What Would Maggie Do?

Michael’s charismatic and highly successful wife Maggie showed the first signs of dementia in her mid-fifties. His experience of caring for her is quite exceptional: he lived with her in a care home for nine years, overseeing every aspect of her care and medical treatment. Michael chose to do this as an act of love, not wanting to be separated from his wife nor to leave her alone. But the result was that a highly experienced business consultant lived inside the care system for nine years, observing, guiding and negotiating care and medical treatment on Maggie’s behalf, and is now able to share that story. In the experience of care professionals, this is unique. The lessons he learnt are so important that he has been urged by senior figures in the care sector to share his experience for the benefit of others and to promote much needed changes in the current care system.

City Lights

On a San Francisco street corner in 1953, aspiring painter and poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti shook hands with sociology instructor and magazine editor Peter Martin. Their handshake sealed Ferlinghetti’s five-hundred-dollar investment in a small retail space above a North Beach flower shop that would become City Lights Bookstore and Press. Since the mid-twentieth century, the bookstore and its press have continued to shape the way literature is produced and consumed. As the first-ever all-paperback bookstore in the nation, sponsor of the Beat Movement and the San Francisco Renaissance, home of the Pocket Poets series, torchbearer for free speech movements, and promoter of global comparative literature and human rights, City Lights has continuously been at the avant-garde of literary experimentation and cultural revolution. City Lights: Lawrence Ferlinghetti and the Biography of a Bookstore is the seminal story of the bookstore, its press, and the inimitable Ferlinghetti.

Liberal Worlds

The intellectual biography of a Victorian Liberal polymathJames Bryce (1838–1922) was a leading figure in Britain’s Liberal Party and a distinguished historian, a versatile scholar-politician who moved seamlessly between academia and politics. He was, among many other things, a cabinet minister and a popular ambassador, an expert on American politics and on Roman law, an advocate for the Armenian people and an architect of the League of Nations, a world traveller and a climber of Mount Ararat. In Liberal Worlds, Stuart Jones offers an intellectual biography of Bryce, tracing a Scots-Ulster Presbyterian’s assimilation to the increasingly multiconfessional Victorian state, and a late Victorian Liberal’s encounter with the wider world. Jones shows how a polymathic intelligence grappled with a dizzyingly wide range of concerns and issues, including the challenges of democracy and race relations, the rise of modern universities and the reconstruction of the international order after World War I. In mapping the evolution of Bryce’s thought, Liberal Worlds illuminates the international intellectual networks and the many places across the globe that shaped his thinking. Jones considers, for example, why a man who had a lifelong revulsion against slavery seemed to accept racial segregation in the American South; how a vigorous activist for girls’ and women’s education became a tenacious parliamentary critic of women’s suffrage; and why, over the objections of his Ulster Presbyterian family, he backed Irish home rule. Above all, Jones rescues Bryce—immensely influential in his time, now little remembered—from being consigned to a historical pigeonhole, restoring him to the centre of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century debates over the nature of democratic politics.

The Man Who Gave Me A Biscuit

A coming-of-age memoir of love, rebellion, and political awakening, set amid Argentina’s buried history of Indigenous genocide, military coups, and disappearing women. When setting out to write a memoir about growing up in in the little-known British Community of Buenos Aires, Penny Woolcock anticipated recounting her escape from a sheltered childhood where girls like her were trained for marriage and polite society. But she soon discovered that behind a genteel façade of afternoon tea and games of hockey lay a much darker story, one of mass killings and amnesia. The Man Who Gave Me a Biscuit braids together memories of a tumultuous adolescence, which saw Woolcock join a radical theatre group and fall in love with the most unsuitable man she could find, and reflections on the legacy of violence and authoritarianism that to this day permeates her country of birth. In these pages we learn of the “Conquest of the Desert”, a genocide that took place fifteen years after her great grandparents’ arrival from Europe; a succession of military coups, including the murderous Junta of the 1970’s; the surreal idiosyncrasies of Peronism; and the madness of today’s President Javier Milei, whose key advisor is his dead mastiff, Conan. In turns funny, painful, entertaining and downright terrifying, this story in chiaroscuro superbly contrasts the excitement of a teenager’s world opening up, and the brutality of a society shut down by repression and fear.

