Poviedky tatranského spisovateľa, vysokohorského nosiča, záchranára a chatára Bela Kapolku (1935 – 1994) patria do zlatého fondu slovenskej literatúry. Za debut Kanadské smreky (1967) získal prestížnu Cenu Ivana Kraska, za zbierku poviedok Strecha (1968) Cenu Vydavateľstva Smena a čitateľsky obľúbené boli aj Chodníky bez značiek, v ktorých sa poviedkové príbehy prelínajú s publicistickým hodnotením diania v podtatranských osadách. Z nich vedú značkované chodníky k vysokohorských chatám, odkiaľ sa vydávajú turisti a horolezci na lákavé, náročné i nebezpečné trasy sedlami a žulovými stenami k vrcholom najmenších európskych veľhôr. Kapolkove knižky nezoženiete už ani v antikvariáte, a tak sa Vydavateľstvo Spolku spisovateľov rozhodlo vyslať ich k súčasným čitateľom spoločne pod názvom Pod tatranskými strechami. Spisovateľ sa po príchode do Vysokých Tatier neuspokojoval s pozíciou nadšeného obdivovateľa prírodných scenérií. Bol aktívnym účastníkom diania, preto sú jeho príbehy naplnené osobnými skúsenosťami. Zbieral ich pri mnohých aktívnych činnostiach. Robil pomocníka pri tesárskych prácach, v záhrade polieval záhony a pestoval kvietky, bol plavčíkom na kúpalisku v Ružbachoch, údržbárom na strojnej a traktorovej stanici, kuričom v hoteloch, natieral stožiare diaľkového elektrického vedenia, pracoval v lese, pri lyžiarskom vleku. Písal o cezhraničnom pašovaní tovaru, ktoré spoznal aj vlastnou skúsenosťou. Vážil si nosičov ťažkých nákladov na horské chaty. Cenil si nefalšované kamarátstva, otvorené medziľudské vzťahy. Konal s úctou k prostrediu Vysokých Tatier, s ktorým bol bytostne zrastený, čo dokazoval aj v svojej literárnej tvorbe.
