The Age of Shakespeare
'The greatest literary scholar of his generation' (Independent) explains how the history of the Elizabethan era is the backdrop to William Shakespeare and his plays.
Shakespeare made his unique contribution to British and world culture in the midst of Elizabeth's great reign.
Here, the circumstances of each play's composition are acutely described, and set within a masterful portrait of Shakespeare's England - its early capitalism, its court, its bursting population, and its epidemics, as well as its arts - including, of course, its theatre.
An important, lasting, and concise companion to Shakespeare's time.

The Shakespeare Ladies Club
Following Shakespeare’s death in 1616, four women were crucial in ensuring the original work of the Bard was not forgotten. This was the Shakespeare Ladies Club. Formed in 1736, the club was a quartet of ‘Women of Quality’; three from the aristocracy and one a writer who ran a stationery shop, all educated and so enraptured by the plays of William Shakespeare that they met to read and discuss his transcendent genius. Not content with this, they used their power and influence to campaign successfully for a statue of their literary idol to be placed in Westminster Abbey – shamefully, to this day their efforts remain overlooked, as credit for the statue is still given to a group of men. These women put their considerable wealth behind their lobbying for more Shakespeare plays; they convinced theatre managers to put on the original versions by promising to underwrite any financial losses. They had to overcome a post-Puritan culture that believed theatre to be immoral and no place for respectable women. After nearly 300 years, this book finally tells their remarkable story. In the authors’ words: ‘The obstacles they faced were daunting, yet Susanna Shaftesbury, Elizabeth Boyd and the two Marys, Montagu and Cowper, each like the goddess Diana the archer, fired an aesthetic arrow that would strike a bullseye in Britain and, eventually, the entire world, as reviving Shakespeare has positively affected human culture to this day.’

Maybe Shakespeare, Maybe Harlequin
A whole universe (contained inside a Beardmore taxi) parks itself in Elizabethan London. Inside, a troupe of actors begin to stage plays written by a certain Master (who bears an uncanny resemblance to William Shakespeare). Pretty soon, there are queues outside the newly-built Globe theatre. Queen Elizabeth is a fan. . . the other theatre companies in town aren''t. Tensions build, fights break out and the future of the new theatre is under threat from several directions. Meanwhile, Lorenzo (who might be the creator of the universe inside the Beardmore taxi) is distracted. You see, he’s fallen in love.Part literary alternative history, part absurdist burlesque, part subtle deconstruction of time, place and authorship, Maybe Shakespeare, Maybe Harlequin is a universe-bending carnivalesque, a layered and mesmerising fabulation, a book like no other.

Shakespeare in South Florida
In this coming-of-age romantic comedy, a 17-year-old virgin film nerd, Joseph Caldo, who sees himself as a real-life art film, experiences first love, first sex, and first heartbreak in the surreal setting of South Florida while trying to make sense of Shakespeare’s stupid plays. Caldo has no real social life, unless arguing about film online counts. Having seen so many films while struggling romantically, he has formed a theory that women pick romantic partners the way they pick which movie to watch. He’s definitely not a blockbuster, a rom com, or even a horror film, he’s more of an indie art film that is unfortunately funny. He worries he’ll never find the person who will accept and love him, the way that he accepts and loves his favorite obscure films. That is until he meets Alexia at his grandmother's retirement home. Alexia was court-ordered to do volunteer work for her DUI but it's cool, Caldo has issues too, and it feels like they have a real connection. But there's also Valerie. The new girl at Caldo's awkwardly small school. She's a straight-A student who is attending on scholarship and is assigned the difficult task to mentor him in Shakespeare's plays. The two opposites have nothing in common except for being romantics who do nothing but fail at romance. With first jobs that go very wrong, untimely food poisoning, and fake prom dates, Caldo unintentionally reenacts Shakespearian tropes in the heart of South Florida. Humor award-winning author, Christoph Paul, and Caroline Macon Fleischer's Shakespeare in South Florida is a quirky romantic comedy about being 17 and falling in love.

Shakespeare a teorie interpretace
