V rukou držíte nejen autorský životopis dokumentaristy, publicisty a spisovatele Martina Mahdala, ale také jedinečné svědectví o tom, jak v České republice vznikají (či spíše často nevznikají) dokumentární filmy. Autor v knize vzpomíná na své autorské začátky, na spolupráci s Českou televizí i na období, kdy hledal své uplatnění na volné noze. Přitom zde připomíná řadu zajímavých osobností, s nimiž měl možnost se setkat, a zároveň přibližuje i některé nepříjemné záležitosti, na které při své tvorbě narazil. Výjimkou mezi nimi nebyly ani korupce a zejména cenzura nebo čistá nechuť oficiálních míst respektovat některé události a problémy na veřejnosti.
Dokumentarista je další ze série knih Martina Mahdala v Olympii, která se opírá o jeho zkušenosti dokumentaristy. Volně tak navazuje na dokumentární publikaci Zákon pěti klasů (Olympia, 2022) a především na knihu Devadesátky (Olympia, 2023), ve které autor přiblížil své tvrdě zaplacené zkušenosti z porevolučního podnikání coby jedna z obětí Berdychova gangu.
