Děj knihy se odehrává v šedesátých letech devatenáctého století, kdy byla „země kožešin“, tj. Kanada, sídlem několika vzájemně soupeřících loveckých společností. Ty se snažily posouvat své revíry stále více na sever, kde ještě bylo hodně vzácné zvěře.
