What Would Maggie Do?
Michael’s charismatic and highly successful wife Maggie showed the first signs of dementia in her mid-fifties. His experience of caring for her is quite exceptional: he lived with her in a care home for nine years, overseeing every aspect of her care and medical treatment. Předností knižního pojednání životaběhu náchodské rodačky Slávy Vorlové (1894–1973), jedné z mála mezinárodně úspěšných českých žen-skladatelek, v kompozici žačky Vítězslava Nováka a Jaroslava Řídkého, je úplnost a pečlivost, s níž hudební publicistka Anna Šerých zachycuje umělkynin tvůrčí vývoj i mimořádně pohnutý lidský osud. V květnu 1945 se Sláva stala svědkem popravy svého muže Rudolfa jednotkou SS. Po nástupu komunistů k moci čelila potupnému ožebračení a režimní šikaně, a zatímco platila statisícové daně z poctivě nabytého předválečného majetku (na nějž se pravidelně sápali stalinističtí mocipáni), pokorně žádala o stokorunové tvůrčí odměny ideologií promořené svazové orgány.
Autorka měla k dispozici puntičkářsky podrobné skladatelčiny deníky, což knize dodává pel autenticity téměř dokumentární. Milovníkům hudby poskytuje historicko-estetický vhled textu cosi jako „aplikované dějiny české kultury a společnosti 20. století". Dozvědí se, že pilná Sláva Vorlová a její muž rychle zbohatli, provozovavše čtvero malých obchodů s klobouky a výrobnu, a že se z jejich opulentní a stylově brilantní barrandovské vily stalo počátkem 30. let na celých patnáct sezon vyhledávané centrum domácího provozování soudobé hudby za účasti nejlesklejších tvůrčích osobností své doby. S nástupem „lidově demokratického" režimu umělkyně dlouho živořila v nedobrém psychickém stavu, avšak v poslední dekádě života se chytře uchýlila k technikám tzv. nové hudby (dodekafonie, aleatorika), čímž vyrazila z rukou zbraně bezradným (a vůči novým směrům vývoje ve svobodném světě zamindrákovaným) režimním dohlížitelům.
Strhující kniha přesahuje řemeslný rámec pouhého sledu skladatelského vývoje; noří se hluboko za kulisy společnosti, kultury a hudebního provozu tří režimů a je cennou sondou do socialistických svazových manýr (na základě konkrétních situací a doslovných citací dokumentů!) a obžalobou truchlivé éry povinného masového juchání na pozadí širokého spektra soukromých strachů a všudypřítomné autocenzury.
Dnešní čtenář může se znalostí skladatelčiny převážně neveselé biografie dospět k malému dobrému evangeliu: v těžkých dobách se s výhodou uchylujme ke skromným — třeba i hudebním — radostem, jež se (na rozdíl od politických garnitur) nemění, a nacházejme v nich jak pomocníka při nikdy nekončícím hledání smyslu života, tak tolik potřebou psychickou rezistenci.
Čítanie o slávnych osobnostiach je mnohokrát inšpirujúce. Motivujú nás biografie slávnych umelcov, známych hercov alebo významných politikov.
Absolútne prvou biografiou všetkých čias je zrejme Excellentium Imperatorum Vitae, ktorú napísal grék Cornelius Nepos a opisoval v nej životy viacerých gréckych vojenských generálov. Neskôr mal už skoro každý významný vodca svoju biografiu, vrátane Cicera, Júliusa Cézara alebo Alexandra veľkého.
Pri čítaní životopisných kníh máme jedinečnú možnosť sledovať dlhú cestu, ktorú museli títo slávni ľudia prejsť. Uvidíme množstvo pádov a chýb, kvôli ktorým sa ale tieto osoby nevzdali a zobrali ich ako príležitosť zlepšiť sa vo všetkyćh oblastiach. Mnoho v sebe skrývajú aj úprimné rozhovory, ktoré sú často otvorenými vyznaniami a v tejto kategórii nájdete isto aj knihu o človeku, ktorého považujete za svoj vzor a je pre vás inšpiráciou.
