Ez a kötet annak a több mint tíz éves kutató munkának eredménye, mely magába foglalta manchester-i valamint a londoni British Library-ban tett tanulmányutat is annak érdekében, hogy Magyarországon is szülessen egy összehasonlító könyv Shakespeare és az abszurd dráma kapcsolatáról. Ez a dolgozat a doktori fokozat megszerzéséért készült, ugyanakkor, mivel origójában Jan Kott, Kortársunk Shakespeare című könyve áll, nem kisebb célt állított szerzője elé, mint annak felkutatását miként lehet újraértelmezni a négy nagytragédiát, annak abszurd szegmenseivel oly mód, hogy nem csapunk át a kotti abszurdba, de nem is illeszkedünk bele abba a cenzúrába, mely szerint Shakespeare tudományosan nem hozható összefüggésbe az abszurddal. Remélem, hogy a drámák számos részlete az általam fordított szövegben világosabb, érthetőbb, mint a régebbieknél. Érthetőbb lesz, hogy egy jelenetben a szereplők között milyen lélektani viszony áll fenn, gúnyos vagy fennhéjázó, biztató vagy reménykedő, leereszkedő vagy megalázó hangot ütnek-e meg. Ezeket az árnyalatokat egy száz-százötven éves (vagy akár ötvenéves, de szándékosan régiesre hangolt) fordításból már kevéssé tudjuk kihallani, a régi szöveg ,,kikontrasztosítja" a lélektani viszonyokat, azaz a sokféle színárnyalatból csak a fehéret vagy feketét, a jót vagy rosszat érezzük ki - bár tény, hogy azt elemi erővel.
