Po stovkách príbehov svojich hrdinov, reálnych postáv ľudí, ktorí vstúpili do slovenského i európskeho historického povedia a zanechali v ňom pozitívnu, ale mnohí aj negatívnu stopu a viacerí z nich vstúpili i do jeho vlastného života, sa Ján Čomaj rozhodol rozpovedať svoj vlastný životný príbeh. V ňom dominujú tri základné skutočnosti, ktoré ho utvárali ako človeka a vytvorili aj jeho hodnotový systém: posuny historických hraníc na slovensko-maďarskom pohraničí po roku 1938 a 1945, pľúcne problémy, ktoré ho sprevádzali celý život a pripravili o život jeho matku a šesťdesiate roky uplynulého storočia – povestné slovenské predjarie, ktoré umožnilo aj zrod modernej slovenskej reportáže a vznik Čomajových vrcholných reportérských diel. Nasledujúcich dvadsať rokov prežival ako vydedenec len s občasnými stretnutiami s rovnako postihnutými ľuďmi, akým bol Dominik Tatarka. Po novembri 1989 zaznamenáva jeho pôsobenie po boku predsedu vlády národného porozumenia M. Čiča, reportérske roky v denníku Národná obroda, písanie kníh spomienok na priateľov zo Smeny a úrodné, veľmi plodné roky pri písaní nových kníh, až po nový domov v Šaštíne. Odišiel v januári 2020, ale stihol zanechať svedectvo, ktoré svojou výpovednou hodnotou prekračuje aj horizont jeho storočia.
O autorovi
Ján Čomaj (1935 - 2020), absolvent štúdia novinárstva na Filozofickej fakulte Univerzity Komenského v Bratislave, patril v šesťdesiatych rokoch uplynulého storočia k uznávaným reportérom mládežníckeho denníka Smena. Jeho knižný debut Počmáraný život bol učebnicou umeleckej reportáže. Ani reportérske umenie nezachránilo Čomaja pred nastupujúcimi normalizátormi: musel odísť zo Smeny aj z literatúry. K novinárskej práci sa vrátil až po novembri 1989. V knihe Veľký biliardový stôl predstavil výber zo svojej reportérskej tvorby zo 60. rokov a naplno sa začal venovať žánru literatúry faktu. Vytvoril viac ako dve desiatky príťažlivých knižných portrétov známych historických, umeleckých a popredných hereckých osobností. Temným stránkam našej histórie sa venoval v knihách Súboje s prekliatím či Zločin po slovensky. Tvoril do posledných dní a knihu pamätí Hovorí očitý svedok dokončil krátko pred smrťou.