Enchanted by Daphne

The extraordinary life story of the celebrated naturalist who transformed our understanding of evolutionEnchanted by Daphne is legendary ecologist Peter Grant’s personal account of his remarkable life and career. In this revelatory book, Grant takes readers from his childhood in World War II–era Britain to his ongoing research today in the Galápagos archipelago, vividly describing what it''s like to do fieldwork in one of the most magnificent yet inhospitable places on Earth. This is also the story of two brilliant and courageous biologists raising a family together while balancing the demands of professional lives that would take them to the far corners of the globe. In 1973, Grant and his wife, Rosemary, embarked on a journey that would fundamentally change how we think about evolution. Over the next four decades, they visited the Galápagos every year to observe Darwin’s famous finches on the remote, uninhabited island of Daphne Major. Documenting how eighteen species have diversified from a single ancestral species, they demonstrated that we could actually see and measure evolution in a natural setting. Grant recounts the blind alleys and breathtaking triumphs of this historic research as he and Rosemary followed in Darwin’s footsteps—and ushered in a new era in ecology.A wonderfully absorbing portrait of a life in science, Enchanted by Daphne is an unforgettable chronicle of the travels and discoveries of one of the world’s most influential naturalists.

Brooke Shields is Not Allowed to Get Old

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERFrom generational icon Brooke Shields comes an intimate and empowering exploration of ageing that flips the script on the idea of what it means for a woman to grow older Brooke Shields has spent a lifetime in the public eye. Growing up as a child actor and model, her every feature was scrutinised, her every decision judged. Today Brooke faces a different kind of scrutiny: that of being a 'woman of a certain age'. And yet, for Brooke, the passage of time has brought freedom. At fifty-nine, she feels more comfortable in her skin, more empowered and confident than she did decades ago in those famous Calvin Kleins. Now, in Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old, she's changing the narrative about women and ageing. This is an era, insists Brooke, when women are reclaiming agency and power, not receding into the shadows. These are the years when we get to decide how we want to live - when we get to write our own stories. With remarkable candour, Brooke bares all, painting a vibrant and optimistic picture of being a woman in the prime of her life, while dismantling the myths that have, for too long, dimmed that perception. Sharing her own life experiences with humour and humility, and weaving together research and reporting, Brooke takes aim at the systemic factors that contribute to age-related bias. By turns inspiring, moving, and galvanising, Brooke's honesty and vulnerability will resonate with women everywhere, and spark a new conversation about the power and promise of midlife.

Sick Animals

Weare all just creatures trying to survive the consequences of beingmisunderstood. In‘SICK ANIMALS’ a much-maligned man tells his story with stark honesty andaching poignancy. One night, at precisely one o’clock in the morning, hecommits an act so small, so seemingly harmless, that it should have passedunnoticed. Instead, it sparks a devastating chain reaction: the blunt force ofthe law, the collapse of a marriage, the splintering of a family, and the slow, merciless unravelling of a life. Moving, darkly humorous, and quietly enraging, this memoir explores the anatomy ofmodern-day unfairness, the way weakness corrodes truth, how judgement replacescompassion, and how easily one human being can become a scapegoat. Inspiredby the raw and relentless notion of injustice, ‘SICK ANIMALS’ is a hauntingmeditation on blame, morality, endurance, and the fragile line betweeninnocence and guilt.

