voices of this conflict’s most heroic figures, some familiar, some unknown. As British and American forces strike into the “soft underbelly” of Hitler’s Fortress Europa, the new weapons of war come clearly into focus. In North Africa, tank battles unfold in a tapestry of dust and fire unlike any the world has ever seen. In Sicily, the Allies attack their enemy with a barely tested weapon: the paratrooper. As battles rage along the coasts of the Mediterranean, the momentum of the war begins to shift, setting the stage for the massive invasion of France, at a seaside resort called Normandy.More than an unprecedented and intimate portrait of those who waged this astonishing global war, The Rising Tide is a vivid gallery of characters both immortal and unknown: the as-yet obscure administrator Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose tireless efficiency helped win the war, his subordinates, clashing in both style and personality, from George Patton and Mark Clark to Omar Bradley and Bernard Montgomery. In the desolate hills and deserts, the Allies confront Erwin Rommel, the battlefield genius known as “the Desert Fox,” a wounded beast who hands the Americans their first humiliating defeat in the European theater of the war. From tank driver to paratrooper to the men who gave the commands, Shaara’s stirring portrayals bring the heroic and the tragic to life in brilliant detail. A new level of accomplishment from this already acclaimed author, The Rising Tide will leave readers eager for the next volume of this superb saga of the war that saved and changed the world. From the Hardcover edition.