Yes I Can

Originally published in 1965, and now being reissued in time for Sammy Davis Jr.’s hundredth birthday, Yes I Can is the groundbreaking and unforgettable legend’s equally groundbreaking and unforgettable memoir, an absolute classic of its genre that retains its power and energy to this day. The famously frank entertainer (aka “Mr. Show Business” or, in his own words, “the only Black, Puerto Rican, one-eyed Jewish entertainer in the world”) reveals the truth about working, creating art, and surviving as a Black performer in twentieth-century America. In its time, Yes I Can was a rare and candid - and hugely bestselling - exploration of the living contradictions and tensions Davis confronted throughout his storied career. It remains so today. From his beginnings as a vaudevillian and a nightclub act in segregated bars and theaters; to sharing the first interracial kisses on Broadway and on network TV; to running with Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra in the Rat Pack, and his friendships with Elvis, JFK, Martin Luther King, and more; Davis’s star power dazzled the world for decades. But out of the spotlight, he confronted racism and the unrelenting pressure to perform his identity inoffensively or face the consequences society imposed. His memoir was the first to immerse readers in the knotted intersection of Blackness and fame, recounted with unflinching honesty and a bold pursuit of authenticity. Now, with a new introduction from Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson that reframes Davis for a new century, Yes I Can is a master class, a raw and revealing record of a man who rebuked expectations, and the legacy born of his unique talents - and of the resilience that made him a star.

David Bowie and the Search for Life, Death and God

The story of how David Bowie's search for meaning inspired him to write the music that defined a generation. In this wide-ranging biography, Peter Ormerod explores the quest for spirituality that powered David Bowie's creativity from his earliest recordings to his death-defying final album. Bowie's genre-expanding, era-crossing genius had an extraordinary impact on popular culture but his life-long search for spiritual truth and enlightenment has been overlooked. From Bowie's first musical encounters as a choirboy, this book traces his spiritual obsessions over the years. As a young musician at the start of his career, he was enraptured by Tibetan Buddhism. It was the first step in a spiritual journey that would generate his most profound lyrics and music. From the Kabbalah-influenced tracks of Station to Station to Ziggy Stardust's messiah complex and the profound affinity between Heroes and Christian thought, Ormerod sheds new light on the spiritual traditions behind Bowie's genius. Taking Bowie's spiritual explorations and faith seriously, Ormerod shows us how this quest for meaning propelled him through his darkest moments and biggest successes, lending his music a timelessness and depth that has spoken to so many people across the world. Whether experiencing a dark night of the soul in LA during his occult phase or reciting the Lord's prayer in front of thousands of concertgoers, Bowie was always searching for that universal truth that lies beyond everyday reality.

All My Worldly Joy

An intimate and compelling memoir of how a traumatic journey into motherhood led one woman to revisit the myriad mental-health assessments she had received growing up, until she discovered that she’d been autistic all along. Laura Richmond had no idea that childbirth could result in post-traumatic stress until she experienced it for herself. After a harrowing labour, she was admitted to a psychiatric mother and baby unit together with her six-week-old son. Having been funnelled into mental health services almost twenty years earlier, Laura had tried every medication going and everyone had different views on what her problem was. She’d found that sometimes no one – however qualified they are or however deeply they care – really knows what to say or how to help. She was increasingly desperate, until the birth of her son sparked a sequence of events that would change everything. Laura retraces her steps through all of this. In doing so, she reflects on the tensions and absurdities within modern mental health care, the ways in which trauma shapes us and directs us, and how we can learn to trust ourselves as parents and as people. All My Worldly Joy is a story of self-discovery and profound love. It is a story of how one woman's life has been transformed, and of the thousand tiny joys her son brings every day.

Sláva Vorlová

Předností knižního pojednání životaběhu náchodské rodačky Slávy Vorlové (1894–1973), jedné z mála mezinárodně úspěšných českých žen-skladatelek, v kompozici žačky Vítězslava Nováka a Jaroslava Řídkého, je úplnost a pečlivost, s níž hudební publicistka Anna Šerých zachycuje umělkynin tvůrčí vývoj i mimořádně pohnutý lidský osud.
